The recent Netflix original comedy-drama, Enola Holmes, was adapted from the series of books written by Nancy Springer that chronicle the adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ young sister. Enola Holmes became one of the most-watched films over the past month.

Fun with an important message, the film stars Milly Bobby Brown of Stranger Things fame as the endearing Enola, Sam Claflin as the snooty Mycroft Holmes, Henry Cavill as a young Sherlock, and the brilliant Helena Bonham Carter as the mother of the entire Holmes clan. Cavill was an unusual choice to play the legendary literary sleuth, but interestingly, left a pleasant enough impression as the genius detective even in the relatively little screen time his character received. Here are a few reasons why the dashing actor was even better than Benedict Cumberbatch’s hit portrayal of the iconic detective, and vice versa.

10 Cavill: A Sane Head On His Shoulders

The film showed Sherlock Holmes during his early years, possibly even before he crossed paths with Dr. John Watson who was to become his lifelong friend and ally.

Holmes here is of calm, mild temperament, not easily rattled, and has the sanest head among all the Holmes offsprings. Unlike his puffed up, snobbish older brother, Holmes is low-profile and hence, surprisingly placid and reassuring.

9 Cumberbatch: The Iconic Appearance

The actor’s tall, slim physique replicates to some degree the fictional detective’s iconic physical appearance, a crucial part of his personality.

Holmes was not known to sport black curls, of course, but at least Cumbeberbatch managed to bring the detective alive in the public imagination in a way that is slightly more accurate in terms of the original canon. Although Conan Doyle aficionados might not have accepted Cumberbatch as Sherlock without some fight, Cavill was way too Man Of Steel for an intellectual eccentric living in the 19th century.

8 Cavill: More Caring

Cavill’s Sherlock had not been home for many years before his mother disappeared. But he did come looking for her and was shown to be quite caring in his own quiet, introverted way, reminiscing about the past and even remembering about Enola as a young child.

Of course, Cumberbatch’s Sherlock also evolved into an emotionally vulnerable person in time. But Cavill’s was already sensitive to a degree, a fact that apparently led to some dispute with the Conan Doyle Estate.

7 Cumberbatch: The Eccentric Genius

Cumberbatch is far more the eccentric genius that fans of Conan Doyle are familiar with that Cavill appears to be. Cumberbatch excels in imbuing Sherlock with the characteristic idiosyncrasies that one associates with Holmes.

From the way he holds himself upright to the way he speaks and prances around are all reminders of Holmes’ often peculiar behavior. Cavill, however, doesn’t appear eccentric at all but all there.

6 Cavill: Less Of A Drama Queen

Cavill’s Sherlock was making a name for himself as quite a clever detective but had probably not reached the height of success that he was destined to achieve. But he is without drama, as quite the foil to his brother Mycroft who is clearly the drama queen in Enola Holmes.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Holmes is a well-known drama queen and each of his deductions is explained with much fanfare to impress his already adoring audience. But Cavill here is among family who are not necessarily enamored by his methods and conducts his investigations quietly without making a public spectacle of them.

5 Cumberbatch: Loner

Cumberbatch’s Sherlock, true to canon, is a bit of a loner, finding it difficult to connect with others. Watson is for all intents and purposes his only friend.

The series also gives very little indication of Sherlock reaching out to his family, especially his brother. Although they helped each other in times of need, they were hardly on the best of terms, and had a complicated relationship.

4 Cavill: More Family-Oriented

On the contrary, Cavill is shown to be a little more attached to his family than Sherlock in the BBC series is ever shown to be.

Unfortunately, Cavill’s Sherlock gets too little to do in too little time, since of course, for once, the film is about his sister and not about the many hair-raising murders he solves. Anyhow, he is shown to be at least more caring about his family than his brother and although not very forthcoming, seems to care for both his mother and sister in a quiet sort of way.

3 Cumberbatch: Star Power

BBC’s Sherlock catapulted Benedict Cumberbatch into superstardom making him one of the most sought-after stars in contemporary times. The series is fast-paced and the script remarkably sharp, witty and well-written but Cumberbatch’s star power definitely helped boost its popularity.

In fact, the show benefitted from Cumberbatch’s star power just as much as the actor’s glamor grew manifold from having been on the show.

2 Cavill: Happy To Take Back Seat

Cavill’s Sherlock naturally does not get enough limelight in Enola Holmes but his character is also happy to take a back seat while leaving the spotlight to his sister who is years younger than him.

The film takes a feminist approach to empower the women in Sherlock’s life, his mother, and his sister. Of course, Holmes would have had a mother, even if not a sister, but it had never occurred to fans to wonder about them. In Enola Holmes, Sherlock willingly gives up the glamor of being the ingenious detective for his sharp little sister and her escapades.

1 Cumberbatch: More Evolved

To be fair, this is hardly Cavill’s problem that his character failed to follow a developmental arc. Enola Holmes is about his sister and Holmes himself is merely a supporting character as Enola goes gallivanting around, looking for and solving mysteries.

Since Cumberbatch had four seasons to let his character evolve, it stands to reason that he would have a much more layered arc. His Sherlock went from childish and immature to comparatively more mature and understanding. One of the most powerful scenes in the show’s history happens in season 4 when Sherlock hugs Watson while comforting him after his wife’s shocking death.
