Since Generation I, Pokémon with only Psychic typing have always been among the strongest, certain Pokémon of this type outshine the rest.

When Pokémon was first released, the Psychic-type was one of the most dominant. The only type that resisted it was itself, and the only type that was super-effective against it was Bug. It was also immune to Ghost-type attacks. Generation II brought Psychic down significantly with the introduction of the Steel-type, which resisted Psychic, and the Dark-type, which was immune to Psychic and also super-effective against it. This generation also made Ghost-type attacks super-effective against Psychic.
Even after these changes, the type remained strong, and it still features some of the best Pokémon in the main series games today. Whether they are available for a large portion of a playthrough, late-game additions, or only accessible through specific events, these pure Psychic-type Pokémon are all great on a team.
10 Espeon
Out of every Eeveelution in the Pokémon franchise, Espeon is one of the best. As such, it does not disappoint as a Psychic-type. It has a great Speed stat and high Special Attack, letting it use the Special Psychic moves it has to devastating effect. However, when leveling up, Espeon does not have access to many Special attacks that are not Psychic, limiting its coverage options.
While it can learn more through TMs and TRs, these items can be valuable resources depending on the generation. Also, Espeon has high Special Defense but low HP and Defense, making it vulnerable to Physical attackers.
9 Uxie
Uxie benefits from high defensive stats, but it is otherwise fairly underwhelming. Its HP is decent, but the combination of this stat and its Defense or Special Defense is not enough to make it an exceptional tank. In addition, Uxie’s Speed is relatively high, but its offensive stats are not enough to capitalize on this.
As a Legendary, Uxie is a capable Pokémon, but its only decent stat spread and limited move options through leveling up leave it behind stronger Psychic-types.
8 Azelf
With a high Speed stat and the offensive capabilities to back it up, Azelf is a decent glass cannon. Both its Attack and Special Attack share the same stat value, allowing Azelf wider coverage depending on the matchups it faces. However, most of its Physical moves are only available through TMs and TRs.
Azelf’s only available Physical attacks through leveling up are Last Resort, Explosion, and Natural Gift, all of which are only situationally useful and the last of which is not available in Generation VIII. Additionally, if Azelf cannot take enemies out in one hit, it may be in trouble because of its low bulk.
7 Mesprit
The Lake Trio is unfortunately not the best when compared to every Legendary trio in Pokémon, but Mesprit can hold its own. Its even stat spread across its offensive and defensive stats give it the ability to take hits and deal them out well. While its Speed is lower than that of its counterparts, Mesprit’s decent bulk often lets it survive for several turns.
Unfortunately, like Uxie and Azelf, Mesprit suffers from a poor move pool, but it can deal enough consistent damage over its usually lengthy battles to wear opponents down first. It is not the strongest Legendary around, but its great stat spread makes it a competitor.
6 Mega Alakazam
Since Generation I, Alazakam has been one of the go-to Psychic-types, and reasonably so. Its high Speed and Special Attack make it a great glass cannon. However, its poor bulk leaves it even more vulnerable than Espeon. With the introduction of Mega Alakazam, though, the Pokémon received a major upgrade.
Its defensive stats and HP remain underwhelming, but with a significant boost to its Special Attack and Speed, Mega Alakazam can take out a large number of enemies in a single strike. A downside is that it is only useful when its Special moves are not heavily resisted, as its Attack stat is minuscule.
5 Cresselia
In Generation IV, Cresselia had one of the best Legendary events in Pokémon, and this fascinating introduction set the stage for a great Psychic-type. This Pokémon is an exceptional tank, as it has a fantastic HP stat and great defensive stats. Its offensive stats are lacking, but Cresselia is good at taking its time in battle.
Its move pool gives it access to powerful Psychic moves and coverage moves of other types. One of its most popular moves is Moonblast, a Fairy-type attack that helps to deal with Dark-types, one of Psychic’s biggest threats.
4 Mew
Mew, the first Mythical Pokémon in the series, set the trend that gave certain Mythicals an even stat spread. This limits Mew to being a jack of all trades but master of none, but the stats are high enough to make it capable in every area.
Like the Lake Trio, Mew has few attack options through leveling up. However, through move tutors, TMs, and TRs, Mew can learn most moves in the Pokémon world. If trainers are willing to use their resources on Mew, it can be a reliable choice for a team. They must first acquire one, though, which can be difficult.
3 Deoxys
One of the biggest draws of Deoxys is its ability to change forms, which also redistributes its stats. This allows it to fill any role it needs to, shining in every specialty. For example, Speed Forme Deoxys is one of the fastest Pokémon in the franchise. As a result of specializing, though, its other stats become underwhelming.
Speed Forme has the most evenly distributed stats, but its non-Speed stats are not great by Mythical standards. This is especially true of its HP stat, which maintains the same low value regardless of Deoxys’s form. On the other hand, if trainers carefully choose Deoxys’s form and utilize it to its full potential, it can be incredible.
2 Necrozma
Though the Psychic/Dragon-type Ultra Necrozma is stronger and makes for one of the most memorable mainline Pokémon boss fights, Necrozma in its base form also deserves some attention. The pure Psychic-type has a fairly even stat distribution, but its higher Special Attack lets it do a great deal of damage, especially with its exceptional signature moves: Photon Geyser and Prismatic Laser.
Necrozma’s defensive stats are fair but not incredible, but its signature Ability Prism Armor reduces super-effective damage taken. Necrozma is very powerful, even if it is not quite as impressive as its other forms.
1 Mega Mewtwo Y
Without its Mega Evolution, Mewtwo would still be among the best Psychic-types, if not the best one. With its pure Psychic-type Mega Evolution, though, it leaves its competitors far behind it. Its Attack stat is fantastic, but its Special Attack stat is monstrously high. It also has a great Speed stat, letting it move faster than most opponents and defeat them with one hit.
Mega Mewtwo Y’s only real weakness is its unimpressive Defense stat, but with its high HP and every other stat working for it, this is rarely a problem.
