Scarlett Johansson gives an incredible performance in this immersively real–yet hauntingly dreamlike–story about her maneating extraterrestrial who lures men to their slow and horrible deaths with the promise of a sexual encounter. Under the Skin really does what it says and offers a fairly unique perspective on the prey and predator dynamic that is so often explored through the horror genre, as it is in It Follows.

5 The Invitation (2015)

Karyn Kusama’s unsettling drama sees a man reunite with his ex-wife at a dinner party, years after the death of their son, and the horrifically awkward conversation between the old friends, new acquaintances, and grief-stricken parents pales in comparison to the steady realization that the hosts have become part of a dangerous cult.

Slow-burning anxiety abounds in this sneakily claustrophobic modern horror masterpiece and It Follows fans won’t mind the absence of the supernatural at all as The Invitation’s reality is far scarier.

4 Ring (1998)

A Japanese horror movie classic, arguably the J-horror classic, Hideo Nakata’s adaptation of Koji Suzuki’s novel quickly became an international sensation and one of the few Asian horror movies of that period to have a genuinely worthy Hollywood remake.

The story of a killer videotape that curses you to die 7 days after you’ve viewed it began a new wave of contemporary curse movies that saw the trappings and habits of modern life become imbued with a new sinister meaning, and it’s safe to say that It Follows owes plenty to its plot and its ever-increasing feeling of impending, inescapable, doom; as do countless other movies.

3 Shutter (2004)

This atmospheric Thai horror movie follows a couple who begin to realize that they’re being stalked by a supernatural presence, not too dissimilar from the kind of ghosts seen in J-horror movies like Ring or Ju-On: The Grudge, but, as always, the real horror is the story at the heart of the reasons why the haunting is taking place.

Shutter took the world by storm in a similar fashion to its J-horror counterparts and spawned several remakes, including an American one, but nothing quite tops the creeping dread of the original.

2 Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter’s smartly simple masterpiece still holds up today as an unnerving movie experience and, as It Follows does, it achieves it with very little blood or budget.

The decision to go with a William Shatner mask painted white over a clown mask for the killer perfectly exemplifies Halloween’s ability to get so much impact out of something so seemingly-small, creating one of the most iconic horror monsters ever with tools anyone could buy from a local store.
