10 Things Fans Forget About Marvel’s Dracula

Dracula is well-known throughout the world, but not as much is known about Marvel’s version of the character. Here are some things you may not know.

It’s officially the season of the creepy and scary. A time where monsters reign supreme and people around the world are looking to immerse themselves in the weird and strange of pop culture and entertainment. That is no different for the fans of the comic book world. One of the characters that best embodies this is Dracula.

In Marvel Comics, Dracula is a well known figure and oftentimes a well known foe of heroes like Blade and Deadpool. He is one of the most powerful supernatural foes to roam the Marvel Universe. Here are ten things to know about Dracula.

10 Born Into Royalty

Not surprising is the fact that Marvel’s Dracula is based on historical figures and classic literary figures as well. Marvel’s Dracula is a man born in the 15th century who became ruler of Transylvania and Wallachia as a child and had constant struggles and battles with the Ottoman Empire.

After siring a child named Lilith with his first wife and marrying a second, Dracula found himself wounded in battle. Brought to a gypsy healer to recover, he was turned into a vampire by the healer (who turned out to be a vampire herself), cursing him for all eternity as well.

9 Fought Nimrod To Gain Power

Fans may be surprised to learn that Dracula didn’t automatically become the ruler of all vampires on Earth. It was a long road to gain the power and strength needed to take over. The ruler of vampires at the time of Dracula gaining his supernatural gifts was Nimrod, the servant of the first vampire ever Varnae.

Wanting to test Dracula, Varnae gave Nimrod some of his power and made him capture Dracula. Giving Dracula the choice to submit or fight, Dracula chose to fight. Despite nearly being defeated, Dracula managed to trick Nimrod and end his life, taking his power.

8 Freed By Frankenstein’s Monster

What fans should know is that Marvels version of Dracula featured the inclusion of the classic novel, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. When he came into conflict with Jonathan Harker and Abraham Van Helsing in the 19th century, he is destroyed and entombed in a cave blocked by a large boulder. However he doesn’t stay there long.

After being in the tomb for a while, Frankenstein’s Monster, the infamous monster created by Dr. Victor Frankenstein, was tricked into removing the boulder covering the tomb and unsealing Dracula’s tomb, allowing the vampire to walk the world once more to control the vampires of Earth.

7 Has Many Arch-Nemeses

When Dracula entered the 20th century and the main Marvel continuity, he found himself with a whole slew of enemies. He would have the occasional battle with well known Marvel heroes like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and even the unique character Howard the Duck. However there were several supernatural based heroes he fought often.

From the descendants of the men who first defeated him Rachel van Helsing and Quincy Harker, to Hannibal King and the Werewolf by Night. However the most popular foe he had has to be Blade, the Daywalker and the most popular supernatural/vampire hunter in Marvel Comics.

6 Took Over Darkhold Cult

One of Dracula’s biggest ambitions in the comics turned out to be riding himself the vampiric nature of his curse so that he could retain his immortality without the negative side effects, such as sunlight being deadly and having to sustain himself on blood. In order to do this, Dracula took control over the Cult of the Darkhold.

The order was created to worship and unleash the power of the magical artifact the Darkhold. He battled the X-Men, Avengers and other heroes constantly in his quest to achieve this goal. It took Doctor Strange using the Darkhold to destroy all vampires to stop him.

5 Returned In Clone Body

After being defeated by Doctor Strange using the Darkhold to enact the Montesi Formula, Dracula was able to return when the Formula’s power began to fade. During this time, his body was taken and DNA was extracted to clone him in a facility controlled and used by HYDRA.

That’s right, everyone’s favorite vampire was brought back to the land of the living after being cloned using his own DNA by the villainous HYDRA organization. They hoped to use him as a weapon they could use themselves, but he managed to escape their control and become the vampire king once more.

4 Attacked UK From Moon Base

One of his biggest attacks in Marvel Comics in the 21st century has to be when Dracula gathered allies Lilith (not his daughter), Baron Blood and Captain Fate, and launched an attack on the United Kingdom from the moon. Building a sanctuary for himself on the moon, Dracula organized a non-aggression pact with Doctor Doom and the Cabal of villains he worked with so neither would interfere with the other’s plans.

From there, Dracula launched a series of specially designed vampires on the UK and began his conquest, nearly succeeding until he was stopped by Black Knight and Excalibur, aka Dr. Faiza Hussain.

3 Slain By Vampire Son

After his failure to conquer the UK, Dracula faced another devastating blow when his own son Xarus, the powerful vampire lord, usurped his throne, united the various vampire clans and ended his own life during the 2010 X-Men storyline Curse of the Mutants. This story also saw Xarus turn Jubilee into one of his vampires.

With an assist from Blade, the X-Men stopped the vampires, captured their friend Jubilee as she retained her vampiric nature, and brought Dracula back to life in order to end Xarus for good, leaving a shaky resolution for the mutants and vampires for a time.

2 Used Vampire Army To Stop Hulk

During the major crossover event Fear Itself, Marvel decided to include the powerful Dracula in the storyline. The story saw heroes and villains alike transformed by powerful weapons into creatures serving the Serpent, aka the god and brother of Odin himself Cul Borson. One of the celestial weapons of Cul’s that contained the essence of his generals The Worthy fell into the Hulk’s hands.

Becoming Nul the Breaker of Worlds, Hulk landed in Transylvania and Dracula sent a legion of vampires called the Forgiven to slow him down. Dracula eventually used an illusion of Betty Ross to free the Hulk from Nul’s control.

1 Deadpool Stole His Bride To Be

In one amusing and fun storyline called Dracula’s Gauntlet, Deadpool was hired by the undead, vampiric king to retrieve his soon to be bride and future queen, a succubus named Shiklah. However as he transports her to Dracula, the two fall in love and she decides to marry Wade before Dracula can claim her as his own.

Angered he was outdone by a moron, he attacked Deadpool. However as the two battled and Deadpool eventually lost his hand (literally), his severed hand stabbed Dracula and poisoned him with some of Wade’s own poisoned blood. Defeated, Dracula escaped and Shiklah became queen of Monster Metropolis.
