Kenny Ortega, the man behind High School Musical, Hocus Pocus, and Descendants among other projects, has been working on a new musical Netflix original. Julie And The Phantoms premiered on the streaming service in September to positive critical and audience reception, and it seems that fans can’t get enough.

Sixteen-year-old Julie, a Latina heroine, has recently lost her mother. They both shared a passion for music, but since her death, Julie hasn’t been able to bring herself to perform. But when the ghosts of three band members show up in the studio where Julie’s mom used to rehearse, Julie sees it as a sign. They become great friends, helping each other find their way back to music, even after the band has been dead for twenty-five years.

10 Riverdale (2016-)

Though Riverdale may be targeted at an older audience than Julie And The Phantoms is, the two series share a few things in common. For one, Riverdale is notorious for its musical episodes (whether or not this is in a good way is up for debate).

Like Julie, some of the characters feel like they’re leaving their comfort zones when they’re pushed into performing in Cheryl and Kevin’s musical productions. Otherwise, the series is very much a high school drama with a twist – one that involves solving murder mysteries and apparently breaking into song one episode per season.

9 Julie e os Fantasmas (2011-2012)

Julie e os Fantasmas is the Brazilian comedy series upon which Julie And The Phantoms is based. Here, Julie is a talented fifteen-year-old musician who meets three ghosts: Daniel, Felix, and Martim.

They form a band, performing in their city while they help her through her other adventures, including her crush on Nicolas. Though the shows are very similar, the Netflix series isn’t exactly the same. Though the show only ran for one season, it won and was nominated for several international awards.

8 Never Have I Ever (2020-)

Another Netflix original, Never Have I Ever follows an Indian-American girl’s awkward high school experiences. Like Julie, Devi has recently lost a parent. After the death of her father, Devi is left unable to walk, but she overcomes this physical trauma with support from her two best friends.

Just like Ortega’s musical series, this one features a diverse cast of characters, though none of them have a particular penchant for music – unless making a TikTok dance video with friends counts. Devi gets herself into plenty of awkward and embarrassing situations just like Julie, and the humor this generates is the greatest similarity between the two shows.

7 Diary Of A Future President (2020-)

Diary Of A Future President is a comedy-drama available on Disney+, the first season of which premiered in January 2020. Since then, the story of twelve-year-old Cuban-American Elena has won the hearts of fans and the approval of critics.

Still in middle school, Elena has dreams of becoming the future president of the United States of America. Newcomer Tess Romero portrays the young protagonist, while Gina Rodriguez portrays Future Elena. Julie fans will love Elena’s ambitious goals, as well as the show’s cultural diversity.

6 Glee (2009-2015)

High school dramas don’t get much more musical than Glee. The show started as a story about a high school teacher who wants to improve the school’s choir. A band of misfits comes together to participate in a challenge, and the rest is history.

Since its first season aired in 2009, the show has grown and expanded in every sense of the word. In I Am Not Okay With This, Sydney Novak is dealing with the recent loss of her father, while at the same time, she discovers that she possesses mysterious superpowers. These powers become apparent when she’s feeling particularly anxious or angry. Julie’s power is her music, which she uses to channel her emotions.

4 Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (2018-2020)

For viewers who enjoyed the more supernatural side of Julie And The Phantoms, the Archieverse series Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina is a perfect choice. The series is suitable for an audience slightly older than Kenny Ortega’s musical series, but is still great for young viewers.

Sabrina is a half-witch, half-mortal teenager who attends a regular high school along with her mortal friends. However, she must decide whether or not she wants to commit herself to the Dark Lord by her sixteenth birthday. The series also drifts into musical territory a few times, with an accompanying song and music video called “Straight To Hell”.

3 Descendants (2015)

Descendants is a movie series directed by Kenna Ortega, with music, fantasy elements, and even some of the cast members from Julie And The Phantoms. The children of some malicious villains are invited to attend a prestigious school, where they end up performing a lot of musical numbers about romance and self-love.

Booboo Stewart, who portrays Willie in Julie, plays Jay in Descendants, while Cheyenne Jackson – the evil Caleb Covington in the Netflix series – portrays Hades in the third film, in which Jadah Marie – who plays Julie’s best friend – also appears as Celia.

2 High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2019-)

This Disney+ series is set in the same school where the High School Musical movies were filmed, which gives its students the perfect opportunity to recreate the movies in the form of a musical. Confusing, right?

The characters of the series are forced to work together, rekindling old friendships and forming new ones. Much like Julie and Luke, the two leading characters find themselves drawn to each other while being pushed to the limits in the world of performing.

And of course, any fan of Julie And The Phantoms must watch High School Musical. For those who have already seen it, the similarities are unmissable, with a few intentional callbacks and references strewn throughout.

This franchise is widely considered to be Kenny Ortega’s most memorable work. In the first movie, after a chance meeting, Troy and Gabriella find themselves attending the same school and secretly auditioning for the same musical. Across the three films, they nurture their talents and find their lives changing for the better as they embrace who they really are.
