10 Storylines That Avatar Studios Needs To Explore

Fans around the globe are excited by the prospect of new Avatar content from Avatar Studios, and there are so many great storylines to be explored.

When Nickelodeon announced the launch of Avatar Studios (which is to be helmed by series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko), Avatar fans were left giddy with excitement – and rightly so. There is certainly a lot for fans to be excited about, with the production company promising to produce multiple feature films and television series set within the Avatar universe.

While Avatar Studios does plan to build upon the Avatar content that already exists, they also intend to expand the Avatar world by creating new material. With a franchise as detailed and immersive as Avatar, the creative possibilities for new adventures are endless, and there are some storylines that fans would love Avatar Studios to explore.

10 The Immediate Aftermath Of Avatar: The Last Airbender

One of the most logical places for Avatar Studios to begin their franchise expansion is to pick up exactly where Avatar: The Last Airbender left off. Although this period of Avatar has already been covered through the medium of canon graphic novels in a trilogy entitled Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Promise, it would certainly benefit from a more detailed exploration.

A television series based on the events of The Promise would effectively serve as the fourth season of ATLA, detailing how the newly-crowned Fire Lord Zuko and the rest of Team Avatar deal with the post-war challenges throughout the Four Nations. A fourth season of ATLA would provide Avatar Studios with a solid platform from which to launch future Avatar projects; it would also appease the throngs of fans that have been waiting almost 15 years for more ATLA content.

9 The Search For Zuko’s Mother

While the story of Zuko’s search for his mother has already been explored within the canonical comics entitled Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Search, there is certainly nothing wrong with a screen adaptation of the tale. The graphic novel centers around Zuko and Azula’s search for their mother, a quest that forces them to face a range of familial and supernatural challenges.

A television series based on the events of The Search would be an excellent opportunity for Avatar Studios to expand upon ATLA. Not only would it address one of the biggest cliffhangers from the show (the whereabouts of Zuko’s mother), it would also allow the showrunners to explore the complex relationship between Zuko and Azula in greater depth.

8 The Development Of Republic City

Any content that contributes towards bridging the gap between ATLA and Avatar: The Legend of Korra will certainly be welcomed by fans. One particular moment within this period that must be explored is the development of Republic City and the United Republic of Nations.

Although this has been developed via the graphic novel trilogy entitled Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Rift, there are inevitably going to be areas that a television series could explore in greater depth. A small-screen adaptation of The Rift would allow a wider audience to access the excellent character and story developments that take place within the novels, while also giving Avatar Studios the creative license to expand upon the source material.

7 The Story Of Avatar Kyoshi

Avatar Kyoshi led a long and interesting life, living for an incredible 230 years and witnessing many significant events in the Avatar universe. Kyoshi is the ideal subject for a new project, with an abundance of potential to explore from the Kyoshi era.

Throughout her life, Kyoshi accomplished many things, including founding the Dai Li and the Kyoshi Warriors, overcoming her internal personal struggles, and dealing with the challenges that come with being the Avatar. The events of her life amount to the ideal recipe for a captivating movie or television production, which would be set in a vastly interesting yet relatively unexplored time of Avatar continuity.

6 The Events Following Avatar: The Legend Of Korra

As with ATLA, the events immediately succeeding ATLOK have already been canonized via a series of graphic novels, entitled The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars and The Legend of Korra: Ruins of the Empire. The novels detail how Avatar Korra handles the aftermath of Kuivira’s invasion of the United Republic of Nations while also developing Korra and Asami’s relationship arc.

There is no reason why Avatar Studios should not pursue a small-screen adaption of the events depicted with Turf Wars and Ruins of the Empire, as they contain some excellent source material that would benefit from further exploration and development.

5 A Chronicle Of The Hundred Year War

Avatar Studios should certainly consider producing content based on the Hundred Year War, as this period contains some of the most significant events in the Avatar timeline. There is a plethora of epic tales that can be explored during the Hundred Year War, all within the context of an Avatar-less world.

Avatar Studios might opt for more recent storylines such as Iroh’s siege of Ba Sing Se and Zuko’s banishment, or they may wish to begin at the start of the war, with the Air Nomad Genocide and the ensuing chaos. Regardless, the Hundred Year War is an ideal era within the Avatar timeline to base new content on.

4 The Story Of Avatar Roku

Avatar Roku, the predecessor of Avatar Aang and a recurring character in ATLA, lived during a time within the Avatar universe where the political landscape was very nuanced and complex. It was a time of nationalist expansion and tension between the Four Nations, ultimately leading to the Hundred Year War.

Central to Roku’s story is his lifelong friendship with Fire Lord Sozin, who is ultimately responsible for starting the Hundred Year War and is enabled to do so by Roku’s reluctance to kill him. Roku’s role within the politics and tensions between the Four Nations during this time would be a fantastic subject for a feature film, and watching him attempt to tackle his world-altering dilemmas would make for an enthralling watch.

3 A Brand-New Avatar (After Korra)

An obvious venture for Avatar Studios to embark upon is the continuation of the Avatar story through the introduction of a new Avatar after Korra. This gives them the opportunity for a fresh start with unlimited potential for new storylines.

As a result of the era in which ATLOK was set, the next Avatar will likely exist in a relatively modern world similar to the one that exists today, which will certainly add an interesting dynamic to the storyline. However, Avatar Studios may choose not to align the development of the Avatar world with reality, and it is, of course, their creative prerogative to shape the timeline however they please.

2 The Story Of The Kyoshi Warriors

There is certainly a great deal of creative leeway in terms of developing content about the Kyoshi Warriors, as they are an ancient order with a lot of history, meaning there is a rich tapestry of stories for writers to choose from. The Kyoshi Warriors also give Avatar Studios creative flexibility in terms of the medium in which to portray them; both an Avatar feature-length film and a television series would be appropriate platforms to depict the Kyoshi Warriors’ story.

There are many Kyoshi Warriors storylines that would make for excellent productions, namely, their initial establishment during the Avatar Kyoshi era, their role during the Hundred Year War, or their role after the Hundred Year War.

1 The Adventures Of Team Avatar As Adults

For all of the canonical and non-canonical Avatar content out there, the material that covers Team Avatar in their adult years is certainly lacking in terms of quantity. Avatar Studios should seek to rectify this by producing content that bridges the 70-year gap between the events of ATLA and ATLOK.

Avatar Studios has plenty of creative options in terms of storylines to explore during this period of Avatar, they can create content with brand-new adventures or even revisit some of the storylines alluded to in ATLOK, such as Avatar Aang’s battle against Yakone. Regardless of the direction that Avatar Studios chooses to take, fans would certainly be appreciative of seeing a fully-fledged Team Avatar on their screens once again.
