Alan Wake 2 Has Endless Ways To Improve On The Original

Alan Wake II, the highly anticipated sequel to Remedy’s iconic psychological horror game, was revealed at the Game Awards 2021 with a compelling cinematic trailer, and will surely innovate on the first game in multiple ways. The first glimpse at Alan Wake 2 captured the gripping dread and narrative weight that made its predecessor a cult hit, showcasing the eponymous character in a new survival-horror setting. Alan Wake 2 will serve as a true sequel to Alan Wake, and will give Remedy the unique opportunity to continue the Alan Wake story in a bold, new direction.

The original Alan Wake, released in 2010, was a cult and critical success. Widely praised for its atmosphere, pacing, and compelling narrative, Alan Wake received numerous awards and accolades, including Time magazine’s best game of 2010 acknowledgment. Though it did not immediately achieve commercial success (its release date competed with Red Dead Redemption), the game gained a cult following and was referenced in other Remedy titles in the years following its release, eventually leading to a full Alan Wake remaster in 2021.

Now, in 2021, Alan Wake 2 is on its way, and much has changed in the world of video game development. The game’s developer, Remedy, has released six games since 2010. Among those are Quantum Break, Control, and Alan Wake Remastered, a remastered version of the original Alan Wake. Each of those games brought something new and interesting to the table, and Alan Wake 2 will likely continue the trend for the developer.

Alan Wake 2 Will Bring Multiple Graphical Upgrades

With the benefit of time passed, Remedy will have a lot to work with this time around. Video game technology has grown exponentially in the past decade. Bold new storytellers have grown in their craft over the past decade, and shared universes between games are creating wider, more immersive experiences. Remedy has also shared that Alan Wake 2 will be a survival horror game, the studio’s first effort in the genre. This means that Alan Wake 2 will be different compared to the original, which should allow Remedy to innovate and develop some of the first game’s less fully formed ideas and mechanics.

Alan Wake was originally released in 2010, and video game graphics have surged ahead through new technologies, programs, and gaming engines in the 11 years since its release. Alan Wake Remastered, released in October 2021, gave a glimpse at how new, improved graphics could revive the world of Bright Falls, and although there have been more detailed remasters in the past, it provides a glimpse of how great the Alan Wake sequel could look. Looking at a high-definition 4K rendering of Alan Wake shows how much graphics have improved. Alan Wake 2 stands to benefit greatly from how emerging technology has changed immersive gaming experiences.

Alan Wake Remastered was well received at launch, with many considering it a successful revival of a cult classic. Looking forward to the release of Alan Wake 2, comparisons can be made to Red Dead Redemption 2, arguably another successful revival of a cult classic. Red Dead Redemption 2 was a long-awaited sequel to a classic, revered title, and improved on the character and environment designs in stunning detail. Red Dead Redemption 2 is still one of the most profitable media projects of all time, selling a whopping 39 million units to date. If Red Dead Redemption and RDR2 is any example for Alan Wake 2, Remedy has much to gain in updating the Alan Wake story today.

Alan Wake 2 Can Feature Improved, Complex Storytelling

The graphics and gameplay mechanics of Alan Wake might not have aged well, but one element of the original cannot be balked at: the story of Alan Wake himself. The story, which took a stylish, episodic approach to the narrative, was what made Alan Wake truly iconic. The dramatic, nightmarish narrative shone brightly with fresh concepts, and included a host of memorable characters. With a decade now having passed since the original’s release, Remedy could experiment with new ideas in the Alan Wake universe.

Although it received mixed reviews, Quantum Break, which was released in 2016, solidified Remedy in its ability to craft a complex, multi-arc narrative. Following the events of a cataclysmic event, Jack Joyce and Paul Serene battle to mend or break time, respectively. Similar to Alan Wake, Quantum Break took on an episodic narrative structure and was the first to incorporate a live-action television series within the game itself. Though Quantum Break’s buggy gameplay tends to distract from its sprawling time travel story, it still supports that Remedy can be trusted to deliver a compelling, complex narrative experience.

Alan Wake’s heady, experimental storytelling approach saw another spiritual revival in Remedy’s triumphant Control. Remedy’s 2019 effort saw Jesse Faden taking control of the Federal Bureau of Control and combatting an extra-dimensional infection known as the Hiss. Control’s paranormal mystery, fractured environments, and unreliable narrators made its dimension-hopping narrative a must-play. Plus, the story’s versatility allowed for a cross-over with the events of Alan Wake in the epic AWE DLC. Control’s gameplay also included a mix of live-action recordings and digital renderings of characters, an interesting wrinkle of visual and narrative design. If Control is any example of how Remedy has grown as a storyteller, then Alan Wake 2 should hopefully be even more compelling than the original.

Alan Wake 2 Should Connect To Control

As previously mentioned, Alan Wake plays a surprisingly important role in Control. First making small appearances in several Easter Eggs within Control’s main story, the events of Alan Wake eventually take center stage in the AWE DLC. Control’s Alan Wake crossover DLC follows Jesse Faden as she pursues a deformed Dr. Hartman, the antagonist from Alan Wake. She eventually kills Dr. Hartman, and at the conclusion of the DLC, she is informed that another AWE report had been discovered. This report, however, takes place in the future, several years from the present events of the game.

This has massive implications for Alan Wake 2. Alan Wake’s presence in AWE could bridge a connection between Alan Wake 2 and Control, in a more complex and involved narrative than smaller easter eggs like those in Alan Wake Remastered. A Control DLC would make sense, but it also wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to see Jesse Faden play an active role in the events of Alan Wake 2 as a protagonist (or antagonist). Remedy’s previous titles have taken big risks in story and gameplay; the two games sharing characters (and a mysterious future date) could mean something big is coming to Bright Falls.

Alan Wake 2 is dripping with potential. The original game has stood the test of time and continues to be a highlight of Remedy’s library. If the game trailer released at the Game Awards this week is any indicator, then the sequel could also deliver upon the potential of the first game, and further enhance Remedy’s burgeoning video game universe.
