10 Things We Would Want To See In A Cars 4 Movie

If the Disney/Pixar Cars franchise continues, which elements and characters should the fourth film include – and how should it connect?

It was in 2006 when the first Cars movie was released under Pixar becoming an instant hit that’s still widely regarded as one of the best animated films ever. Starring Owen Wilson as the race car Lightning McQueen, Cars takes place in a word inhabited by anthropomorphic cars. On his journey to become the fastest car alive, McQueen learns several life lessons. Its sequels, however, have had a tumultuous ride as the second installment threw a spy conspiracy subplot in the mix, receiving negative reviews. Then, the recent Cars 3 got back on a strong footing but failed to earn big at the box office.

After Toy Story 4, Disney (which acquired Pixar soon after the first film) made it clear that sequels aren’t the studio’s first priority as of now. And yet, some hint at the possibility of a fourth Cars film to be made in the future. If it indeed gets made, then fans would have a few things to look forward to.

10 A Leading Role For Cruz Ramirez

Cruz Ramirez (voiced by Cristela Alonzo) becomes Lightning McQueen’s spiritual successor by the end of the third film, indicating that Lightning McQueen is probably going to sit back from now on and serve as her mentor (just like Doc Hudson mentored him).

Instead, Ramirez’s youthful passion would change the direction Cars 4 takes. It would be amusing to see how she turns out to be as a racer, the struggles she faces, her love interests, and so on.

9 More Grounded Approach

The first film starts and ends with melodramatic races but the crux of Cars is McQueen’s realization that sometimes life’s race needs to be experienced slowly, as his time at Radiator Springs helps him master patience and perseverance doing mundane tasks and interacting with cars from various backgrounds.

In comparison, an action-based approach was followed in the sophomore film and the third chapter heavily emphasized on McQueen’s Rocky Balboa-like comeback in the world of professional racing. To break the adrenaline-driven monotony, Cars 4 should have a more laid back, grounded approach, rather than solely focusing on the world of racing and foreign competitors.

8 Connection With Planes

A spin-off from the Cars universe that both critics and audiences seem to have forgotten is the film Planes and its sequel Planes: Fire And Rescue. Set in a world of talking airplanes, Planes did have some potential to be an entertaining (if not perfect) film but this time, the formula didn’t work.

It would still be amusing if some characters from the Planes series could make cameo appearances in Cars explicitly tying their shared universe together.

7 Lightning McQueen’s Supporting Act

If Cruz Ramirez takes center stage in the new Cars film, it would only make sense for Lightning McQueen to undergo a mature makeover of a seasoned veteran.

Viewers usually used to see the red racing car as a cocky, goofy automobile. But seeing him as an experienced race car and a parent-like figure to Ramirez would be an exciting new development in the mythos of Cars.

6 Disney Easter Eggs

Every Disney and Pixar film has had the tendency to connect each film together through meta-Easter Eggs (some of which are in the background or appear for a split-second). The Cars trilogy, too, includes recurring elements like a Pizza Planet truck (which first appeared in Toy Story) and nods to classic Pixar films like The Incredibles, the parodies of which are played at the Radiator Springs Drive-In Theatre.

Hence, it would only make sense for Cars 4 to have its own share of Disney-related Easter Eggs. Considering the fact that even Marvel and Star Wars are owned by Disney, there are endless possibilities for really random connections and references.

5 More Of The Usual Mater Humor

Mater, the naive, rusty, buck-toothed tow truck is arguably the most favorite Cars character for many viewers. This explains how he almost became the hero in Cars 2 and was even involved in his own series of short films.

With some fine voice acting by Larry The Cable Guy, Cars 4 would feature a much older, rustier Mater. What kind of misadventures would he put himself in this time? That’ll be seen if he hopefully gets enough screentime. However, he shouldn’t be under the spotlight all the time as too much of Mater’s antics can be overkill too. Cars 2 bears testimony to this.

4 More Of Other Vehicles

Why should the franchise just stop at cars? Tractors, trucks, buses, and many other four-wheelers have been featured as minor characters in the movies but it would be interesting for the focus to shift on them more often.

Maybe, each type of vehicle has its own different set of issues as compared to the titular cars. This can be touched upon in the fourth film. After all, time and again, Disney’s animated ventures have shown that they add heavy, heartfelt emotions to even inanimate objects.

3 A Straight-To-Home Release

Despite a darker tone and more character development, Cars 3 failed to make a mark with its theatrical release. Cars 4 too might be a risky venture if it’s geared for a release on the big screen as there are chances that many fans might not be hyped enough for the fourth installment in this decade-old franchise.

Disney can play it safe this time by making Cars 4 available on its streaming service Disney+. Anyway, with new reboots and shows planned for the near future, the platform is set to increase its reach and exposure.

2 Tesla Easter Egg

The automobile industry has surely taken new strides ever since the first film released. A significant example would be the electric vehicle company Tesla Inc. Tesla’s models run on clean energy and some of them are even equipped with an autopilot feature.

Cars 4 should feature a similar high-efficiency vehicle that can be a satirical allegory to Tesla or similar automobile alternatives, echoing the future of newer and more advanced cars.

1 More Short Films Like LOU

Some of Pixar’s classic films open with a few memorable shorts (many of which eventually get nominated for an Academy Award). Cars 3 similarly opens with a 6-minute film called LOU. This can be seen as a darker version of Toy Story as the titular character is a monstrosity that’s made of various toys that are in an elementary school’s lost and found box. When Lou finds out a bully has been stealing toys in the school, it decides to teach the boy a lesson in its own way.

LOU was innovative, quirky while having the same amount of warmth that its production studio is renowned for. Cars 4 can similarly feature an unconventional and amusing short film.
