Star Trek: Prodigy recently received a season 2 order that also extended its first season from 10 episodes to 20. To prepare for that, and to give Star Trek: Discovery room, Prodigy went on hiatus after only five episodes. Star Trek is currently thriving on the small screen with four current shows and more on the way.

Prodigy’s primary focus is to appeal to a much younger audience. That means the show exists in a mysterious place in the Star Trek canon but there are plenty of clues and connections for new and old fans alike to sink their teeth into.

A Hologram Janeway

Captain Kathryn Janeway is one of the best characters in Star Trek Voyager. Her mission for the entire run of the show was to get her crew home from the Delta Quadrant as quickly as possible. At the end of the seven-year journey, she did just that. The last audiences saw of her was in a cameo on Star Trek: Nemesis which revealed she had been promoted to Admiral.

While Star Trek: Prodigy doesn’t reveal exactly what happened to the original Janeway, her hologram gives some clues as to her Starfleet status. A hologram was modeled after her for the Emergency Command Hologram on the USS Protostar and the show may be setting her up to have a similar trajectory as the EMH from Star Trek: Voyager.

The Delta Quadrant

The Delta Quadrant is a familiar setting for trek fans as the home of The Borg and the main setting for Star Trek: Voyager. That quadrant of the galaxy remains mostly unexplored by Star Trek standards. Voyager may have encountered new species and threats but they mostly plotted a straight line out of the quadrant and would often skip entire lightyears.

While the young crew of the Protostar may be interested in getting out of the Delta Quadrant and into Federation space, Prodigy allows audiences to find entirely new planets and species. This would go a long way to fulfilling Star Trek’s primary mission, which is to explore strange new worlds.

The USS Protostar

The mysterious ship at the heart of Star Trek: Prodigy is the USS Protostar. This strange ship seems smaller than the average Federation ship and is more streamlined than even the USS Defiant. But the design is unquestionably Starfleet. The design of the ship invokes other experimental vessels such as the USS Equinox from Star Trek: Voyager.

Its NX designation hints to it being an experimental ship that has traveled farther than few have before. Throughout Voyager’s journey, they were always trying to figure out how to travel faster than their maximum warp, but the designers of the Protostar seem to have found a solution. The ship is equipped with a Protostar engine that allows them to travel much faster than any previous Federation starship.

The Medusan Species

Even though it wasn’t the most iconic episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, “In Truth Is There No Beauty?” introduced the Medusans. The Medusans were a noncorporeal and genderless species that were highly intelligent and telepathic. But the sight of them would make corporeal beings lose their mind.

In Star Trek: Prodigy, one Medusan named Zero was able to cobble together a containment unit so that they could interact with corporeal beings without them losing their minds. Unlike others in their species, it doesn’t seem to be a particularly skilled navigator and it remains to be seen how they ended up so far from their people.

A Bird of Prey

One of the most iconic ships in the entire iconography of Star Trek is the Klingon Bird of Prey. Klingon’s are some of the most memorable heroes and villains in the franchise. These ships are fast and can pack a punch and they’ve been a thorn in the Federations side and an asset in times of need. Like all Klingon ships, they’re equipped with a cloaking device and the interiors are spartan in nature.

On the murder planet that the crew of the Protostar discovered, they found refuge in a crashed vessel that is all too familiar to Trek fans: A Bird of Prey. How the bird of prey got out there wasn’t explained but the heroes took shelter in this ship and discovered Klingon food like Gagh and a Klingon weapon such as Mek’leth.

Star Trek: Discovery Is Mentioned

Star Trek: Discovery was the first new Star Trek show to come out, back when the streaming service was called CBS All Access, and it quickly became a huge success that ushered in a new golden age for Star Trek. Within the plot of the show, after season 2, the USS Discovery was sent 900 years into the future and all records of the ship were sealed so that the canon of the franchise could be maintained.

When Hologram Janeway explains the Federation to the new crew of the Protostar, she brings up a hologram of all sorts of ships, one being the USS Discovery. Perhaps by the late 24th century, the records of the Discovery were unsealed. Not much is made of this ship but it is the first time one of the current Star Trek shows referenced another current one and not just a classic one.

Familiar Enemies

Voyager made a lot of friends in the Delta Quadrant and more than a few enemies. Throughout the show, they would go up against species like the Kazon, a nomadic species, and the Hirogen, a hunting species that would hunt Voyager for sport.

Both species get mentioned in Star Trek: Prodigy. One member of the Kazon is seen supplying the mining colony with new workers to mine the crystals, and Hologram Janeway recommends that the Protostar steer away from Hirogen space, considering they’re one of Star Trek’s strongest species, is a wise decision. Since only a few episodes are out at this time, it remains to be seen if these species will have regular appearances.

The Caitians Make An Appearance

Caitians have very rarely appeared in live-action and often are prominently featured in animated shows. A cat-like alien, they first made an appearance in Star Trek: The Animated Series and then again in Star Trek: Lower Decks.

In a brief scene in Prodigy, Gwyn shows compassion to a young Caitian child, even going so far as to speak in her native language. Sadly this child was put to work on the mining colony and was left behind when Gwyn and the rest of the main characters escaped on the Protostar.

Tellarites

A founding member of the Federation, the Tellarites are pig-like humanoid species and need very little explanation outside of that. They have rarely played a large role in Star Trek, outside of a few supporting appearances.

Prodigy has set to boldly go where no one has gone before, by introducing a Tellarite as one of the main characters in the form of Jankom Pog. While he’s unlike others of his species in the sense that he speaks in the third person, his attitude fits right at home with some of the more brutish members.

The Federation

The Federation is the promise of Utopia. Many alien species such as Andorians, Vulcans, Humans, and others came together to form an alliance that would strive for peace and harmony in the galaxy.

The Federation is nothing but a dream to the characters in Prodigy but it’s one they want to chase. Working together on the Protostar has given them their own smaller version of the Federation.
