Monster movies are a pillar of the horror genre, it’s been that way practically since the dawn of the genre. With such classic monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein laying the foundation for their descendants, it’s easy to see why fans keep coming back for more.

Thanks to the work of many make-up and effects artists, practical effects have created some of the most terrifying creatures better than CGI ever could. It’s this sense of realism that helps make them so scary, and many of these monsters have inspired modern techniques to recreate the same sense of grounded ghoulishness, even in today’s horror films.

10 Gremlins (Gremlins)

Stripe and his army of grinning, green, goblin-like minions of Gremlins fame might be more creepy than straight-up scary, but the use of scary practical horror effects helped create one of the genre’s most beloved monster movies.

Although they were equal parts mischievous and malicious, the effects that created the little monsters made them feel 100 percent genuine. And despite the side-effects and hazards that came with living with one, the movie made everyone want to adopt a Mogwai — hopefully remembering not to feed him after midnight.

When a movie wins an Oscar for best makeup effects, it’s a safe bet that the results were nothing short of amazing. Enter Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with its incredibly impressive monstrous forms for the count. From vampire and wolfman to bat creature, Dracula is a man of many forms and faces, thanks to these effects.

Gary Oldman might have brought the character to life, but the amount of detail that went into making his Dracula stand out from the competition is absolutely remarkable. There’s no doubt that this version was a heavy influence on many other adaptations that followed.

8 Merman (The Cabin In The Woods)

It might have sounded ridiculous on paper, but the murderous merman seen amongst the purge in The Cabin in the Woods was easily one of the scariest monsters in the movie. And what looks like a horrible amalgamation of greek myth and Lovecraftian horror was actually an excellently crafted practical prop.

The merman was clearly one of the creatures where the designers were just turned loose to be as creative and creepy as they could. Needless to say, the results speak for themselves.

7 The Transformation (An American Werewolf In London)

Werewolves are one of the most common creatures in horror, and not exactly new material. However, An American Werewolf In London took a common trope and turned it into something gnarly, gruesome, and almost painful to watch.

The most iconic scene out of this frightening, Academy-Award-winning John Landis movie was the transformation created with puppets, makeup, and even a splash of gore. It truly gave a new direction for the hair-raising experience of lycanthropy, making it a process no one would want to go through.

6 Krampus (Krampus)

Practical effects are the true stars of this fan-favorite Christmas horror movie, and Krampus himself is the main event. While he might be accompanied by twisted toys and evil elves, the shadow of St. Nicholas is the real feat of masks and monster makeup magic.

Krampus is absolutely massive and a feat to perform, thanks to monster-actor Luke Hawker. Weta Workshop definitely pulled out all the stops for this ancient Christmas creature, and they spared no detail, from his mask to the intricacies of his chains.

5 Brundle-Fly (The Fly)

“Be afraid, be very afraid.” The ’80s were a great time for horror movies, especially if they had practical effects. But if there were an award for most gruesome and gross effects, that title definitely goes to David Cronenberg’s remake of The Fly.

Jeff Goldblum’s hideous progression from sane and sensible scientist to horrifying human-fly hybrid is absolutely disgusting. Thanks to films and effects like those featured in the movie, the body-horror genre was essentially introduced and redefined for horror fans everywhere.

4 The Pale Man (Pan’s Labyrinth)

When it comes to monsters, there’s no one who knows the field better than Guillermo del Toro. The director’s cast of creatures and monsters could already fill a list, but when it comes to scary and practical, fans typically turn to the ravenous Pale Man of Pan’s Labyrinth.

While his eyes might be CGI, the costume and presence are all too real. The costume and its performer, Doug Jones, work harmoniously to create one of the most unsettling creatures in Del Toro’s filmography.

3 Chucky (Child’s Play 2)

The infamous killer doll has been keeping viewers up at night since 1988, but the popular second entry in the franchise was where Chucky’s personality and effects became more defined. The first film was a critical and financial success, which allowed the red-headed terror to come back better than ever for the sequel.

The film is a clear representation of what good puppeteering can do. While it does take a full team of performers just for Chucky to exist, it’s impossible to deny the creativity and talent behind him (or rather, under him).

2 Xenomorph (Alien)

With a title as simple as Alien, the monster behind the moniker needs to absolutely deliver. Needless to say, the H.R.-Giger-designed nightmare that clawed its way into this sci-fi horror classic was more than what was called for.

Thanks to the Xenomorph, the idea of monsters from outer space was entirely changed for the better. The design of the suit and the puppets for its earlier stages are some of the most disgusting and frightening creations in sci-fi history.

1 The Thing (The Thing)

The only terror from beyond the stars that could possibly outdo the Xenomorph in terms of terror is this sinister shapeshifter from John Carpenter’s The Thing. While the film has its acclaim and reputation, the best element of this film is the creature effects provided by Rob Bottin.

Fear of the unknown plays a big part in the overall terror of the plot, and the various horrific transformations help maintain the monster’s ambiguity. In fact, fans still have questions about The Thing today. Since it can change form at will, it has no true form, it’s just an amalgamation of various hosts it has infected. But the results are gut-wrenchingly visceral.
