Most actors in the Harry Potter movies are not thought of as tall, since viewers watched most of them grow from children into young adults. That said, while there are many short actors in the Harry Potter franchise, there are plenty of taller characters as well.

Height doesn’t necessarily matter, as size doesn’t make a difference in magical ability, and some consider the greatest wizards in the franchise are very small. Most of the main actors, including Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, are in the mid-5 foot range, but many of the minor characters, good and evil, are much taller.

George Harris plays Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Ministry of Magic auror who’s secretly a strong member of the Order of the Phoenix. Harris towers over the other Order members at 6 feet and 1 1/2 inches, or 1.88 meters.

Other Order members, including Molly Weasley, Sirius Black, and Nymphadora Tonks, are on the shorter side, making Kingsley stand out above the rest. While he’s a minor character in the movies, he plays a more prominent role in the books and successfully infiltrates the Death Eater-infested Ministry of Magic.

Ifans, at 6 feet and 1 1/2 inches, or 1.88 meters, towers over Evanna Lynch, who plays his daughter Luna. Lynch stands at a mere 5 feet and 2 inches, or 1.58 meters, giving a stark contrast between them, most noticeable in their goofy but sweet dance at Bill and Fleur’s wedding.

Predrag Bjelac plays Igor Karkaroff, the Headmaster of the all-boys wizarding school Durmstrang, introduced to fans during the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Years prior, he was a Death Eater in the First Wizarding War and spent time in Azkaban for his allegiance.

Death Eaters kill Karkaroff for his betrayal after he flees when Voldemort makes his return. Karkaroff is an intimidating man, standing at 6 feet and 4 inches, or 1.95 meters. Although he’s physically daunting and willing to do whatever he can to ensure Durmstrang wins the tournament, he’s cowardly and his actions ultimately lead to his own death.

John Cleese plays Nearly-Headless Nick, the house ghost of Gryffindor, who befriends Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The three kids even attend Nick’s Deathday Party to celebrate the day he was almost decapitated five hundred years before, leading to nickname and his demise.

At 6 feet and 5 inches, or 1.96 meters, John Cleese is the tallest of the ghosts at Hogwarts and has one of the most intriguing backstories. He’s incredibly proud of his (near) decapitation and gets the kids to vouch for him to join the Headless Hunt despite the “half an inch of skin” joining his head and neck.

Martin Bayfield plays the younger version of Rubeus Hagrid that Tom Riddle shows Harry in a flashback during his second year. Hagrid is the loving, kind half-giant who takes in any magical creature in need of help.

After unleashing the monster of the Chamber of Secrets that kills Moaning Myrtle, Tom Riddle finds young Hagrid with Aragog, his pet Acromantula. Riddle then claims the monster is Aragog and gets Hagrid expelled from Hogwarts. Bayfield plays Hagrid in these scenes. He is a staggering 6 feet and 8 inches, or 2.08 meters, making him the perfect choice for the gigantic Hagrid and the tallest actor in all the Harry Potter films.
