13 MCU Movies Including Avengers & ShangChi To Stream in IMAX Ratio

Starting this Friday, 13 MCU movies will be available to stream on Disney+ in a special IMAX format. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming off an interesting weekend following the release of Eternals, the 26th movie in the expansive franchise. After earning some of the weakest reviews in the MCU, Eternals also came in a bit below expectations at the box office (though still with one of the highest openings of the year). It arrived on the heels of fellow Phase 4 titles Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and it’ll be followed by Spider-Man: No Way Home in December.

The MCU is set to play a big part in this Friday’s Disney+ Day event. The occasion, which falls on the second anniversary of Disney+’s launch on November 12, will offer exciting deals for new subscribers and a wealth of new content for those already on board. In addition to shorts and specials from The Simpsons, Pixar, and Star Wars, Disney+ Day will feature the streaming premiere of Shang-Chi, which scored an exclusive theatrical run in early September and currently stands as the highest-grossing movie of 2021.

On Monday, Disney announced another surprise for Marvel fans set to arrive with Friday’s event. Marvel Studios and IMAX have partnered up to bring specially formatted versions of 13 MCU movies to Disney+ subscribers. Officially titled IMAX Enhanced on Disney+, the collaboration will give the movies an expanded IMAX ratio (1:90:1), thus offering viewers 26% more picture on their screens for select sequences. The 13 titles getting this special treatment are Shang-Chi, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow.

IMAX has always been a major partner for the MCU, both in the production stage and through release. Infinity War and Endgame were both among the first Hollywood movies to shoot entirely on IMAX cameras, so it’s quite fitting they will be among those shown in this special format on Disney+. Additionally, for a movie like Black Widow, which also released at home back in July, this venture gives audiences the opportunity to check out a more theatrical format that they might have missed before.

As noted above, only select sequences will show the true scope of the IMAX Enhanced on Disney+ feature, and those will most likely be the action scenes. It won’t have quite the same effect as watching these MCU films on the big screen, but it’s a clever way to continue with this premium format once they’ve left theaters. Fans can discover the full potential of this starting on Disney+ Day this Friday.
