It has become a common trend for viewers of animated kids’ shows to create disturbing fan theories that see well-loved cartoons as dark tales of loss and horror. From murderous pirates to mental illness, some of these grim theories quickly spread across the internet and convince cartoon fans that their favorite shows are much darker than they remember.

A popular theory that has been making the rounds on Reddit claims that all of the events of Rugrats took place in Angelica Pickles’ mind. It speculates that Tommy, Chuckie and the twins, Phil and Lil, don’t exist in the real world and were created by Angelica as a coping mechanism due to bad parenting.

The theory suggests that Angelica is able to talk to and understand the babies because they don’t really exist. Her career-driven mother had very little time to give her attention, and as a result she dreamed up a group of toddlers that she could boss around. Angelica’s mean attitude was her way of acting out due to neglect, and she took her anger out on the toddlers because she was older and had power over them.

Why Would Angelica Create Imaginary Children in Rugrats?

The theory takes a dark turn by positing that all of the children were alive once but died early in their lives. It suggests that Tommy Pickles died shortly after birth, and his father Stu fell into a depressive state. Stu then spent most of his time in his basement creating toys for his son that would never get to play with them.

Although Chuckie Finster’s mom was said to have died because of a terminal illness, the theory states that she and Chuckie were both killed in a car crash. This explains Chas Finster’s erratic and nervous behavior as he was traumatized by the accident. Chuckie’s own fearful disposition was a reflection of his father as Angelica had no other reference for the type of person Chuckie would be growing up.

Phil and Lil DeVille, on the other hand, were never born at all. Angelica knew that Betty DeVille was pregnant but that she had lost the baby, either during pregnancy or childbirth. Since Angelica never knew the sex of the baby, she imagined it as both a girl and a boy. Other versions of the theory even claim that Betty aborted her child, but it’s unlikely that Angelica would have this type of information and it would have happened too early in the pregnancy for Betty to be showing already.

Could this Rugrats Theory Be True?

As horrifying as this theory may be, it could be somewhat possible. Angelica was an only child whose parents were too busy with their careers to care for her. Rather than showing her affection, they showered her with gifts and boosted her confidence so that she would be prepared for success in the business world someday. The way that they raised Angelica made her unkind, which resulted in her struggling to make or maintain friendships. It’s very possible that through her loneliness she felt the need to invent other children that could spend time with her to fill the void left by her parents.

There are some flaws that poke holes in the theory, though. Most significantly, the children are visible to the adults around them and they regularly interact with each other — even when Angelica isn’t present. Tommy’s neighbor Susie was also able to interact with the children, so they can’t have existed solely inside Angelica’s head. Some fans have speculated that this was because Susie entertained the idea of Angelica having imaginary friends, which is not that uncommon for many children. The theory also provides no explanation for the existence of Tommy’s younger brother Dil or Chuckie’s stepsister Kimi, who was introduced in Rugrats in Paris: The Movie.
