Many iconic sci-fi and fantasy shows and movies were released a long time ago and are still considered some of the most iconic works of cinema. Unfortunately, we don’t see many great creations on the small screens as often anymore.

Nevertheless, there are some great recent shows that can make you fall in love with these genres again. From Swamp Thing to The Witcher, here are the 10 Recent Sci-Fi And Fantasy Shows That Are Worth Your Time.

10 Swamp Thing (2019)

Swamp Thing is the only show on this list that was canceled even before it was completely released for the public to watch and evaluate it. What’s interesting is that it got extremely high ratings both from critics and from regular viewers thanks to its horror element perfectly integrated into the story.

The show focuses on the DC comic book character called Swamp Thing, a plant-based entity that was created with the help of Alec Holland’s memories. A medical doctor Abby Arcane is investigating the case of an epidemic in her hometown nearby the swamp where Swamp Thing was born.

9 Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-present)

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is another show with horror elements, but the fact that its target audience consists of teenagers makes the horror aspect more of an atmospheric detail of the story itself. Fans of Riverdale and other similar teenage shows will probably enjoy it.

The show is based on the same Archie comics as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but the two are entirely different from each other. The story here revolves around a teenage girl named Sabrina Spellman who is half-witch and half-mortal and has to manage her life between two completely different worlds.

8 The Umbrella Academy (2019-present)

The Umbrella Academy is quite similar to Sabrina: based on comics, the target audience consists of teenagers, and the characters have certain superhuman powers. Nevertheless, The Umbrella Academy is primarily a superhero show, so the story and characters are developed accordingly.

At the center of the story is a dysfunctional family made up of adopted superhero siblings. After many years, they reunite to solve the mystery of their father’s death and try to prevent the apocalypse from happening. Though it’s definitely not perfect, many aspects of the show were particularly praised including the visuals.

7 His Dark Materials (2019-present)

His Dark Materials is a fantasy drama series based on a book trilogy of the same name by Philip Pullman. The first novel of the series was previously adapted into a movie which was decent though it did get mixed reviews with fans’ opinions being divided.

The story is set in a multi-world reality with a girl named Lyra Belacqua (played by Dafne Keen) who is at the center of the unfolding events. In the world where Lyra lives, people have animal companions called daemons that are somewhat like the souls of humans. Lyra discovers dangerous secrets and has to solve mysteries to save herself and her only family – Lord Asriel (played by James McAvoy).

6 The Mandalorian (2019-present)

With Baby Yoda becoming an Internet sensation, there is no way you haven’t heard about The Mandalorian one way or another. Set in the Star Wars universe, it is the first live-action show in the franchise that could potentially give us more Star Wars series in the future.

The story follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter called Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) and his adventures beyond the New Republic. The show is set five years after Return of the Jedi and twenty-five years before The Force Awakens with an atmosphere of a space Western.

5 Love, Death & Robots (2019-present)

Love, Death & Robots is a unique adult animated sci-fi anthology series conceived by David Fincher and Tim Miller as a reboot of the 1981 animated sci-fi film Heavy Metal. What’s interesting is that each of the eighteen episodes tells a separate story with different casts and crews.

Each episode is connected to the three main themes in some way: love, death, or robots. Though obviously, some episodes are better than others, the series has been compared to Black Mirror for its connection to technology and exploration of various themes connected to it.

4 The Witcher (2019-present)

Based on a fantasy book series of the same name by a Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is one of the most recent hits that you probably memes about circulating around the same time as memes about The Mandalorian. Though The Witcher doesn’t have an equivalent of Baby Yoda, it has an extremely charismatic lead played by Henry Cavill.

Set in a medieval-like world named the Continent, the story follows three different protagonists – Geralt of Rivia, Ciri, and Yennefer – as their plotlines slowly come together. The events jump back and forward in time which may be a bit confusing, but everything is understandable once the final episode comes.

3 The Boys (2019-present)

Though many viewers are probably already tired of the superhero genre, The Boys has become a favorite for many thanks to its unique approach, interesting story, and unconventionally dark-natured characters. The series is based on the comics of the same name from the writer of Preacher comics that were adapted into an equally dark and satirical series.

The Boys is set in a world where superheroes are owned by a corporation and monetized for their abilities. Outside of their “jobs”, they are arrogant and egoistic people. Opposing them is a group of vigilantes named the Boys who are trying to keep superheroes at bay and get justice on everything bad the “heroes” have done.

2 Altered Carbon (2018-present)

Based on the novel of the same name, Altered Carbon is a cyberpunk series which is quite similar in tone to the Blade Runner duology, so fans of the movies will definitely enjoy the show. Altered Carbon combines great performances with a detailed sci-fi world, great visuals, and exciting action sequences.

The events take place in a world where consciousness can be transferred between bodies with the help of technology. The main character Takeshi Kovacs is a former soldier turned investigator whose consciousness is placed in a new body and who must now solve a murder case.

1 Dark (2017-present)

Netflix’s first German-language series, Dark is a sci-fi thriller that has a plot so intricate that you will be on the edge of your seat throughout the whole show. The premise has been compared to that of Stranger Things, but once the events start unfolding, that’s where the resemblance ends.

A boy disappears in a fictionalized version of the German town Winden. Everyone is baffled and both adults and their children try to find the boy – or at least his body. But as the secrets of the inhabitants are slowly uncovered, the mystery turns out to be more complicated than it seemed at the beginning.
