No one ever really wants to be in a life-threatening situation, in a moment where they’re battling insurmountable odds in a story full of twists and turns. After all, that’s what video-games are for, allowing players to live out moments like these. That’s especially true with survival horror games.
In recent years, survival horror games have taken the world by storm with most titles enthralling audiences. Some, however, like The Last Of Us Part II, miss the mark and stir up so much controversy, it makes gamers think back on similar survival horror games with much better stories, characters, and scares that they can recall fondly playing.
10 Dead Space (2008)
Zombies plus outer space. That’s all Dead Space really is as it’s the idea of adding an undead element to the unknown reaches of space. The concept alone lifts the idea of the game and pushes it to the forefront of survival horror games.
On the story side of things, Dead Space follows Isaac Clarke, an engineer aboard a ship that’s become infested with undead aliens called necromorphs. Battling against the necromorphs, staying alive, and just surviving is all one really needs to tell a good survival horror story and would make for a pretty good movie as well.
9 Alien Isolation (2014)
Who would’ve thought that video games would be able to continue on a movie’s legacy? Ever since Ridley Scott unleashed Alien on the big screen alongside some breathtaking concept art, audiences have imagined what it would be like to be one of those survivors and were given the answer through Alien Isolation.
Following Ellen Ripley’s daughter after the events of the first film as she searches the galaxy for her missing mother, Amanda Ripley struggles to survive the Xenomorph threat. Although a little long, the tense and intricate story works as a fantastic sequel/prequel.
8 Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010)
It’s crazy how insane some of the stories games can tell are. From amazing ideas to wild storylines that connect as the game goes on, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, is one such game that messes with the player’s minds in the best way possible.
Starting the game out as a young man with no memory of his past and being hunted by a “shadow,” the players slowly uncover the mystery. Racing through a sprawling castle and discovering the truth behind the amnesia is great and this also lets players choose their own ending.
7 Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Games are often allowed to go crazy with their ideas. If anything, it makes the game more unique. Yet, there are times when good games go too far, with an amazing story like Silent Hill 2, a series that inspired some amazing horror games.
Dropping players into the life of James Sunderland who arrives in the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his dead wife, the story only gets more shocking from there. From the debut of the iconic Pyramid Head to a dog controlling the events of the game, Silent Hill 2 is as crazy as they come.
6 Outlast (2013)
Sometimes, it’s the simple stories that end up being the best. While all games and stories have depth and layer to them, that’s not to say that the core idea and story can’t be simple or easy to follow to some extent, like with Outlast.
The game starts off simple enough, with freelance journalist Miles Upshur investigating experiments at an asylum. The game, of course, gets more and more out there, from insane executives to a ghostly entity that makes the story simple and complex at the same time.
5 The Evil Within (2014)
Typically, when someone plays one of these games, they encounter monsters and evils residing in the “real world.” the physical plane. In The Evil Within, the horror is literally in the mind or rather one’s subconscious mind.
Even though the story of The Evil Within is a little weak, the concept behind it is somewhat amazing. Following Detective Sebastian Castellanos as he battles his way through an unreal and horrific world, players are granted some stunning visuals and brutal monsters in this mind-bending story. Although it could be said that the sequel is even better.
4 Clock Tower (1995)
Influences come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. For many gamers, they may see a game made in 2018 as being the way they got into gaming. For others, it may be something like the forgotten video game Clock Tower that got them into games in general.
Seen as being a pretty big influencer on the horror genre, Clock Tower tells the story of a young orphan trying to escape from a mansion called Clock Tower and in the process, takes on monsters, the occult, and tedious puzzles in a unique horror tale.
3 Until Dawn (2015)
Sometimes the best stories are the ones that the players get to make happen. Interactive games have always been a large part of the community but Until Dawn took it to a whole other level, diving deep into the horror genre and creating dozens of paths in the process.
When a group of teens gathers at a lodge in the mountains, they find themselves attacked by psychopaths, monsters, and more. The subversion of horror cliches and the “choose your own adventure” style allows the game to speak for itself and got players interested in some horror movies as well.
2 Resident Evil 4 (2005)
For years, the franchise known as Resident Evil has always been seen as an influencer and wide contributor to the survival horror genre with Resident Evil 4 being a big contributor.
Set six years after the first games, the fourth installment sees Leon Kennedy encountering a deadly virus called Las Plagas in a small village in Spain while searching for the President’s daughter. Fighting against mind-controlled villagers, horrific monsters, some difficult boss battles, and time itself as Leon’s infected, the story RE4 presents is intricate, fast-paced, and terrifying to the very end.
1 The Last Of Us (2013)
Fans often say that the sequel is always better than the original. In this case, the opposite is true. Fans of The Last Of Us waited years to get a sequel and while TLOUP2 divided fans, it allows them to agree The Last Of Us will always be one of a kind, even with a TV adaptation on the way.
A bleak survival story set twenty years in the future and following Joel and Ellie as they trek across the monster-infested US, TLOU story is emotional, heart-wrenching, brutal, and all around the perfect survival tale for all fans.
