The Hulk is a very powerful character within the Marvel Universe, but that doesn’t mean terrible things haven’t happened to him.

Throughout his many versions, The Hulk might be one of the strongest characters in the Marvel universe. Ridiculously strong and resilient (and, in more recent comics, retconned to be immortal), The Hulk is essentially invincible. However, that does not mean that tragedy does not befall the character across the many Marvel Comic stories he appears in.

Since his inception, The Hulk has faced tribulations that eclipse what many other heroes in the Marvel universe come up against. While these have ranged from the very serious to the most absurd, they have drastically impacted the character and his portrayal within the Marvel universe.

His Terrible Upbringing

Some of the worst things to happen to Bruce Banner occurred before he even gained his identity as The Hulk. Bruce had a traumatic upbringing in which he was abused by his father.

Brian Banner believed his son was a mutant and the abuse escalated, eventually culminating in the death of Rebecca Banner, Bruce’s mother. Bruce was subsequently raised by his aunt and uncle, but the trauma of the abuse never truly went away.

Becoming The Hulk

When Bruce Banner was exposed to massive amounts of gamma radiation, it transformed him into The Hulk. While this newfound power gave Bruce the ability to become a powerful superhero, it also, in many ways, affected his life for the worse.

In many early publications, The Hulk was shunned and ridiculed by society, and even when he became more generally accepted, the destruction he caused made him feared by many. In fact, many of the most terrible things to happen to the character arise from the negative way he is viewed by society, and the damage he often causes, which all stems from the time he first gained his powers.

He Was Exiled by The Illuminati

After one of his many rampages, The Hulk was eventually seen as a massive threat to the Earth by the Illuminati, a powerful group of superheroes with members ranging from Professor X to Iron Man.

The Illuminati attempted to exile The Hulk to a peaceful planet, but a navigation error caused The Hulk to land on the planet of Sakaar instead, a war-torn world where the Hulk was captured and forced to fight as a gladiator. The trauma that the character endured here is one of the most painful and difficult things he has had to face.

The Love Of His Life Died

Even in the violent reality of Sakaar, The Hulk was able to carve out a peaceful life. He even married the Sakaarian queen, Caiera, which is one of the aspects of Planet Hulk fans may have forgotten. But this bliss was not to last.

The shuttle that stranded The Hulk on Sakaar exploded, leaving widespread death and destruction and killing a pregnant Caiera. The Hulk would eventually return to Earth in an attempt to avenger her, and Caiera’s death would weigh heavily on him.

He Was Killed By Hawkeye

The Marvel universe was drastically affected by the emergence of the Inhuman Ulysses, who had the ability to see the future. Ulysses foresaw the Hulk losing control and going on a massive onslaught, causing the avengers to confront Bruce Banner. When he became agitated, the superhero Hawkeye used a special arrowhead provided by Bruce to kill him in one of the many times Hulk died in Marvel Comics.

Unfortunately, this was not the end for the hero and he was unable to rest even in death. Bruce’s body was used multiple times by nefarious factions before his resurrection, including by a group of ninjas known as The Hand. Not to mention, his death may have been for naught, as Ulysses’ powers are soon revealed to not be completely accurate.

Forced To Fight His Evil Future Self

While the Hulk was often seen as a villain, at one point he was taken to the future by the time-traveler Janis Jones to fight a truly villainous version of himself. The Maestro was a stronger version of Hulk with Bruce Banner’s intelligence, who used his abilities to kill all other heroes and villains and declare himself the ruler of Earth.

The Hulk was eventually able to prevail and kill Maestro, but the villain would later reappear. In addition to this, the thought of becoming Maestro continued to haunt Bruce.

He Becomes A Cannibal In An Alternate Future

Old Man Logan follows an alternate future, where many characters in the Marvel Universe are dead or drastically changed, with Bruce Banner falling into the latter category. In this version of events, Bruce is a murderous cannibal with a number of equally bloodthirsty children.

Such alternate universes allow for wildly out-of-character portrayals such as this and luckily for Hulk fans, this version was not to last. This homicidal monster would meet his end at the hands of Logan, which is one of the things only comic fans know about Wolverine and Hulk.

He Was Possessed By A Magic Hammer

The crossover event Fear Itself saw the powerful Asgardian warlord, The Serpent, attempt to conquer Earth. To do so, seven powerful hammers fell across the world, causing whoever could lift them to be possessed by the Worthy, his trusted servants.

Hulk was possessed by the worthy known as Nul, and carved a swathe of destruction until the vampiric Inka posed as Betty Ross and placated him. It was a traumatic sequence of events that is no doubt one of the worst things to ever happen to The Hulk.

His Power’s Form Of Manifestation

Due to a lifetime of trauma and abuse, Bruce Banner suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder. This strongly manifests in different versions of The Hulk that have appeared over the years.

From the more intelligent “Professor Hulk,” to the violent and cruel “Devil Hulk,” to the supremely powerful “Green Scar,” Bruce Banner’s trauma affects the world in very tangible ways and continues to have ramifications in even the most recent comics featuring the character.

He’s Been Replaced Multiple Times

For all of his history and unique abilities, The Hulk has lost relevance many times. Other characters have often eclipsed Bruce Banner in importance. From his cousin, She-Hulk, to the young genius Amadeus Cho, multiple characters throughout Marvel’s history have become more important at various times than the original Hulk.

While Bruce Banner is still a vitally important character, he has also been pushed out of his own niche by other heroes. While it’s not something that the character himself will be aware of, it’s one of the worst things that happened to both him and his loyal fans over the years.
