10 Things We Want To See In The New Downton Abbey Movie

Downton Abbey will be returning to the big screen next year, with Downton Abbey: A New Era – a film that promises to provide all the usual drama, romance, and incredible costuming of the original series and first movie. Little is known about the sequel so far, beyond the release date (March 2022, pushed back from December 2021) and the return of the original cast.

Of course, the lack of plot detail hasn’t stopped fans speculating about what’s next in store for the Crawleys and the servants at Downton Abbey, especially given where the 2019 film left off. It’s likely that the new film will take place at some point in the 1930s, and that of course, it will follow the next stage in the life of the Downton Abbey regulars.

10 At Least One Wedding

Weddings are important affairs in the world of Downton Abbey, both upstairs and downstairs, and the new movie may well have one of each! In the servant’s quarters, Daisy may tie the knot with Andy, having finally got past her fears about the marriage and started to plan. In the family upstairs, fans are speculating on if Tom and Lucy may be planning a wedding themselves. Either wedding would be a wonderful part of the movie, but neither are guaranteed. The film may time jump past Daisy’s wedding and begin with her a married woman, and Tom and Lucy are not a sure thing.

9 A New Monarch

Depending on when the film takes place and how long a time period it spans, fans may see the declining health of King George V, who passed in 1936, and his replacement on the throne. This ties in nicely with the first film, which focuses on a visit by the King to Downton, and creates the opportunity to cover the scandalous story of King Edward VIII, who was monarch for less than a year, abdicating the throne to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. This would be a story that fits extremely well with the themes of Downton Abbey, class, social expectations and marriage, and more, but it would mean a significant time jump between films, from 1927 to 1936.

8 A Trip To Europe

10 Things We Want To See In The New Downton Abbey Movie

Some of the footage from the new movie that was previewed at CinemaCon suggests that the family will be taking a trip to Europe this time, which would provide an interesting change for the family. Thus far, almost all of Downton Abbey has taken place in the UK, and it’s a quintessentially English series.

While there have been a few scenes elsewhere (starting with World War 1), it would be a huge change for the film to go abroad. This could definitely provide more scope and keep the series fresh, but it may also mean that some of the charm is lost – the grand house and servants wouldn’t be coming with them, which would be a true loss.

7 How The Great Depression Impacts Downton

10 Things We Want To See In The New Downton Abbey Movie

One of the biggest historical events of the ’30s was, of course, the Great Depression, and it would be fitting for the movie to cover the impacts of this crisis in the UK. As money and politics have been a central part of the show from the start, it would make sense, and this fits with the time period without requiring the movie to make a big jump. A lot of the focus of Downton Abbey has remained on how it changes with the times, and the shift away from the traditional aristocracy – the Depression would fit into this perfectly.

6 Lady Edith’s Baby…

Lady Edith is one of the saddest characters on Downton Abbey, but she has one of the happiest endings, finding love and money – and discovering that she is pregnant again. Presumably, her baby will feature in the new movie, although the time jump will affect how this plays out. With a smaller time jump, she may be seen with a newborn, but a bigger jump would allow for an older child, and the ability to see a new generation start to form their own alliances – especially between Edith’s legitimate and illegitimate children, and Edith and Mary’s children together.

5 …And Edith Back At Work

Another key part of Edith’s story was her becoming a working woman, and taking over the magazine – something that she loved, and that really saw her grow as a character.

In the first film, she expressed that she missed being at work, now that her position and title take up her time. With the title of ‘A New Era’, it seems fitting that Edith would be the one to lead the charge into it, and find a new way to work.

4 More Diversity

10 Things We Want To See In The New Downton Abbey Movie

Downton Abbey has been criticized for a lack of diversity, with essentially only one Black character over the course of the series – a jazz musician who has a small part to play in the larger story. While some may argue that the aristocracy would have been historically very white, and that in a grand house in Yorkshire, the servants would likely be predominantly white too, it would still be good to see some more diversity in the characters – and there are many ways to bring this into the show in a way that wouldn’t sacrifice any level of historical accuracy.

3 Thomas And The Gay Community In The 1930s

10 Things We Want To See In The New Downton Abbey Movie

Thomas has had an incredible redemption arc over the course of the series and the first film, and a large part of his story revolves around his life as a gay man at a time when he had to keep his sexual orientation a secret. Early on, he was seen having a few clandestine relationships, but struggling to find happiness – or any kind of empathy and community. Later, he discovered the existence of a gay bar, and a way to spend at least an evening being open about himself, before it was raided. Seeing a deeper exploration of the LGBTQ+ community and gay culture at this point in time, if handled well, would be an incredible addition to the film.

2 Some Brand New Characters

There will be some new faces joining the cast, and Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West have been confirmed. Their characters have not been revealed at this point, and given the scope of Downton Abbey, they could be playing absolutely anyone, so fans are left to speculate about how they will fit in. However, it is always useful to add some new characters, shift the dynamic a little bit, create some new intrigue, and expand the world a little further. After all, the first season of the show was centered on how someone new can change everything – in this case, Matthew Crawley.

1 The Return Of Fan Favorites

Alongside new characters, fans are hoping that they may see some old favorites who left the show – obviously many of the characters who are no longer part of the series have been killed off, but others are not, and deserve more screen time. Gwen, the house maid turned secretary who then married a gentleman. She has returned to Downton (in season 6) but was not in the movie, and fans would love to see where she is now. Similarly, Rose, the mischievous cousin, would be a phenomenal return for the new sequel.
