Sometimes, when actors are on long-running television shows, their lives change through the years of starring on the series’ episodes. Whether that be signs of aging, marriages, or more noticeably, pregnancies.

The production team can portray an actor’s pregnancy differently. They may ask the actor to hide the pregnancy or create a getaway for the character while they’re prominently pregnant. For example, Zooey Deschanel’s character hid her pregnancy by having her complete jury duty for New Girl. Although, writers may have decided to include the pregnancy New Girl as plot development for the actor’s character.

10 Jenna Fischer Was Pregnant With Her First Child During The Office

Jenna Fischer and her husband, Lee Kirk, welcomed their first child together in 2011, which coincided with Pam’s second pregnancy in The Office. Pam and Jim Halpert already welcomed their first child, Cece, during The Office’s sixth season. Then Pam became pregnant again in season eight with their son, Philip.

This isn’t the first time an actor has been pregnant during The Office. The writers decided to hide Angela Kinsey’s pregnancy by placing various objects in front of her belly during the fourth season. This is before her character, also named Angela, became pregnant alongside Pam during the eighth season.

Phoebe Buffay’s pregnancy became a major plot point during the fourth season of Friends. Phoebe decides to become the surrogate for Frank Jr., her half-brother, and his wife Alice. Phoebe later gives birth to triplets named Frank Jr. Jr., Leslie, and Chandler. Although not pregnant with three babies, Lisa Kudrow, who plays Phoebe on Friends, was actually pregnant at the time. Kudrow welcomed her first child Julian, with her husband, Michel Stern, in 1998. Kudrow states the cast supported her pregnancy, and even included her baby in the pre-huddles before the show.

One of the earliest inclusions of a real-life pregnancy is with Lucille Ball on the classic sitcom I Love Lucy. The circumstances were a little different back then, since they banned the word “pregnant” from being said during I Love Lucy. Ball’s first pregnancy during I Love Lucy’s first season was hidden, but her second pregnancy during the second season was written into the storyline.

It was particularly uncommon for pregnant actors to be shown on television in the 1950s, and the writers only allowed synonyms for “pregnant” to be used during episodes. Surprisingly, Ball’s caesarean section was scheduled the same day her character gave birth on I Love Lucy.

Chandra Wilson has been a cast member of Grey’s Anatomy for nearly two decades now as Dr. Miranda Bailey. Wilson was pregnant with her third child, Michael, during the filming of Grey’s Anatomy’s second season. The writers decided to include Wilson’s pregnancy as Bailey’s first child, William George Bailey “Tuck” Jones, with her now ex-husband, Tucker Jones.

Grey’s Anatomy fans will remember the iconic moment of Bailey’s birth scene during a bomb threat at Seattle Grace Hospital. George O’Malley assists her in delivering the child, for which she names the baby after.

Vanessa Morgan is best known for her role as Toni Topaz in CW’s Riverdale since 2017. Morgan gave birth to a son, named River, this year with Chicago White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech, who she recently split up with. The writers decided to write the pregnancy into the plot, which makes another storyline in Riverdale that just doesn’t make sense.

It’s a mystery to Riverdale fans as to who is the father of Toni’s baby. The fact that Toni was previously dating cheerleading it-girl Cheryl Blossom just adds to their cluelessness.

Melissa Fumero got her acting beginnings playing Adriana on the soap opera One Life To Live. That is where she met her current husband, David Fumero, who is also the father of their two sons, Enzo and Axel. Fumero stars as Amy Santiago on the NBC sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Fumero’s first pregnancy, hidden during the third season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, ironically comes in handy during the scene where Amy pretends to be pregnant. Fumero’s second pregnancy is written into Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as Amy’s child with Jake Peralta is born during the seventh season.

4 Ginnifer Goodwin Married Her Once Upon A Time Co-Star

Ginnifer Goodwin is best recognized for her portrayal of Snow White in the ABC Fantasy series Once Upon A Time. She stars alongside her real-life husband, Josh Dallas, who plays Prince Charming. Goodwin was pregnant twice during Once Upon A Time’s run, once during 2014, and again in 2016.

Her first pregnancy was written into the storyline as the second child of Prince Charming and Snow White. This isn’t the only time writers wrote in a pregnancy for the show, as Emilie de Ravin, who plays Belle, was also expecting.

3 Emily Deschanel Was Pregnant Twice On Bones

Emily Deschanel stars Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan in the Fox crime series Bones for twelve years. Considering twelve years is a long time, it’s no surprise Deschanel would go through major life events. She married It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star, David Hornsby, in 2010 and they currently have two children together.

Both of Deschanel’s pregnancies were written into Bones, and her love interest Seeley Booth, played by David Boreanaz, is the father of the children. The pregnancy storylines were ultimately faced by mixed reviews from fans.

2 Chelsea Peretti Is Married To Jordan Peele

Chelsea Peretti is best known for her role as Gina Linetti in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as well as writing for shows like Saturday Night Live and Parks & Recreation. Peretti exited Brooklyn Nine-Nine in 2018 after five years on the show, but made a guest appearance in the episode Return Of The King in 2019.

1 Molly Ringwald’s Character Is Pregnant Like Her On-Screen Daughter

Molly Ringwald is best known for her roles in teen films in the 1980s by acclaimed director John Hughes. Some of her notable film appearances include roles in The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. Ringwald stars in the ABC Family sitcom Secret Life Of An American Teenager, which addresses the issue of teen pregnancy. Shailene Woodley plays her teenage on-screen daughter, whose character is expecting.

At the same time, Ringwald is pregnant with twins with Greek-American writer Panio Gianopoulos. The writers wrote Ringwald’s pregnancy into Secret Life Of An American Teenager, rather than hiding it.
