Horror films are vastly popular for their ability to get under people’s skin and have them cover their eyes in fear. All while still caving into temptation and watching in between. While ghastly horror films are the number one choice, there are some teen horror films that are worth taking a look at.

Teen horror films combine jump scares, eeriness and often times teen angst with a twinge of comedy. If wanting to break away from the typical horror film, Netflix has an array of teen horrors for any spooky movie night. Some might even do a bit better at having you afraid of the dark than Chucky, Freddy Kreuger, or every monster in between.

10 We Summon The Darkness (2019): 5.1

Even though this film was released in 2019, the film’s storyline takes place in the late 1980s. We Summon The Darkness is a horror-thriller film that focuses on three young best friends. Don’t let these girls fool you into thinking they’re the victims. These three catch the attention of a group of boys they met at a rock concert.

They persuade them to go to an empty mansion and they’re grand plot is revealed. These three girls are in fact part of a Satanic cult that murders people in order to instill fear. They are smart, conniving and evil, but will they get away with it?

9 Truth Or Dare (2018): 5.2

Some might remember watching the trailer to this movie on Youtube when looking up upcoming films of 2018. Truth or Dare had an ensemble cast that included Pretty Little Liars star, Lucy Hale as well as Teen Wolf actor, Tyler Posey. The film takes the typical party game into one of horror and fear.

A group of teenagers decides to play Truth or Dare while on vacation. They’re not playing the children’s version but were tricked into playing with the supernatural. If the players don’t comply with the game, it leads to gruesome and fatal consequences.

8 Friend Request (2016): 5.3

It’s no surprise that teen horror films would use social media to make a storyline. In this case, accepting a friend request leads to dire tragedy. A popular girl at school with hundreds of online followers takes pitty on a loner classmate and accepts her friend’s request.

Laura (Alycia Debnam-Carey) realizes that her new friend is showing stalker tendencies and becoming possessive. Laura ultimately defriends her. Things take a turn when the classmate commits suicide and exacts her revenge as a murderous spirit from beyond the grave.

7 Carrie (2002): 5.5

Audiences well know that the 1976 film, Carrie became one of the biggest cult phenomenons when it came to horror films. The storyline was rebooted and redone into a film series and Netflix offers audiences the film, Carrie from 2002. The film only received a 5.5 ranking and is described on Netflix as a “Teen Scream” and “Supernatural Horror.”

The premise is similar to the orignal where a girl named Carrie (Angela Bettis) is bullied by her classmates. In this film, audiences see what happens to her in a series of flashbacks. A detective is investigating Carrie’s disappearance while she is also the mains suspect of arson.

6 Wildling (2018): 5.9

The horror-fantasy film, Wildling follows a teenage girl who was kept in captivity all her life by her father. She was made to fear a creature called a Wildling during childhood. As she grows older, her father medicates her to stunt her female growth. One day she starts to experience fatal side effects and her father tries to kill himself.

Now found by authorities, she tries to live a normal teen life but she starts to change. The reason for her captivity comes to light. Critics praised the film for its gritty and dark comparison to ferocious animals and a misunderstood adolescent. As well as the acting of the main star that drove the storyline forward.

5 Cam (2018): 5.9

Basing your entire life on being camgirl has its fatal consequences. Cam follows the story of a young woman who is obsessed with being number one on a promiscuous website called FreeGirlsLive. She will go to lengthy extremes to gain popularity, even stage a fake suicide.

The story unravels and takes a turn when she discovers that someone or something is posing as her online. She loses control over her life and goes down a rabbit hole into a dark plot of people disappearing and being replaced. Some critics found the film to be smart in its technological portrayal as well as having a twisted and suspenseful turn of events.

4 The Blackcoats Daughter (2015): 5.9

The Blackcoats Daugther stars Kiernan Shipka ion one of the main roles as well as Emma Roberts. The film is split into three parts that connect to each other and come together for the final climax. The first story involves two Catholic school girls who are left stranded at school when they’re parents don’t arrive.

Strange events start to occur as one of the girls divulges into erratic behavior. The second story involves a young woman who is picked up by a married couple after escaping a mental institution. The couple revealed to have a connection to the first story and the girl they are helping isn’t who she says she is. The final story ties together all the stories and what really happened at the school.

3 The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020): 6.0

The Babysitter had a bit of a fan following when it was released on Netflix in 2017. Netflix decided to make a sequel film to continue the story. The young boy from the first film is now grown up but still deals with the same issue from before and some new ones.

Cole (Judah Lewis) was unable to convince anyone that his babysitter and her friends tried to kill him for a Satanic ritual. The same events occur when he attends a lake party and his new friends prove to be cult members. They plan to sacrifice an innocent. Not only does Cole have to deal with new enemies, but his old foes are resurrected as well. Critics felt the film was more of a fun and guilty pleasure watch with good use of gore.

2 Veronica (2017): 6.2

Veronica is a 2017 Spanish horror film that will do the job of scaring the wits out of viewers. The film holds a level of intrigue seeing as its loosely based on the true events of a teenage girl mysteriously dying after using a ouija board. Veronica (Sandra Escacena) is still emotionally scarred from losing her father.

When the teacher at her school teaches the students about dark spirits and to witness the Eclipse, she and her friends have a dangerous plan. They use a ouija board to summon spirits, specifically Veronica’s father. When the glass breaks and Veronica’s blood falls on the board, a demon comes to haunt her.

1 The Babysitter (2017): 6.3

In The Babysitter, a pre-teen boy named Cole thinks he hit it big when his babysitter is a popular and cool teenage girl. Things are fun at first until his babysitter invited her friends over while he goes off to bed. He soon witnesses his babysitter commit murder in order for her and her friends to have a sacrifice for Satanic ritual.

It’s not every day your babysitter is a member of a demonic cult. When the police arrive chaos breaks loose into bloody murder and trying to survive. But never underestimate the drive of a babysitter who seeks power from the Devil. The film had a favorable response with critics praising the film for its fun comedy mixed with bloody gore and the occult.
