Minecraft recently released its’ 1.17 update, which serves as the first part of the Caves & Cliffs update. Although most of the main features will be included in the second part, which is arriving during late 2021, 1.17 still has included some great things.

New building blocks, new mobs, and even new in-game settings allow the players to add a unique new twist to their survival world. The main aspect of this update is that it provides numerous new building blocks that players can utilize for some distinctive and imaginative designs.

10 Bone Meal On Moss

One of the newly added features is the Moss Block. Currently, it can only found in chests within mineshafts, thus making it one of the hidden items that only true fans will be able to find.

The main feature of this block is that if it is placed down next to other blocks, and the player uses bone meal on it, it can transform nearby blocks into moss blocks and azalea leaves. This is also the only way to currently get azalea bushes, which can grow into trees.

9 Azalea Leaves As Flowers

After getting Azalea bushes through moss blocks, the player can use bone meal on the bushes in order to grow them into azalea trees. Although these trees have the same logs as the oak tree, they bear two unique leaves: azalea leaves and azalea flowers. The flowers look exactly like the normal leaves but they have a few flowers on top.

These can be used as flowers for bees to pollinate, thus allowing for some unique beehive designs. If the player decides to use some of the best Minecraft texture packs, they can get some pretty unique looks on their flower farm.

8 Breeding Axolotls

Axolotls are one of the few new mobs added in 1.17. Currently, they can be founded either in cave ponds or swimming in the deep oceans. Their unique feature is that they can be caught with water buckets and then placed wherever the player wants, as long as there is water.

Afterward, if there are two or more, they can be bred through a bucket with tropical fish. Although not the easiest to find, breeding them is worth it since they offer protection from drowned mobs.

7 Deepslate Ores With Silk Touch

One of the new blocks is the deepslate, which can be found deep underground in caves. The best part is that deepslate is a variation of cobblestone and ores can spawn on it. There can be deepslate iron, copper, coal, redstone, etc.

All of these, if mined with silk touch, give the player some cool-looking blocks to use for their building designs. The redstone emits a dim dark-red light, ideally used for brewing rooms, or even for recreating some of the most impressive buildings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

6 Drowned Dropping Copper

Copper is the only ore that was added in this update and it is used primarily for cosmetic purposes (you can’t make tools with it). Although the main way to find it is through mining, it can also be dropped by killing drowned mobs, similar to how zombies can drop iron.

Since copper blocks are expensive, players will need all the copper they can find if they want to build with it.

5 Finding Amethyst Geodes Easily

Amethyst geodes are small biomes that can be found underground and are the only way of finding the new blocks of calcite and amethyst. It might seem tricky to find through random mining since they are rare, but there is an easier way.

The easiest way is to find a deep ocean and travel around with a boat while looking for black tips of basalt that are slightly higher than the ocean floor. These geodes add some unique purple-colored block which can be the perfect inspiration for some of the most impressive and massive Minecraft builds.

4 Rails Don’t Break With Water

Since rails were introduced, they were immediately destroyed when water was thrown on them, similar to torches, carpets, and other items. However, now, they appear to be fully immune to water. This could allow for some unique underwater railways (as long as they are short enough for the player to avoid drowning), without having to use glass or any other block around.

These will allow the player to move faster throughout the map and will be useful especially when trying to visit some of the coolest seeds in Minecraft.

3 Enabling Dark Mode

One of the most popular features in websites recently has been the addition of dark mode, which is a lifesaver when browsing at night.

Minecraft added a similar feature that can be found through Options, then Accessibility Settings, and then by setting the Monochrome Logo to “on.” This is ideal for nighttime gaming sessions without having to deal with a bright interface.

2 Breaking Tinted Glass

In Minecraft, breaking any type of glass without using the Silk Touch enchantment, leads to the glass breaking and the block being destroyed.

For some reason, the newly added tinted glass, which is crafted with amethyst crystals, can be broken and retrieved without having Silk Touch, even with bare hands. It is not yet clear if this is a bug or a feature, but misplacing tinted glass now is not an issue.

1 New Achievements

With new items, new achievements are added, as well. Looking through parrots and ghasts via a spyglass, saving a villager from a bolt of lightning via a lightning rod, and walking on powdered snow with leather boots in order not to fall through are the four new achievements that have been added in 1.17.

They are easy to get, apart from the lightning one, which requires some luck, so game completionists will have some extra things to do.
