10 Upcoming NonDCEU Projects Featuring DC Stars

There are plenty of exciting developments coming up in the DCEU in the next couple of years. Ben Affleck is returning to the role of Batman for a supporting role in The Flash movie, Gal Gadot is signed on to return for a third Wonder Woman film, and John Cena’s Peacemaker is getting his own streaming series spun off from The Suicide Squad.

But on top of all that, the DCEU’s stars have found time to star in a bunch of other exciting film and TV projects. Henry Cavill is back for a new season of The Witcher and Margot Robbie is playing Barbie for Greta Gerwig.

10 Henry Cavill – The Witcher Season 2 (December 17, 2021)

On-screen adaptations of video games rarely find success, either critically or commercially, but Henry Cavill’s Witcher series on Netflix has critical acclaim and viewership to rival fellow medieval fantasy series Game of Thrones.

After The Witcher became one of Netflix’s most popular original series, it was renewed for a second season. Season 2 will consist of eight episodes that will drop on the streaming service on December 17. Netflix has already announced a season 3 renewal before season 2 has even premiered.

9 Idris Elba – Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (April 8, 2022)

Another exception to the rule that video game adaptations are doomed to fail is Sonic the Hedgehog, a buddy road movie take on the Sonic games.

After the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie became one of the last bona fide blockbuster hits before the pandemic shut everything down, a sequel was announced. The sequel, set to be released next April, will introduce The Suicide Squad’s Idris Elba in the iconic role of Knuckles.

8 Margot Robbie – Live-Action Barbie Movie (TBD)

In addition to playing Harley Quinn in the DCEU, Margot Robbie is taking on another iconic role, Barbie, in a live-action film adaptation of the classic doll line. Ryan Gosling has been cast to play Ken opposite Robbie’s Barbie.

Movie adaptations of toys don’t usually fare well, but this one is lucky enough to have Lady Bird and Little Women’s Greta Gerwig in the director’s chair.

7 Ezra Miller – Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore (April 15, 2022)

10 Upcoming NonDCEU Projects Featuring DC Stars

Next year, Ezra Miller is finally getting his own Flash movie in which Barry Allen’s attempts to reverse his mother’s death will upend the multiverse, prompting the intervention of Ben Affleck’s Batman, Michael Keaton’s Batman, and a new version of Supergirl.

Miller will also be seen reprising his role as Credence Barebone in the third Harry Potter spin-off movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. David Yates is directing from a script written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves.

6 Amy Adams – Disenchanted (Late 2022)

10 Upcoming NonDCEU Projects Featuring DC Stars

Amy Adams’ Lois Lane has always been more than a straightforward love interest in the DCEU. According to the Flash, she’s “the key” to saving the world in the prophesized dystopian Knightmare future.

But Adams’ most iconic role is arguably the satirical deconstruction of Disney princesses she played in Enchanted. Fans have been waiting for a sequel to Enchanted for years, and in late 2022, if they’re subscribed to Disney+, they’ll finally get to see one.

5 Jason Momoa – Slumberland (2022)

10 Upcoming NonDCEU Projects Featuring DC Stars

Jason Momoa has made a name playing badass warriors in movies and TV shows like Game of Thrones, Conan the Barbarian, Aquaman, and Dune. But his next movie is a family-friendly fantasy adventure from director Francis Lawrence.

Scheduled to be released on Netflix in 2022, Slumberland tells the story of a young girl who discovers a secret map that helps her navigate the dream world.

4 John Cena – Project X-Traction (2022)

John Cena’s appearance as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad seemed like a one-and-done deal when Bloodsport supposedly killed him. But the post-credits scene revealed that he narrowly survived the gunshot and he’ll live to lead his own streaming series.

As if Cena isn’t busy enough, he’s also working on a buddy action movie with Jackie Chan called Project X-Traction. They play ex-Special Forces soldiers attempting to escort Baghdad civilians to the safety of the Green Zone.

3 Will Smith – Emancipation (TBD)

10 Upcoming NonDCEU Projects Featuring DC Stars

Will Smith didn’t return as Deadshot in the second Suicide Squad movie, but Idris Elba played the new character Bloodsport to allow Smith to return in the future. Smith’s next project is Emancipation, a historical action thriller from director Antoine Fuqua.

The Apple TV+ original movie follows a slave who flees from a Louisiana plantation and joins the Union Army. Producer Joey McFarland and screenwriter William N. Collage spent years researching the project before shopping it around.

2 Ben Affleck – Deep Water (TBD)

Ben Affleck is returning to the role of Batman alongside Ezra Miller in the upcoming Flash movie, but he’s also working on plenty of original projects. One such project is Deep Water, an erotic psychological thriller from Fatal Attraction director Adrian Lyne.

Affleck stars alongside Ana de Armas as a disillusioned married couple who start playing twisted mind games with each other. The movie was recently pulled from the release schedule, so it’s unclear when it’ll hit theaters.

1 Gal Gadot – Cleopatra (TBD)

After the success of Wonder Woman 1984, director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot were tapped by Warner Bros. to reunite for a third solo movie. Around the same time, the duo announced another project they were working on: a new biopic of Cleopatra.

According to Variety, Jenkins has dropped out of directing Cleopatra and will instead handle producing duties. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Kari Skogland has taken over as director, working from a screenplay by Shutter Island’s Laeta Kalogridis.
