12 Dates Of Christmas season 2 will feature Markelle Smith as the gay male lead looking for love on the HBO Max dating series. In 2020, Garrett Marcantel’s casting on 12 Dates Of Christmas turned him into the first gay male lead of a major dating competition show. This was a very welcome change for the dating reality TV genre, which long ignored queer contestants and/or edited their storylines down if something ever came up on a show.

Times are thankfully changing, and the success of 12 Dates Of Christmas season 1 has encouraged HBO Max to double down on casting diverse contestants for season 2. This year, 12 Dates will only feature one straight lead, Danny Escalante. Meanwhile, the season will have two queer leads, Markelle Smith and Amanda Grace Jenkins. With so much hype behind the return of this dating show just in time for the holiday season, fans now want to learn more about Markelle.

Markelle, who will be looking for Mr. Right on 12 Dates Of Christmas, identified himself as a 31-year-old dentist from New York City. According to his Instagram page @dr.markelle, he’s also a yogi who’s been pursuing certification to teach yoga. Markelle described his dream man as someone who is fun, funny, tall, and athletic. E! Online pointed out that Markelle grew up in Demopolis, Alabama and noted that he knows the full choreography of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies”. A quick scroll through Markelle’s Instagram grid shows that the 12 Dates Of Christmas star is not only a lot of fun but also quite successful, so he’s a great choice to get cast as one of the leads on the show. Last year, Garrett didn’t manage to find a soulmate on 12 Dates, but he did end up hosting a holiday party for all of his love interests from the show. One can hope that Markelle will have better luck in season 2 and might actually find love in the dating competition. The trailer certainly makes it look like this season will be a roller-coaster ride, but hopefully some good connections will be made throughout this journey.
