Survivor and the MCU are two of the biggest franchises in history. Many of the characters in both share similarities you might not have realized.

There have been countless Survivor heroes over the course of the show’s forty seasons, from fan favorites robbed of the million dollars to villains redeeming themselves. The show has seen it all. It should come as no surprise that the only other franchise with as many heroes to wow audiences this century is Marvel.

The juggernaut – and most successful – film franchise of all time has seen dozens of heroes come through its ranks, with new ones being added in every installment. While there’s no one on Survivor that has quite the same powers as the heroes of the MCU, after so many years and so many players, there are bound to be a few similarities.

10 James Clement & War Machine

Gravedigger James was a shy and strong All-star who first appeared in Survivor: China, but went on to become a fan favorite in the franchise, reappearing in Micronesia and Heroes vs. Villains. Much like Colonel Rhodes of the Iron Man franchise, James was a workhorse with his own unique sense of humor.

The similarities don’t stop there though, as both were unfortunately very injury prone. War Machine broke his back in the famous Civil War fight, while James lost both of his last two appearances on Survivor because of injuries.

9 John Cochran & Dr. Strange

In retrospect, it makes sense that the nerd who did a Ph.D. on Survivor’s game theory would eventually end up being one of the smartest contestants to ever play the game and win it all. That being said, in his earliest season Cochran was looked at just as much the smart but awkward outcast as Dr. Strange was when he first arrived at the temple.

But, they both grew into their powers. Dr. Strange would eventually evaluate every possible future to determine the one way to defeat Thanos, just as Cochran would stay ten steps ahead of his allies and enemies in his returning season.

8 Tai Trang & Ant-Man

Tai, the new school player who won audiences’ hearts with his inspiring backstory, miniature stature, quick wit, and deep love for animals. He was just as smart a player as he was a comic, which makes his parallels with Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man even more apt.

Both of Tai’s seasons, he went far – making it final tribal once, and then missing the second one by only a single day. And while Ant-Man has no such victories under his belt, if he had been cast on Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty, he would definitely want Tai’s spot on the beauty tribe.

7 Ozzy Lutsh & Black Panther

Ozzy, one of the most beloved players in Survivor history, was the ultimate competitor. No one could run further, swim faster, or climb higher than Ozzy. He dominated every challenge he was a part of (besides an early challenge that he intentionally threw for strategy).

In that way, the fan favorite much resembles the MCU’s equally beloved Black Panther. T’Challa beat his enemies with his strength, brains, and charisma, just as Ozzy did. Who would win immunity if these two were pit against each other is anybody’s guess.

6 Cirie Fields & Wanda Maximoff

Few players came in and bent the course of the game to their will as Cirie did. The nurse, who famously went from her couch to the island, didn’t just run circles around first time players, she changed the trajectory of an entire alliance in the All-Star season with no help and no immunity idol.

She didn’t even have to wave her hands to change peoples’ minds. Something that Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, can’t say. Just as Wanda is proven increasingly powerful, Cirie will always be remembered as one of the most powerful players in Survivor history.

5 Rupert Boneham & Thor

It’s safe to say that even after more than thirty seasons since he first appeared on the show, there has never been a Survivor more loved and lionized than Rupert. The big-bearded, dress-wearing guidance counselor (who doubled as a pirate) became the heart of Survivor, inside and outside the show.

During his time on the Pearl Islands (among many other destinations), he was at the center of nearly every alliance he was a part of, he put his team on his back during challenges, and he was dangerously well-liked. Add a flying hammer and you know who you’ve got?

4 J.T. Thomas & Star-Lord

One of the only unanimous winners to ever play the game, J.T. was the head of a motley crew of characters in Brazil. Taken from the American south, J.T. won everyone over with his toothy grin, brotherly attitude, and an overwhelming sense of fun.

But behind that charm, proved to be a serious threat during challenges and tribal councils. Star-Lord, the mid-western outcast at the helm of the Guardians of the Galaxy, also won folks over with his fun-loving-attitude and sense of humor. Plus, would it be that crazy if J.T. revealed his best friend was a raccoon?

3 Sandra Diaz-Twine & Captain Marvel

Sandra, the loud-mouthed mom who could sink into the shadows, not only won Survivor – she won it twice in two attempts. Much like Captain Marvel, Sandra couldn’t be stopped when she got hot. She came in late in the game and just took control, saving her allies, voting out her enemies, and making sure that when the final ballots were cast she was sitting next to the people she knew she could beat.

There may be nobody in the MCU more powerful than Carol Danvers. The same can certainly be said about Sandra.

2 Colby Donaldson & Captain America

Colby Donaldson, the face of Survivor: Australian Outback and many-time All-Star, is pretty much the literal embodiment of Captain America. He won more individual immunities in one season than any other player ever, he brought a state flag as his personal item, he is famously selfless, and – if memory serves – he tore a log perfectly in half.

Wait, that last one may have been Steve Rogers. It’s tough to remember since Colby was just as much a sweet but dominant force in his time on the show. Colby and Cap are two sides of the same American-made coin.

1 Boston Rob & Iron Man

Take away the goatee and the overwhelming ego, what do Boston Rob and Tony Stark have in common? Well to start: They both redeemed themselves from being regarded as villains, they both found love while battling their enemies, they both mentored the up-and-coming youth, and, most importantly, they both became and remain the faces of their franchises.

There is not a more recognizable name in Survivor history – or possibly even game show history – than Boston Rob, just as there is not a more identifiable Marvel superhero than Iron Man. If you put Boston Rob in Stark’s suit, and Tony Stark in a Survivor buff, nothing would change. History would play out exactly the same. Boston Rob really can say, “I am Iron Man.”
