10 Things You Didnt Know About Strike The Blood

A simple fact of life in the anime community is that nobody can know all of the anime ever produced, no matter how hard someone tries. Case in point, Strike the Blood – a well-known anime in Japan that almost nobody outside the country is too familiar with.

Strike the Blood’s relative obscurity elsewhere doesn’t mean that it’s bad, but more that it just got buried under more impressionable titles and the runaway hits of its time. It’s not exactly the most groundbreaking title out there, but Strike the Blood is worth checking out for curiosity’s sake.

10 The Anime Is Still Ongoing

10 Things You Didnt Know About Strike The Blood

Strike the Blood is one of those anime that flew under people’s radars, which is why its status as a long-runner may surprise some. While most of the anime community didn’t pay it much mind, the anime chugged along silently and has entertaining its fans since 2013. To date, Strike the Blood has four seasons and more than 50 episodes.

As of this writing, a fifth Strike the Blood season has yet to be confirmed. That said, it wouldn’t be surprising if the series were renewed shortly after the current season ends in June 2021. Based on its pace and writing, a fifth season would be perfect to wrap things up. That said, the possibility of it being extended yet again with more original material is still there.

9 It Started Out As A Light Novel Series

10 Things You Didnt Know About Strike The Blood

Strike the Blood tells the story of an ordinary high school boy who’s not just the linchpin of a supernatural/sci-fi conflict, but the center of an unwanted harem. Additionally, his main love interest is as tsundere as can be.

If it weren’t obvious enough, Strike the Blood started life as a light novel series. First published in 2011 through Dengeki Bunko, Strike the Blood saw success in this medium before exploding into a multi-media franchise in due time. It soon expanded into a manga version, which was published in Dengeki Daioh starting in 2012.

8 The Light Novels Are Already Finished

Just because the anime won’t be ending any time soon doesn’t mean that the story is actually still incomplete. In fact, the original light novel series concluded just last year, after enjoying almost a decade’s worth of success and popularity. Strike the Blood finally came to a close with its 22nd volume titled Return of the Dawn.

Similarly, the light novels’ manga adaptation had a finite run, though it was shorter than the source material. The manga concluded in 2016, with a total of 53 chapters collected in 10 volumes. Impatient fans who don’t mind spoilers should check out either the light novels or the manga.

7 It’s Doing Really Well In DVD Sales

10 Things You Didnt Know About Strike The Blood

Strike the Blood may not be a household name anywhere in the West, but it’s a decent hit in Japan. Ever since its beginning in 2013, the anime sold DVDs while also making it to the weekly best-selling charts. Each DVD volume sold well, with the Blu-Ray editions selling as much a 4,000 per week. In fact, Strike the Blood III’s second volume sold over 7,000 units.

These figures may not seem like much but in Japan, it’s a record-breaker. Generally speaking, the local market for videos and physical media is pretty small. Anime studios don’t really prioritize video sales, and any profit made from DVDs is just a nice bonus. Strike the Blood consistently selling around 1,000 DVDs per week is already a big deal for studios Connect and Silver Link.

6 Seasons 2 To 4 Are OVAs

10 Things You Didnt Know About Strike The Blood

The first Strike the Blood anime from 2013 didn’t really blaze trails, but it garnered enough fan support and sales that it launched an entire franchise. However, for reasons only the publishers know, the anime shifted its format to that of an Original Video Animation (OVA) for Strike the Blood II onwards. This wasn’t a demotion, since it actually did the anime a lot of good.

As an OVA, anime can push the envelope further than a more mainstream anime could. Strike the Blood took advantage of this leeway, ramping up the action and fanservice for everything after the debut season. But even if the OVAs actually earned more sales and ratings than the anime, some viewers didn’t like how it still felt like it stagnated, even with fewer restrictions.

5 There Are Some Anime-Original Arcs

10 Things You Didnt Know About Strike The Blood

For the most part, Strike the Blood has been accurate to its source material, with the occasional adaptation change here and there. Two of the few major divergences include the two-part Empire of the Dawn storyline from the original anime and the OVA special Disappearing Holy Lance, both of which are anime-only narratives.

The Empire of the Dawn time travel arc (above) showed a glimpse of the setting’s future while not drastically changing the status quo, while Disappearing Holy Lance boasts the distinction of being a completely new arc not based on anything from the source material. In contrast, Empire of the Dawn was more of a side-story than a full-fledged arc.

4 Yukina Represented The Anime In A Fighting Game

As its title implies, Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax is a fighting game and celebration of the imprint’s most famous works. The fighting roster includes big names like Kirito (Sword Art Online), Mikoto Misaka (A Certain Scientific Railgun), Taiga Aisaka (Toradora!), and more. Popular secondary characters like Boogiepop and Celty Sturluson (Durarara!!) appear as support NPCs.

Representing Strike the Blood was Yukina Himeragi, the story’s most prominent woman and Kojo Akatsuki’s main love interest. Despite being the main character, Kojo only appears as a supporting character in Dengeki Bunko’s 20th-anniversary celebration. The game was released in 2014 for the PlayStation 3 and 4.

3 It’s More Of A Guilty Pleasure Than A Smash Hit

Based on its reviews from IMDb and MyAnimeList, Strike the Blood isn’t exactly raved about. On both sites, the anime scored a consistent 7.0, with the inaugural season going as high as 7.14 on MAL. However, user comments and anime forums paint a different picture.

Many viewers consider Strike the Blood generic at best, as it does literally everything a fantasy harem anime set in a high school would. Commenters derided it for being so formulaic that it’s unoriginal, while others laughed at how paper-thin the plot was – especially whenever it forced fanservice or romance. That said, almost everyone on both websites agreed that Strike the Blood is still fun and well animated, which explains its scores and status as a guilty pleasure.

2 It Was Banned In China

10 Things You Didnt Know About Strike The Blood

In 2015, Strike the Blood was banned by the Chinese Ministry of Culture. The official reasoning states that the story had “scenes of violence, pornography, terrorism, and crimes against public morality.” Given Strike the Blood’s love of fanservice and its overt themes of youth rebellion against authority, this is anything but surprising.

Titles like Highschool of the Dead, Inferno Cop, and most notably Attack on Titan were banned for similar reasons. A total of 38 titles were blacklisted by the ministry, which is notorious for banning just about any foreign media. Any store and/or website was put under immediate investigation if they were caught selling related merchandise or streaming these anime.

1 It Was Created By One Of Metal Gear Survive’s Writers

There’s a small debate among fans about which light novel and/or anime truly defines Gakuto Mikumo: either it’s the nostalgic Asura Cryin’, or the long-running Strike the Blood. Each title has its fair share of points, but they’re both overshadowed by Mikumo’s other work that’s not as acclaimed in any capacity. This, of course, is the notorious game Metal Gear Survive.

Along with three other writers, Mikumo (who also penned Portable Ops) wrote Metal Gear Survive, the first Metal Gear Solid game made after franchise mastermind Hideo Kojima was controversially fired from Konami. The game was critically eviscerated upon release, with many calling it one of the worst of its year regardless of its connection (or lack thereof) to Solid Snake’s franchise.
