10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

2019 was undoubtedly an iconic year for films. Whether horror, drama, comedy, or biopics, it seems every genre got a chance to shine last year. Not only did 2019 provide a plethora of great films that will remain sustainable for decades to come, but the year was also groundbreaking in terms of prestigious awards shows, as well. Bong Joon-ho’s Korean-language film, Parasite, won the Academy Award for Best Feature Film, becoming the first international film to do so.

But in this list, we will not look at the best of 2019, but rather, the worst. As usual, there were plenty of forgettable or just plain bad films to come out of 2019, and moreover, there were several memorably problematic fictional romantic relationships. Let’s take a look at some of the notably worst.

10 Jo & Friedrich (Little Women)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women, was first published in 1868 and has since left a legacy in countless readers’ lives. Little Women has been subject to multiple film adaptations, the first one being a Britsh silent film that was released in 1917.

With every adaptation of Little Women comes a different portrayal of the core four – Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth – and the relationships that touch their lives. In Greta Gerwig’s adaptation, she cast Saorise Ronan and Timothee Chalamet as Jo and Laurie, which may have been a mistake considering the portrayal came across with vibes of a star-crossed lovers story. Since Jo ends up with the charming Friedrich at the end of the film, fans couldn’t help but feel a little disheartened for what could have been.

9 Kate & Tom (Last Christmas)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

Despite having a lot going for it – with a talented cast that included Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, and Emma Thompson, as well as a screenplay co-written by Thompson, Last Christmas proceeded to flop at the box office after a very much anticipated premiere.

This Christmas-themed rom-com did not manage to live up to the hype and is widely considered to be one of the more forgettable films to come out of 2019. This is largely because of the flimsy romance that the film is centered around. It spends a good portion of its runtime building up a romance between main characters Kate and Tom, only to reveal that Tom has been dead the whole time. While there was nothing particularly bad about their “romance,” it just made the film feel overly sentimental.

8 Amy & Laurie (Little Women)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

Little Women, along with being adapted into multiple films over the years, has also been transformed into an opera, a broadway show, an animated Japanese television series, and a PBS miniseries. Among these countless adaptations, Gillian Armstrong’s 1994 film starring Winona Ryder among an all-star cast, was probably the most well-known before Greta Gerwig’s interpretation came along.

Although fans of the classic tale knew how Gerwig’s adaptation would end, Jo and Laurie’s bond stole the show. The chemistry between them simply overshadowed the potential for a romance between Amy and Laurie, causing the execution of the latter storyline to feel somewhat contrived, and honestly, just wrong.

7 Will & Stella (Five Feet Apart)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

Five Feet Apart was released in theatres on March 15. The film was inspired by the life of a real-life couple, who both suffered from cystic fibrosis. Five Feet Apart most likely attempted to follow in the footsteps of the success of other angsty teen drama films that largely revolved around serious illnesses, such as the 2014 adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars.

Five Feet Apart revolved around the lives of Stella and Will, who meet in a hospital and bond over their illness. The concept is fine, but the romance between these two characters was the film’s main focus, and their dynamic was just not strong enough to support that.

6 Jack & Ellie (Yesterday)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

Likely attempting to piggyback off the success of recent musical biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) and Rocketman (2019), Yesterday was hyped up as a twist on this genre. The film followed a young man’s troubled journey to become a musician, which is suddenly changed drastically when he becomes one of the only people who remember the existence of The Beatles.

Yesterday lacked the charm and offbeat quirkiness that it should have had with a plot like the one aforementioned. But to make things worse, the film’s romantic subplot was weak at best. The main character, Jack, carries on a charmless friendship with his longtime acquaintance Emily, abandons her to pursue his Beatles copy-cat career, and then dedicates a song to her and all is amended.

5 Anna & Kristoff (Frozen 2)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

When Frozen was released in theatres in 2013, it charmed audiences, adults and children alike, and would leave a legacy difficult for other Disney princess films to live up to. Frozen was prided in being a “different” princess movie because it revolved more around the bond between sisters, Anna and Elsa, rather than the romantic subplots. Nevertheless, audiences loved the adorable fledgling romance between Kristoff and Anna, so anticipation for what came next for the couple was high when Frozen 2 was released in November.

It’s a common opinion among Disney fans that Frozen’s sequel did not come close to living up to the legacy that the original film set. This is especially true when it comes to the portrayal of Kristoff and Anna’s relationship in Frozen 2. The couple did get engaged at the end of the film, but for the better part of the journey, their relationship was portrayed in a rather unattractive light.

4 Columbus & Wichita (Zombieland 2: Double Tap)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

Columbus and Wichita’s relationship served as the main and only romance in the 2010 horror comedy, Zombieland. They were no doubt an odd couple, but their charm and awkwardness gave them iconic status.

However the sequel – as sequels often do – worked to taint this once beloved relationship for good. Although it was once again the main romance of the film, Zombieland 2: Double Tap put Columbus and Wichita at odds for the better part of the story, seemingly conveying that these two actually bring out the worst in each other.

3 Grace & Daniel (Ready Or Not)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

Ready Or Not was perhaps one of the most underestimated horror films to come out of 2019. The trailer and marketing surrounding the movie did not actually do it justice, and it’s considered to be quite underrated.

Ready Or Not largely focused on the relationship between the main character, Grace and her new husband, Alex. After the two wed, horror ensues as Alex’s family proceeds to hunt Grace down in their mansion to fulfill an age-old family “tradition.” Alex sticks by Grace for a portion of the film, but when things get bloody, he abandons his new wife and attempts to throw her to the wolves. Luckily, Grace outwits Alex and the rest of his family in a satisfying conclusion.

2 Hardin & Tessa (After)

10 Worst Relationships In 2019 Movies Ranked

After was easily one of the most controversial films to come out of 2019. Based on, of all things, a Harry Styles Wattpad fanfiction-turned-published-book by writer Anna Todd, this film was met by strong criticism from audiences and critics alike.

The biggest problem with After was its entire plot, which revolved around the romance between main characters, Tessa and Hardin. The relationship in question was completely toxic and abusive, yet the film spent its entire runtime romanticizing it.

1 Christian & Dani (Midsommar)

Midsommar was one of 2019’s most talked-about horror films. A twisty follow-up to writer/director, Ari Aster’s 2018 psychological horror, Hereditary, Midsommar will likely remain iconic and celebrated for years to come.

Described by Aster himself as a “break-up movie,” Midsommar follows Dani’s journey when she accompanies her boyfriend Christian and his friends to Sweden. Christian and Dani’s relationship and its many problems are a major part of the film, and by the end, we are left with the consensus that while Dani tried her best to be a good girlfriend, Christian was unapologetically a terrible boyfriend.
