Not all is butterflies and sunshine in the world of Animal Crossing, and some Redditors hold downright brutal opinions of the happy-go-lucky game.

In the last year or so, Nintendo’s social simulator series Animal Crossing has exploded into mainstream attention with its latest entry, New Horizons. With the ability to craft objects, befriend cute anthropomorphic animals, and design a gorgeous island paradise, New Horizons has brought plenty of joy to players during a tumultuous time.

Not all the attention Animal Crossing received is positive, however, as Reddit once again has plenty to say about the games. From minor nitpicks to outright comment wars, Animal Crossing fervor has taken hold of the site in all the worst ways possible.

10 Isabelle Is Lazy

Isabelle, the tiny Shih-Tzu secretary with a big heart, is a popular character with Animal Crossing fans, and has even made cameos in other Nintendo games. Redditor u/rapunzel316 had a different view of the unofficial series mascot, taking to Reddit and complaining that Isabelle “gets to sit on her butt all day and do nothing”.

Just because the players can’t see the work Isabelle does, however, does not mean that she’s wasting time at work. A lot of paperwork and bureaucracy goes into running an island getaway, and Isabelle takes on this thankless task with no complaints.

9 The Doom Crossover Memes Are Unfunny

Animal Crossing: New Horizons shared its March 20, 2020 release date with Doom: Eternal. Naturally, fans of the two franchises ran with this knowledge, creating memes and fanwork of Isabelle befriending the mysterious Doomslayer and accompanying him on adventures.

Not all fans appreciated the memes, as u/BlackMesaoverApertur complained that the aftermath flooded “the Doom community full of wholesome memes, which is another thing I hate”. While memes eventually do run their course, most fans were quick to point out just how bitter the OP sounded and call them salty in response.

8 Kicks Is Boring

Every now and then, players will receive a visit from Kicks, a shoe-shining skunk with plenty of exclusive shoes, socks, and bags to sell. While most players look forward to browsing his wares, u/shirogaku2 referred to Kicks’ shop as “the most boring building in the game”.

While Kicks may not have as much personality as NPCs like Redd or Blathers, many players consider him a welcome addition to the cast of Animal Crossing. With an adorable design and memorable way of speaking, Kicks perfectly fits the laid-back, low-stakes vibe of Animal Crossing.

7 The Game Shouldn’t Be Real-Time

A major mechanic of the Animal Crossing series is its real-time schedule, which offers plenty of rotating seasonal activities throughout the year. Not all players are fans of the real-time gameplay, as u/DevonianHunger expressed they would play the game more often if they didn’t run the risk of “returning to a dystopian jungle after taking a break for a few weeks”.

While u/DevonianHunger’s concern comes from legitimate worry, removing the real-time mechanics would fundamentally change how Animal Crossing as a game functions. Aside from the loss of seasonal events, players would not be able to experience plants growing or the weather changing.

6 It’s Okay To Bully Villagers

Some villagers are so unpopular with players that their irrational hatred towards them has become a meme in and of itself. A few particularly incensed players have taken their anger out on the villagers themselves, hitting them with nets and subjecting them to humiliating treatment.

While most fans frown upon this behavior, u/princeeggs retorted that it wasn’t a problem because “it’s their game and they do whatever they want with it”. Even still, players have a hard time accepting cruel treatment for characters that did nothing wrong apart from existing.

5 Katrina’s Quotes Are Cringe-Inducing

Katrina, the eccentric fortune-telling panther of Animal Crossing, has always been a staple of the series. User u/kaeorin, however, took to Reddit to complain about the quotes Katrina dispenses to villagers. Although they tried to like her, they could not get past how her advice “makes me cringe every time I go see her”.

Fellow Redditors were quick to point out that u/kaeorin was missing the entire joke of Katrina’s character. She is meant to be a parody of phony psychics, with fake-deep sayings that elicit an ugly laugh from even the most stone-faced of players.

4 The Game Doesn’t Need Updates

Earlier in October, Nintendo released an Animal Crossing direct that announced a number of highly-anticipated new additions coming in the next update. In a particularly contested post, u/Lollynette commented that Nintendo did not owe fans the update and claimed anybody who assumed that “Nintendo would give them more content for free is an idiot”.

Many Redditors took offense at this brazen opinion, particularly when considering how New Horizons lacked many previous features of the Animal Crossing series at launch. Additionally, updating games is generally a solid business move, as it sells more copies to players waiting for extra content.

3 New Horizons Is Too Much Like The Sims

While some players consider New Horizons the best game in the series, some users on Reddit feel otherwise. One Redditor known as u/Link4750 went as far as to compare the games to The Sims 4, namely because of “the game design choices, implementation of the content, and philosophy at Nintendo”.

It’s true that New Horizon’s updates do feel reminiscent of The Sims 4’s infamous updates, but when it comes to content both games couldn’t be more different. Unless Animal Crossing plans on allowing players to feed unwanted villagers to a hungry cowplant, it is safe to assume New Horizons only borrows an otherwise industry-standard update schedule from its fellow simulator series.

2 The Games Are Boring

Not all games appeal to everybody. Redditor u/alanmooreisrasput1 learned this the hard way when they played Animal Crossing: New Leaf as a child, only to discover there was “nothing to do when playing aside from shaking trees and talking to boring villagers”. On Reddit, they vented about their experiences and expressed disapproval towards the series.

Fortunately, u/alanmooreisrasput1’s story has a happy ending, as other Redditors informed them that New Horizons addressed their complaints with the addition of Nook Miles and other activities. If their comments are to be believed, it appears that this Redditor’s curiosity about the series has piqued once again.

1 The Fans Are Too Judgemental

This Reddit thread in particular turned out to be so polarizing that it led to one giant argument in the comments. It all started when u/handsanitizerlover posted a claim that the Animal Crossing community is overwhelmingly toxic, stating that the fans “normalize hating unattractiveness openly”. This statement appears to be in response to fans preferring characters that are conventionally adorable.

It did not take long for other Redditors to come out swinging, mocking u/handsanitizerlover for their over-dramatic rant and accusing them of perpetuating the ‘toxic culture’ they claimed to be against. The thread devolved into an explosive mess, perfectly encapsulating the view most internet denizens hold towards Reddit.
