10 Things Only Star Wars Fans Know About Sabine Wren

Sabine Wren has been cast in the upcoming Ahsoka series, and Star Wars fans know the Mandalorian freedom fighter will have a big part to play.

The upcoming Ahsoka streaming series will see the return of Sabine Wren, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo playing the Mandalorian freedom fighter in their live-action debut. Sabine initially appeared in the animated Star Wars: Rebels series, and fans know that she has an important role to play not just in the history of the Rebellion, but the future of Mandalore.

Sabine Wren is at the center of the ongoing conflict over Mandalore, and as someone who has wielded the Darksaber in battle, it makes enormous sense that she would enter live-action as the franchise focuses on the ultimate fate of Mandalore and its people.

She Inspired The Rebel Insignia

The Rebel Alliance insignia is one of the most iconic symbols of Star Wars, and it all begins with Sabine Wren. Sabine is the most gifted artist fans have seen in the entire franchise, with a talent for graffiti that typically manifests in her armor. She often painted a phoenix-like symbol whose flaming wings clearly inspired the later Rebel design.

The Rebel insignia is a simplified version of the graffiti phoenix Sabine left all over the planet Lothal. It would become the standard as the Alliance consolidated, and appeared on helmets and uniforms throughout the movement.

A Former Imperial Cadet

Not only was Sabine Wren raised as a Mandalorian warrior, but she also trained as an Imperial cadet. Sabine honed many talents during this period, including her piloting and munitions skills. Sabine applied her artistry for weapons design during this era, standing out as a cadet at the Imperial Academy established on Mandalore.

Sabine was one of the most promising cadets to come out of the academy, but, not unlike Han Solo during his brief time in the Empire, she discovered that the Empire wasn’t the benevolent galactic power she believed it to be.

She Worked As A Bounty Hunter

After Sabine Wren left the Empire, she became a bounty hunter. She joined forces with Ketsu Onyo, a Star Wars bounty hunter who deserves more attention. The two former cadets worked together for some time, but then things took a dark turn. Ketsu turned on Sabine and left her for dead before joining the Black Sun criminal syndicate.

Sabine didn’t strike out on her own with the bounty hunting guild, but instead folded into the crew of the Ghost. This eventually led her to become one of the founding members of the nascent Rebellion.

A Member Of Clan Wren

Sabine’s significance in the Rebellion is hard to overstate, but she’s even more important within the complex power structures of Mandalore. She is a member of Clan Wren, with strong ties to House Vizsla, a powerful Mandalorian clan whose members include Pre Vizsla, the leader of the Death Watch in some of the best episodes of the Clone Wars.

Sabine’s mother is Ursa Wren, who during the Empire, sided with the Imperial collaborators, Clan Saxon. With Sabine’s help, Clan Wren turned on Saxon and the Empire to reclaim their world.

Played A Role In Wedge Antillies Joining The Rebellion

Sabine Wren used her experience as an Imperial cadet on a special mission that brought her into contact with another important figure in the Rebellion – Wedge Antilles. Wedge wasn’t an X-Wing pilot at the time, but an Imperial cadet training to be a pilot.

While Sabine was undercover as a pilot at Skystrike Academy, she acknowledged and encouraged Wedge’s misgivings about the Empire. This ultimately led him to defect along with his friend Hobbie. Both became heroes of the Rebellion.

She Wielded The Darksaber

When Sabine traveled to Dathomir with the Ghost crew, she discovered the Darksaber, the traditional weapon of the ruler of Mandalore and one of the most iconic weapons in Star Wars. She trained with the weapon with Jedi Kanan Jarrus, though she initially declined, doubting herself.

Kanan and her fellow Mandalorian Fenn Rau helped convince her to use it, hoping she would become the leader Mandalore needed. Sabine would learn to use the sword, the weapon Pre Vizsla once used against Obi-Wan Kenobi and Moff Gideon would use against Din Djarin.

She Took Part In The Mandalorian Civil War

Sabine was instrumental in exposing the harm the Empire was doing to Mandalore to her own family. In the process, she brought them into direct conflict with their ostensible allies, Clan Saxon. When Gar Saxon challenged Sabine for the Darksaber, she ultimately had to fight him for it with Kanan Jarrus’ lightsaber.

Sabine succeeded in killing Gar Saxon and claiming the Darksaber in combat, securing her ownership of it and the leadership of the entire Mandalorian people, as was the tradition on their planet.

She Gave The Darksaber To Bo-Katan

In a move that would have profound implications for events in The Mandalorian many years later, Sabine passed up the chance to become the ruler of Mandalore. She willingly gave the Darksaber to Bo-Katan Kryze, the sister of Duchess Satine, who then assumed the mantle.

This begs the question of why Bo-Katan wasn’t able to simply accept the weapon from Din Djarin decades later. It also isn’t clear how Bo-Katan lost it to Moff Gideon. One thing is certain; Sabine hasn’t seen the last of the Darksaber.

She Created A Terrible Super-Weapon

One of the most heartbreaking moments in Star Wars: Rebels is when Sabine realizes one of her inventions has been turned into a terrible weapon. While training as an Imperial cadet, Sabine applied her engineering and munitions skills to develop an Arc Pulse Generator, nicknamed “The Duchess.” This weapon was then used against Mandalore.

The use of her own invention to subjugate the Mandalorians was too much for Sabine, who bears enormous guilt for the fall of her proud people to the Empire. The fall of Mandalore would have lasting impacts for decades.

She Joined Ahsoka To Find Ezra Bridger

At the end of Star Wars: Rebels, the series jumps ahead in time a few years, and fans see an older and wiser Sabine prepare to leave with Ahsoka Tano to find Ezra Bridger. This was clearly pointing toward the eventual live-action Ahsoka series and Ahsoka’s interest in the whereabouts of Grand Admiral Thrawn in The Mandalorian.

Sabine’s role in the streaming series will likely be tied to the search for Ezra and Thrawn, but given her deep connection to Mandalore and the Darksaber, is unlikely to end there. It seems probable that she will appear in other related series as well.
