10 Haunted House
Honestly, the scariest thing about this vintage Atari title might be its box art, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worthy of a mention. It’s essentially a simple haunted maze game, but there’s easily something to be said for the creepy old-school atmosphere the game provides.
Wandering dark corridors avoiding bats, ghosts, and spiders, it’s all par for the Halloween course. Simple yet effective, it’s certainly a solid way to kick off a festive gaming binge.
9 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Nowadays, gruesome kills and takedowns are pretty standard-issue in most horror-inspired video games, especially survivor titles like Outlast or Resident Evil. But during the days of Atari, it was quite a shock. Like the film it was inspired by, a low-poly representation of Leatherface decapitating a victim was disturbing for the time.
In the early days of the gaming industry, it was rare that gamers got to play the bad guy. Horror fans probably got their first taste of a true slasher experience from this hard-to-find title. It might not be as graphic as more modern titles, but there’s still something eerie about the game.
8 Halloween
Yet another example of a slasher movie turned video game, Halloween on Atari could arguably be considered one of the first true examples of a survival-horror game. Playing as “The Babysitter,” gamers have to rescue the kids in the multicolored house before the knife-wielding masked slasher Michael Myers can get to them.
While it doesn’t exactly resemble the film, it does make excellent use of John Carpenter’s theme every time Michael appears on screen. Sure it’s a bit basic, but it definitely gets the point across.
7 Zombies Ate My Neighbors
For something with a little bit more humor mixed in with the horror, players can’t go wrong with this SNES gem. Zombies Ate My Neighbors is equal parts challenging as it is fun. The undead hordes might not be as unkillable as their movie counterparts, but there are enough winks and nods to classic horror films here to satisfy any fan of the genre.
With zombies, vampires, werewolves, and a chainsaw-swinging madman, the game has more than enough monsters to go around. Plus, unlike the previous two entries, this is one horror game that anyone of any age can enjoy.
6 Clock Tower
Point-and-click adventures are a bit of an acquired taste. But when it comes to pure, shocking, and chilling horror titles, few can match the terror of Clock Tower. For a 16-bit title, this game definitely had ’90s gamers clutching their controllers a time or two.
Along with exploring a gothic mansion laden with traps and hazards, players have to evade the murderous Scissorman who could turn up at any given time, resulting in a surprisingly violent ending. Don’t judge a game by its box, because this one is certifiable nightmare fuel.
5 Doom
Not all games have to be about running or escaping, sometimes the best way to defeat one’s demons is to face them head-on. This Halloween, take up a shotgun, chainsaw, and a retro-gaming pastime with the original Doom. Just because it has corridors of scary monsters and mutants doesn’t mean players can’t fight back.
The game that helped solidify the FPS genre is practically a must-own for every decent retro fan, due to the role it played in both the genre and the industry. But the ability to totally trash some gnarly monsters is a bonus as well.
4 Sweet Home
Despite the low-detail graphics, Sweet Home is an unsettling RPG. Considered by classic game fans the seed by which grew the Resident Evil franchise, the game put a party of characters in a decrepit haunted house instead of a fantasy realm.
For an 8-bit game, the title offers some very unnerving experiences, and it can be exceedingly difficult to get all five party members out alive. The top-down effects might be a tad rudimentary, but the cutscenes and encounters are something out of a horror movie.
3 A Nightmare On Elm Street
An action-platformer featuring Freddy Krueger might not seem like the best idea, but for the ’80s, it kind of worked. Though slightly clunky by modern standards, the NES interpretation of A Nightmare On Elm Street was a remarkable product of its time.
Semi-inspired by the third film, The Dream Warriors, the game has the player collecting Freddy’s bones and destroying them to defeat his evil spirit. Somewhat primitive, but full of creative boss fights featuring Freddy’s various forms.
2 Splatterhouse
Sometimes, the simple approach is always the best. That’s a maxim that can certainly be applied to Namco’s Splatterhouse. If Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, and The Thing were all blended into a side-scrolling beat-em-up, the result would be this underrated arcade gem.
This is a game practically made for fans of the over-the-top bloodbaths of ’80s horror. It’s gruesome, it’s gross, it’s an absolute gore-fest. Absolutely ideal for any slasher movie junkie.
1 Castlevania
There’s only one name in the industry when it comes to classic, traditional, and timeless horror. Castlevania. While players can’t go wrong with nearly any title in this iconic franchise, the original NES classic is perhaps what most are looking for when they think of a retro horror game.
The platforming is definitely what many would consider “Nintendo-hard” but there’s an undisputed classic feeling to taking up the whip as Simon Belmont and storming Dracula’s castle. The game features nearly every type of classic monster, a legion of beastly bosses, and imagery worthy of a Universal Monsters spinoff. It has all the tricks and treats for Halloween a player could want.
