10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

The Nintendo Switch recently turned 3 years old. Nintendo’s hybrid console has proven to be a huge success, being extensively able to compete against Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One, in spite of the fact that it is not as powerful as its competitors.

Entering its 4th year, the Switch’s popularity comes from its excellent first-party titles and its significant support of third party games and ports. However, there are games that did not gain the attention they deserved when they came out and deserve a second look on the Switch.

10 Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

Azure Striker Gunvolt is a side-scrolling platformer made by the developers of the Mega Man games. The game fell under the radar due to the popularity of Mega Man games. Nevertheless, this is a quality game indeed. The story is a bit confusing, but Gunvolt balances that with its gameplay.

While it is obvious that it draws inspiration from Mega Man, Gunvolt feels and plays completely different than Capcom’s little robot. Everything is fast-paced and marking enemies with Gunvolt’s blaster to then finish them with his lightning ability never bores. The Switch package contains the two Gunvolt games combined with all of their DLC.

9 Super Bomberman R

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

Super Bomberman R is the latest game of the series, which served as one of the launch titles for the Nintendo Switch. It was overlooked by most people due to the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the launch title almost everyone bought with the system.

The game follows the same formula of the Bomberman games and Konami tried its best to support the game after its release with many update improvements and free DLC. It is definitely one of the best multiplayer experiences on the console, being able to play with up to 8 players both offline and online.

8 Kirby: Star Allies

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

As the newest core Kirby game in the series, Star Allies is a fun and chilling platformer. Gameplay follows the usual mechanics from the Kirby games with the addition of new powers and the ability to turn up to three of your enemies into your allies in order to fight beside you. In spite of the fact that the game is tremendously easy and the Kirby formula is starting to feel a bit out of date, it is far from a bad game. There is a lot of charm here to enjoy playing solo or co-op.

7 Arms

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

Nintendo’s newest IP for a fighting game got overlooked by many Nintendo fans for no reason. The game is visually astonishing, being one of the best looking games on the system. There is a large roster of characters and arms to choose from since Nintendo kept supporting the game with a lot of free additional content.

Single-player doesn’t offer much after you finish the story mode, but online and local battles will keep you occupied for many hours. With regard to gameplay, it feels pretty satisfying; playing either with proper controllers or motion controls, Arms offers a pleasing fighting experience on the Switch.

6 Batman: The Telltale Series

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

Telltale Games is acknowledged for its point-and-click games and released an episodic game based on Bruce Wayne’s early years as Batman. Just like with other Telltale games, each choice and action you make affects the plot in a different way, meaning that you can replay the game by making different decisions next time.

As always, the Switch version has a bit lower frame rate from other versions and graphics have been toned down, giving environments and character models a darker look. Still, the game looks suitably nice in both TV and the Switch’s screen, offering a dark story with decent voice acting and an immersive atmosphere.

5 Pokken Tournament DX

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

Another fighting game for the Switch, Pokken Tournament DX is similar to Tekken games but with Pokémon instead. It was initially a Wii U game which was also released for the arcade. The gameplay is not as demanding as Mortal Kombat or Tekken games, meaning that it can be enjoyed by both casual and veteran players of fighting games.

Although the deluxe version added the fighters of the arcade version, the roster is not as large as it should be, taking into account the enormous number of Pokémon existing. On the other hand, the current fighting roster is enough to create immersive battles and enjoy one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises in a different way.

4 Yooka-Laylee

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

With the release and success of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, people started to forget the initial game in the franchise. While the Impossible Lair is similar to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Yooka-Laylee serves as a tribute and spiritual successor to the Banjo-Kazooie games and plays almost identical to them. Yooka can unlock different powers and abilities to use with Laylee in order to complete a world and move to the next one. Being able to explore just five worlds makes the game notably small, but this should not stop people from giving it a try. It is a brilliant and colorful 3D platformer.

3 Oninaki

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

Oninaki is an Action JRPG by Square Enix. Despite its complex story and small flaws keeping it from being perfect, Oninaki has a lot of potential. The combination of story, art style, and music creates a dark and mesmerizing atmosphere.

The gameplay is really solid; you get a mission, travel to its location and kill all the monsters by traveling both in the world of the living and in the world of the dead. There is a huge variety of Daemons to choose, each having their own weapons and skills, allowing you to customize your play-style by picking the ones you prefer.

2 Starlink: Battle For Atlas

10 Underappreciated Nintendo Switch Games (That Are Actually Good)

Starlink: Battle for Atlas is Ubisoft’s ambitious effort to create a 3rd person shooter game with a toys-to-life gimmick. Unfortunately, microtransactions are what made many people avoid the game; the starter pack was too overpriced and at least 1-2 DLC is needed in order to have a proper experience.

Microtransactions and launch price aside, this is a stunning looking 3rd person shooter game with starships. Exploring Atlas’ various planets with a friend (local co-op) is always a plus. Using toys-to-life is optional (you can have ships and weapons digitally) and low sales made the game become very cheap both physically and digitally. Do not forget the exclusive Star Fox content on the Switch.

1 Rime

Rime is a puzzle adventure game that borrows elements from Ico and the Journey. It follows the story of a young boy who wakes up on a mysterious island. Enu, the boy, with the guidance of a cute little fox tries to solve puzzles and explore different locations to unveil the truth about the island and its secrets.

The Switch port received mixed reviews due to the fact that it had many frame drops and blurry resolution. It was playable, but it was obvious that the Switch version was rushed. Thankfully, Tequila Works released a patch that fixed the graphics frame drops. It is a beautiful and emotional journey that should not stay overlooked.
