Games Workshop recently announced that it is releasing a new version of Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team. The board game turns its attention away from full armies, instead focusing on small teams battling it out on a small map. This game emphasizes individual soldiers and their equipment more so than in the main game, and this playstyle lends itself perfectly to the XCOM format perfectly, although it wouldn’t be the first game in the franchise to do so.

Necromunda: Underhive Wars was another adaptation of one of GW’s side games that followed a similar format. In it, players control a small gang and battles through the lower levels of a hive city. However, the game was relatively simple in scope and didn’t give much information about the main universe. A game based on Kill Team could go even further.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Warhammer universe is the vast array of different alien species that are in constant conflict. Necromunda wasn’t able to portray most of these species due to its focus on a single human hive. However, a Kill Team game would allow each race to have their own teams and battle the other in a canonically-accurate situation. Not only would this allow for variation in-game, but would also allow players to learn more about the universe. If the game used a similar system to XCOM, it would mean that each team was easy to learn, but their differences would be able to be implemented seamlessly.

Having various species available also allows the game to include a variety of weapons for each. Necromunda uses mostly human weapons, but this wouldn’t be the case for a Kill Team game. From the ramshackle guns of the Orks to the biological weapons of the Tyranids, there are so many great options available. However, while there are many differences in appearances and mechanics, each weapon follow a similar system.

This would fit XCOM’s system, which mostly focuses on damage output and hit percentages, allowing the focus to be on the visual aspect of the weapons. This focus on visuals would extend to the game’s levels. While Necromunda had limited options available due to its setting, Kill Team has far more variety available. The board game allows players to set their game on any planet of their choosing and in any setting, from forests to factories to deserts, so a video game could emulate that.

One of the biggest reasons that the Kill Team system would work with XCOM has to do with the way that the game deals with the teams and events. The game allows players to build their teams over a campaign. After each game, the player rolls dice for each character that was wounded to find out if they survived or not. After that, players can hire new units to refill their ranks and each model gains experience and new equipment.

XCOM also uses the concept of characters advancing and being affected by each battle. Players could choose their army and play through an entire campaign with their force evolving as they progress. This system would fit with the original board game and allow the players to try either over time, which would slowly open them to trying new games.

Necromunda: Underhive Wars was a great start to showing different sides to the 40K universe, but it had its limitations. With the re-release of one of the classic specialist games, now is the perfect time for a new video game. While it’s certainly possible to adapt this world into a first-person shooter or another gameplay style, nothing would fit the intent of the original board game quite like taking a page out of XCOM’s book.
