Many have found themselves binge-watching multiple episodes of HGTV’s hit show, Love It or List It. But after a few Love It or List It behind-the-scenes moments were shared by guests on the show, people began to wonder if Love It or List It was fake. As is the case with reality TV, not everything fans see on their screens is as it’s projected.

12 Hilary And David Met During Auditions

Hilary and David have great onscreen chemistry. It’s their chemistry that will make Love It or List It a decorating show that fans won’t forget. Fans would think they have known each other for years before they started filming the show, but that’s not true. In fact, they never met until they auditioned to appear on the HGTV show, according to The List.

Before auditioning for the show, David had a successful real estate career, and Hilary had her own interior design career. Hilary was the first to be cast for the show, and David followed closely after. He recalled the producers telling him, “You’re brilliant. We want you. We think you’re going to make Hilary look good.” The producers weren’t wrong. They’re a dynamic duo.

11 They’re Best Friends

Some costars don’t actually get along behind-the-scenes and when fans find out about this, it can be disappointing. But the audience doesn’t have to worry about Hilary and David’s real-life chemistry. They’re even best friends when the cameras stop rolling. The blogger of Hooked on Houses reiterated this fact by saying, “If you really believe that the same basic pattern plays out naturally in every episode (the homeowners don’t trust Hilary’s plan, they hate the first house David shows them, Hilary runs into a major construction/financial problem that requires eliminating one of the projects she promised the homeowners she’d do, and then David finds them their dream house), well, I have a bridge to sell you.”

9 From The USA To Canada

There are a ton of great movies and shows filmed in Canada. And believe it or not, Love It or List It used to be filmed in Toronto, Canada. Hilary and David filmed the start of the series in Toronto without actually giving away their location. But HGTV moved their location to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2014, according to CheatSheet. The difference in location was obvious for viewers because Toronto and Raleigh were incredibly different. The reason was never explained but after the COVID-19 hit, HGTV moved the series back to Canada once again.

8 Homeowners Hardly See Hilary And David

The show creates the idea that the homeowners meet with Hilary and David numerous times during the renovation process. However, this isn’t true. Hilary and David rarely meet with the homeowners during the filming of an episode. For when they meet and discuss the home or David’s property prospects, the scenes are short and rehearsed.

While this is disappointing, it’s standard practice for most home renovation shows on HGTV. Other shows, including Fixer Upper, Windy City Rehab, Curb Appeal: The Block, and others, rarely have the hosts interact with the homeowners. Instead, they interact more with the show’s producers and film crew.

7 It’s Somewhat Scripted

Like many other reality TV renovation shows, Love It or List It follows a strict formula. Every episode has the same premise: a couple wants Hilary to renovate their home within their budget, while David shows them houses on the market. One partner in the couple usually wants to stay at their home, while the other is desperate to move. Hilary has design complications and then the couple makes a decision at the end of the episode if they’re going to “love it or list it.”

This is the “script” every episode follows. It’s what sells the show to viewers, and some participants have revealed that the show is even scripted in what the couples can say. However, Hilary has denied some of these remarks. The Contractor noted that Hilary said, “The show is not at all scripted and the reactions of the homeowners to renovation realities and bad news is very real.”

6 Filming Two Different Endings

This might be disappointing to fans, but the endings of the show are usually faked and scripted for the camera, according to Cheat Sheet. Even HGTV shows like Good Bones are somewhat scripted. The producers have everyone film two different endings: one where the couple chooses to “love” their home, and another where they decide to “list” it.

Then, during the post-production and editing process, the producers decide which ending works best for the episode. Which one will be more satisfying and entertaining for viewers? So, if a couple decides to love or list their home on the show, it might not actually be true.

5 It Had A Nasty Lawsuit

In 2016, a CBS News article revealed that Raleigh, North Carolina, couple Deena Murphy and Timothy Sullivan took the show’s producers to court after they were dissatisfied with a home renovation. They paid $140,00 for the project and in return, Hilary and her design team painted shut windows and performed “low-grade industrial carpeting.” They even damaged the home.

The couple said, “[Farr and Visentin] are actors or television personalities playing a role … In this case, none of them played more than a casual role in the actual renovation process.”

4 They Leave Jobs Undone

According to many show participants, Hilary’s renovation team leaves many of their jobs undone. They start a project but they don’t finish them. Instead, some rooms are professionally “finished” to look presentable for the cameras. According to Hooked on Houses, after the episode is filmed, the furniture and additional renovation designs are removed from the home.

With tight budgets and time constraints, it would be difficult for Hilary and her team to renovate the entire house, but fans wish it was possible. With the entire job only being “half” done, maybe viewers should rethink signing on to join this show.

3 Some Of The Houses Aren’t Even Listed

While Hilary is renovating the couple’s home, David shows them three possible homes on the real estate market. One of them (usually the last home) is nearly perfect and meets the couple’s needs.

However, just like House Hunters, some of the homes aren’t even for sale, claims Nicki Swift. They might be friends’ homes or homes the show’s producers find. This fact may make some fans look at the show differently.

2 More People Love Rather Than List Their Homes

Fans of Love It or List It know that more people tend to “love” their renovated home than “list” it, claims Country Living. While both reality tv hosts have great advice and ideas, Hilary typically wins the competition, even though David does a good job trying to convince the couple to move.

Some couples even sign on to be featured on the show when they already know what their decision is going to be. They are going to love their home, but they simply want Hilary and her team of interior designers to renovate the home. They also enjoy the 30 minutes of fame.

1 They Might Not Even List Their Homes

When a couple decides to “list” their home, it might not mean what you think. If they don’t love the renovations Hilary and her team made on their house, they decide to list it on the market. However, these couples might not actually list their homes at all.

According to some participants, they decided to announce that they’re going to list their home, but they don’t decide to do that once the filming is wrapped up. They had a professional renovation on their home, and they decide to keep it that way. Regardless of these truth bombs, Love It or List It is still a family-friendly reality show that fans can’t get enough of.
