From the cast to the story, what would fans most like to see from a fourth installment of the iconic Back to the Future franchise?

True Back to the Future fans come in many varieties. Some want the franchise to stay exactly as it is, in perfection. Others desperately want the filmmakers to put together a new treasure. Then there are those who see potential in a fourth sequel but just aren’t sure how it would pan out.
For all the fans who wish every day for Back to the Future Part IV, or for those who are on the fence about it, here are ten things that the new movie must have in order to live up to its stellar lineage.
10 Amazing New Destination
Time travel is cool and all, but a new Back to the Future movie should be focused on a sought-after location. The third movie was the first to do this with a trip back to the Old West. Who knows where a fourth film could go?
A space trek might be a little far-fetched, but the story could take place anywhere in the world–Paris, New York, New Zealand, Hawaii… the possibilities are endless.
9 More Than One Stop
The new BTTF film would do well to make more than one stop on its ride. The second movie is thrilling for many reasons, one of them being its fast-paced voyages to the future, the past (again), and an alternate universe of the present. Some fans will expect Marty McFly to traverse through as much of the time continuum as possible.
8 Original Cast
Speaking of Marty McFly, no one will even care about the film if the original cast is not involved. When they spoke with Josh Gad for a special virtual reunion, the cast members were all in good spirits. Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Mary Steenburgen and several others filled the screen to reminisce about their time on set of the trilogy. There is only one problem–Crispin Glover would never reprise his role as George McFly. He and writer/producer Bob Gale have long been in a feud over issues from the past.
7 Same Writers
Drama aside, the two “Bobs” must write the new screenplay. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale are simply the only individuals for the job, unless some random person out there truly has a better idea. This could be challenging–both men are in agreement that if they’d had a good enough idea, the movie would have been made already. Maybe they’ll have an epiphany–and a change of heart.
6 Gripping Story
There are some high standards for any BTTF storyline. Some viewers even look upon the two existing sequels with disdain. For a lot of fans, nothing can ever top the first movie. A fourth sequel could certainly live up to the franchise name, though. Fans want to experience a smart, gripping adventure, and it would be great if the whole thing isn’t too predictable.
5 Romance
While they’re at it, the writers can get back to the romance, too. How does everything really turn out years later for Marty and Jennifer? Are Doc and Clara living happily ever after down the road?
Maybe one of Marty’s kids has a juicy love life. The specifics don’t necessarily matter as long as the romantic thread from the first three installments isn’t dropped.
4 New Technology
It’s safe to say that the real 2015 was a little different from 1985’s imagining of 2015. Viewers want to see what technological concoctions exist in whatever year the new film takes place. If there’s a much-anticipated trip to the new future, fans want to see what kinds of phones, cars, computers, sneakers, and hover-boards exist in that realm. All it takes is a little imagination to make the mechanics of it all seem interesting.
3 ’80s Nostalgia
BTTF Part II hit the nail on the head with fictional 2015’s emphasis on nostalgia. When Marty enters that 80s cafe, a philosophical viewer gets chills thinking about the verisimilitude of the scene. From real-life 2015 to 2020, nostalgia for previous decades has been at an all-time high, especially for the 1980s, ’90s, and now, early 2000s. There had better be some type of throwback coffee shop or something.
2 Homage To Previous Movies
No one wants to watch a new Back to the Future film if it doesn’t acknowledge its incredible ancestry. If the movie doesn’t somehow go back to specific scenes from the first three movies, it can at least recognize the greatness of yesteryear. Perhaps Marty could read his kids a story about his time-traveling tales and suddenly find himself transported somewhere again with Doc. Or maybe Biff will stir up some trouble in his old age and set things in motion.
1 Does Its Own Thing
Obviously, it is critical that the new movie pay homage to the old ones. At the same time, a fourth feature still needs to tell a new story and do its own thing. Some fans would be content with a mere reunion special of sorts, but YouTube exists for that. Many viewers would much rather have a true time travel movie with a clear mission and an engaging arc. The cast can certainly pull that off.
