Dark Matters joined the ever-growing ranks of promising Syfy shows canceled too soon. Luckily, there are similar shows to ease the pain of its loss.

Dark Matter was a unique science-fiction series on the Syfy channel that didn’t quite get its due. Dark Matter featured a cast of six people who wake up on a starship with amnesia. None of them know who they are or how they got there. It was a fascinating premise with a lot of potential, but the show was canceled after three seasons— something that isn’t uncommon on the network.
Though the series was canceled before all of its plotlines were resolved, there are other sci-fi shows out there that can satisfy that craving. Shows with dark themes, questions of identity, and/or plenty of sci-fi action can be found in shows from both the past and the present.
10 Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Discovery was probably a little too intertwined in larger Trek lore in its first two seasons to be appealing to fans looking for new sci-fi like Dark Matter. But with its brand new third season, the show is shedding some of that baggage.
The crew is launching almost a thousand years into the unknown future of the Federation, allowing it to start over with a clean slate. This gives the crew a sense of being alien in their own backyard, not unlike the main cast of Dark Matter.
9 Nightflyers
Syfy is a little infamous for pulling the plug on intriguing sci-fi premises a little too soon, and Nightflyers is just one example of that. The show focused on a crew of scientists trying to make first contact with a new lifeform, but it doesn’t exactly go according to plan.
The show was based on a novel by George R.R. Martin, who has had just a little bit of success with another television adaptation of one of his works. That said, Game of Thrones maybe got worse as it went on so maybe fans were spared when it came to Nightflyers.
8 The Mandalorian
Identity is a huge theme in Dark Matter, just as it is in The Mandalorian. Fans still don’t know a lot about who Din Djarin, the man behind the mask, actually is, nor do they know anything about The Child. Who people are and who they could be has always been a major theme in Star Wars and in this incredibly popular streaming series it’s even more so. If the first trailer for the upcoming second season is any indication, then the show will continue to explore who these characters are.
7 Battlestar Galactica (2004)
The main characters of Dark Matter effectively don’t know who they are. Many or most of the cast of the early 2000s sci-fi classic Battlestar Galactica were never sure of who they could be. The last survivors of humanity fought a bitter war against the Cylons, who could impersonate them. The only problem was that no one was sure of who was or wasn’t a Cylon.
Battlestar Galactica was a timely and daring show when it debuted, and still is now. It’s also one of the few remakes of a popular franchise that proved even better than the original.
6 Farscape
Farscape is a classic fish out of water story that should appeal to fans of Dark Matter. This iconic television series would appeal to fans of any sci-fi, especially Star Trek or Star Wars. With a huge canvas that explored an unknown part of the galaxy, lots of political intrigue, and a main character who was focused on trying to get home (and hold on to who he was), it’s a great show. It also had its fair share of ups and downs in the cancelation department with Syfy.
5 Lost In Space (2018)
The original Lost In Space TV series from the 1960s was so campy it undermined what was actually a great premise. Taking the Swiss Family Robinson tale and dropping into outer space is still a great idea and the 2018 remake of the series focuses heavily on that.
The Netflix series offers huge production values and the core story about the family trying to get back home has echoes of the cast from Dark Matter trying to remember who they are. The third and final season will debut in 2021.
4 The Orville
The Orville is a different kind of vibe than Dark Matter with a lot more humor, but there’s enough crossover to make it appealing. The show is ostensibly a riff on Star Trek, with maybe a little too much reference to the classic franchise sometimes. But it also engages in a lot of storytelling that distinguishes it as well. With great special effects, fun creature designs, and an expansive universe to play around with, it’s got something for all kinds of sci-fi fans.
3 The Expanse
Unlike Dark Matter, The Expanse survived its initial Syfy cancelation. The hard sci-fi series is about a brewing civil war in the solar system between Earth, Mars, and people living in the asteroid belt. It started out on Syfy but was picked up by Amazon after being canceled.
The series is now going into its fifth season, slated to debut in late December. The Expanse features a broad array of characters with lots of political intrigue and action. It’s based on the novel series of the same name by the author James S.A. Corey.
2 Killjoys
Killjoys is another Syfy series that brimmed with potential. Fans of Dark Matter would certainly appreciate the show’s shady cast of characters. The series follows the adventures of three bounty hunters, one of whom was portrayed by Hannah John-Kamen, perhaps best known for one of the best performances in Ant-Man And The Wasp as the villain Ghost. Killjoys ran five seasons on Syfy and built out a complicated and compelling world for fans to dive into.
1 Vagrant Queen
Vagrant Queen was another Syfy series that didn’t live to its full potential. Syfy canceled it earlier this year after only one short season, but it’s definitely worth a look. One of the more unabashedly space opera television projects in quite a while follows the adventures of Elida, an outlaw and scavenger, who searches for her mother. The action and fun is very Star Wars-esque but a little more adult in some respects. The show was based on a comic book called Vault.
