For years and years, the magical brand of Disney has been making TV shows, films, theme parks, toys, games and other products that entertain fans of all ages, but they are best known for their princess movies; these bright, bold, and beautiful young ladies all have once upon a times that share some similar elements.

Yes, every Disney princess is unique, with varying traits and quirks, but these romantic tales usually feature the same sort of plots, copycats of supporting characters, and those famous happy endings. It’s a fine line between comforting familiarity and tired cliché.

10 There Is A Tragic Backstory

Despite the fact that fairy tales and fables are usually aimed at younger audiences, the main characters often have tragic backstories, and this is very true when it comes to Disney princesses.

Many of them have lost parents, some of them are trapped— either in the role of a housekeeper or in tall towers— and/or cursed, leaving them to feel as if their dreams are impossible and that they can’t be their true selves.

9 A Villain Makes Everything Worse

Things are already not ideal for most Disney princesses, and then a Disney villain shows up and makes everything worse. These antagonists seem to exist to make princesses’ lives miserable, if not wanting to end their lives— and the lives of those around them— completely in some cases.

The bad guys and bad gals can be horrible, but like the tragic backstory, they help in making the main characters even stronger and more inspiring. After all, you need conflict to drive a story.

8 There Is A Goofy Sidekick

Disney movies are not complete without a goofy sidekick or two, and they are usually animals— Cinderella has mice; Ariel has Flounder and Sebastian; and Pocahontas has Meeko and Flit.

These pals provide comedic relief, but they are also extremely helpful, as they lend a hand (or paw or fin), provide guidance, and are always up for a good time, even if they are initially resistant to it.

7 The Princess Sings At Least One Pretty, Inspirational Song

Something else seen in these films would be catchy soundtracks, and a Disney princess has to sing at least one big showstopping song. She may sing of romance, as Snow White is known for “Some Day My Prince Will Come” and Aurora, for “Once Upon a Dream.” Or she may sing a tune full of lyrics about chasing after goals and looking inward, as Mulan has “Reflection”, Moana has “How Far I’ll Go”, and Ariel has “Part of Your World.”

6 She Meets A Charming Man

A vital component is the love story portion, the beautiful princess has to be romanced by a charming man. Usually he is a prince or is soon to become one, and its in marrying him that the princess of the film actually becomes the princess.

At times, though, these males leads are just normal men, such as Aladdin and Flynn Ryder, who both got lucky and fell for royalty. It’s a nice subverting of the original trope, but it’s still very much a trope of its own.

5 A Conflict Gets In Their Way

As mentioned, as soon as the story starts, there is some sort of problem, and villains complicate matters further. As the story progresses, there is one really big conflict around which the entire movie revolves— one that makes it seem like a happy ending would never be possible.

Belle getting trapped in the Beast’s castle even after saving her father, and Ursula turning into Vanessa then swooping in and trying to steal Eric away, are just two examples.

4 Everyone Comes Together To Help The Princess

Even if a Disney princess is an orphan or is cursed, she is a beautiful and friendly character who is surrounded by loved ones. Therefore, whenever a problem does arise, everyone seems willing to pitch in to help her out, no matter what.

From the furry friends and the handsome princes to those she has met along the way and impressed, it is a joint effort, working towards that same end goal.

3 There Is A Happily Ever After

Though audiences are made to think otherwise, and the movies do their best to paint the situations as truly hopeless, the villain always loses, the princess is always saved, and everything always goes back to normal and/or some type of new, better “normal” is created. This looks different in every film, as it may involve breaking a curse or trying on a shoe or receiving a kiss, but it is definitely a joyous moment all around and one that will inevitably occur.

2 She Ends Up With Her One True Love

A big part of that happily ever after for almost every Disney princess is getting the guy. It may have seemed implausible just before the movie’s big climax, but it is what the princess wants, so it is what the princess gets.

Furthermore, the two main characters may have only just met, yet they always kiss, get married and/or have children together, and audiences are too busy cheering and happy-crying to question how quickly everything has progressed.

1 A Lesson Is Learned By All

The animal sidekicks, the scary climax, and the Prince Charming elements are well-known ones that assist in completing these tales. However, there is one more thing all Disney princesses must do before the credits role: Help teach audiences some kind of life lesson.

Tiana teaches people to never stop believing. Merida teaches about the importance of bravery. Pocahontas reminds us to respect and appreciate nature. Belle extols the virtues of reading. And so on. Yes, there may be shared similarities in all, but each of these stars pass on some beautiful and brilliant truths.
