My Hero Academia has risen to become one of the most popular anime shows in recent years. And rightfully so—it tackles the superhero genre really well, has a good comedic atmosphere, knows when it’s time to get serious, has interesting characters with interesting abilities, and has thrilling, action-packed fight scenes. Not only that, but it also has a lot of emotional and “feel good” moments, drawing out a wide range of emotions from the viewers. Too bad the next season isn’t coming out until October 2019. Fortunately, there’s a number of anime you can watch right now that are similar to My Hero Academia. Here are 10 of them.

Shonen action is arguably the biggest genre of anime out there, and we’ve chosen five more series (out of many) that fans of My Hero Academia are bound to like. Anime is bigger than ever, and the Shonen world just keeps growing. Let’s consider fifteen impressive anime that are like cousins to My hero Academia.

15 One Punch Man

If you like My Hero Academia mainly because of the superhero theme, then you’ll like One Punch Man. It tells the story of Saitama, a bald superhero who’s so strong he finishes off his enemies in just one punch. That may seem like a good thing if you want to have a stable career as a superhero, but Saitama is absolutely bored with it. He doesn’t care much about saving the world—he only wants to find a worthy opponent. The fact that most people, including his fellow superheroes, aren’t aware of his enormous strength, as well as his indifference and inability to remember people’s names and faces, makes One Punch Man one of the most hilarious anime in the industry.

14 Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyoushitsu)

The characters in this show aren’t superheroes—they’re normal middle school students who are struggling not to fail in school. However, they’ve been tasked with assassinating a yellow octopus-like creature who swears to destroy the earth in one year. This creature, later named Kuro-sensei, becomes their homeroom teacher and helps them improve their grades while teaching them how to assassinate him. It sounds weird, but you have to give it a try. It’s hilarious, teaches life lessons, and really tugs at your heartstrings sometimes. Plus Kuro-sensei is kind of like All Might in that he really inspires his students.

13 Hunter X Hunter

There are so many good things to be said about this show. One of the best-written shows in the history of anime, Hunter X Hunter revolves around a young boy named Gon who goes on a journey to find his dad, a renowned Hunter. Long story short, he takes the Hunter Exam, makes a few good friends who join him in his adventure, gets stronger and meets really interesting villains along the way. It’s similar to My Hero Academia in that there’s a strong focus on friendship and that the characters are always fighting opponents much stronger than them.

12 Yu Yu Hakusho

The oldest anime show on the list, Yu Yu Hakusho was written by the same author as Hunter X Hunter. Although its fight scenes are more similar to Dragon Ball since they come from the same era, Yu Yu Hakusho still has similarities with My Hero Academia. The protagonist, Yusuke, is a middle school student who is revived by the Spirit World after dying in a car accident in exchange for becoming the Spirit Detective. He constantly battles evil forces to save the world and is often accompanied by his classmate Kuwabara and two demons whom he ends up befriending after one of his missions.

11 Tiger & Bunny

In Tiger & Bunny, being a superhero is an actual job. Superheroes known as “NEXT” fight villains to gain hero points which they can use to appear on a reality TV show called HeroTV. Basically, it’s not just about saving the world, it’s about profits as well. The protagonist is a veteran hero named Wild Tiger who, after a series of failures in his career, gets paired up with an up-and-coming hero named Barnaby. And like Deku and Bakugo, they don’t really get along. Will they be able to settle their differences and save the day? There’s one good way to find out.

10 Black Clover

One of the many things that fans like about My Hero Academia is the underdog story. Deku is weak and quirkless but is determined to be a hero no matter what. He does end up getting a quirk eventually, although in a very unusual manner. Well, in Black Clover you have Asta, a person with no magical abilities but desires to be the Wizard King. Asta, like Deku, is later granted some magnificent powers that enable him to take on the hardest of challenges to make his dream come true.

9 Mob Pyscho 100

Like Deku, Mob Psycho 100’s protagonist, Mob, is a kind-hearted young boy who has an immense power that he has trouble controlling. But unlike Deku, Mob doesn’t want to be anything special—he just wants to live a normal life like everyone around him. So he works as an assistant to a self-proclaimed psychic to learn how to control his power. Unfortunately for him, however, trouble likes to come after him, threatening to unleash the power he’s working hard to contain. Mob Psycho 100 has fewer shounen traits than My Hero Academia, but it still has some pretty good fight scenes you would surely enjoy.

8 Katekyo Hitman Reborn!

This show’s main character, Tsuna, is eerily similar to Deku. They’re both weak physically and mentally, and they both have little confidence in their own strengths. But then they meet a man who unlocks their true potential and changes their world forever. Unlike Deku who wants to get stronger, however, Tsuna isn’t interested in getting stronger, doesn’t like fighting, and absolutely doesn’t want to become what his mentor wants him to be, that being a mafia boss. Although the plots heavily differ, both shows have likable characters, great fight scenes, and great humor.

7 Soul Eater

In Soul Eater, teenage characters with supernatural abilities are taught—in a school setting—how to use their abilities to defeat evil villains. So while they’re not wearing costumes nor are they called superheroes, they do engage in thrilling battles to save the world. The show is often comical and lighthearted but takes a serious turn when enemies appear. The characters also have very interesting personalities and abilities. Some of them turn into weapons that are wielded by their chosen partners to fight off enemies. If you like the smooth animation of My Hero Academia, you’ll like Soul Eater’s as well. They’re both made by the same animation studio.

6 Blue Exorcist (Ao No Exorcist)

As with My Hero Academia and Soul Eater, the main characters in this show go to a specialized school to get stronger and learn how to defeat their enemies: Satan and his demonic empire. Called exorcists, these students are joined by the spawn of Satan himself, Rin, who swears he will kill Satan with his own hands. Rin was adopted by a priest when he was a baby and had no idea he was Satan’s son until the day his real father killed his foster father. This tragic event leads Rin to pursue a path of revenge, but not without making some friends and learning more important things along the way.

5 Little Witch Academia

You must have noticed that this anime series also has “Academia” in the name, and the similarities between this charming franchise and My Hero Academia are many. Meet Akko, a 16-year-old girl who dreams to become a witch, to help people and make the world a better place. She also adores the famed witch Shiny Chariot, who is a role model to girls everywhere. Despite having no obvious magic powers of her own, Akko enrolls at the Luna Nova witch school to pursue her dream, and she makes many new friends (and a few enemies) along the way. And one of the teachers at this school has a fascinating secret…

4 Naruto

Nearly every anime fan has heard this name, even if they haven’t yet watched or read the series itself. One of the classic “Big Three” of Shonen (along with One Piece and Bleach), Naruto is the story of an ostracized boy named Naruto Uzumaki. He recently graduated ninja school, and his big dream is to become his village chief (Hokage) and become a great ninja everyone can adore and look up to. He starts from nothing and works his way up, and that story will sound familiar to fans of My Hero Academia.

3 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Although the hero brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric are not enrolled at “magic high school,” they are lovable rogues on a mission to repair their mangled bodies and atone for the grave sin of trying to revive the dead via alchemy. Along the way, they get wrapped up in a sinister and far-reaching plot to conquer the globe, and the villain and his minions are the stuff of nightmares. This anime features colorful characters, deep philosophical themes, and of course, cool magic battles.

2 Food Wars!

Now we return to the “magic high school” concept, but instead of Quirks or alchemy or jutsu, the students at Totsuki academy learn… how to cook elite cuisine! Meet Soma Yukihira, an upbeat and creative young chef who aspires to surpass his expert chef father and cook the best food you ever tasted. He’s a reckless and headstrong lead, not unlike Izuku Midoriya, and he makes as many enemies as he does friends. He’s also got a heart of gold, and will reach out a helping hand to anyone who needs it.

1 JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

This is another huge name you’ve probably heard, even if you haven’t tried the anime yet. In JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, we meet the Joestar family who, through the generations, battle the forces of evil. In 1880s England, Jonathan Joestar faces off against the vampire overlord Dio Brando, and in the 1980s, Jotaro Kujo (pictured) battles Dio and his minions once again. This series features stands, or physical avatars of a person’s combat prowess, and stand battles have to be seen to be believed. They rank among the most creative and intense Shonen action sequences of all.
