Harry Potter. Even the muggles of our world know the name, a muggle being a regular human without magic, but in this context, a muggle is someone who doesn’t appreciate the story of The Boy Who Lived.

Fans use these terms as a secret code to weed out the noobs. If you get the references, you understand how affecting these stories have been for many, and so are immediately welcomed into the club. Anyone who says they don’t like the franchise at all or haven’t tried reading the books or watching the films typically receive a gaze of sheer incredulity.

Whether you found love of Harry Potter through the books or the movies, it can be safely assumed that fans have found the internet to be a near-inexhaustible source of hilarity involving the magical franchise. “Potterheads” have had the chance to relate to the characters and fellow fans alike through the use of some frankly spectacular internet memes.

This list is certainly not in a particular order, and there’s also no denying that Harry Potter fans will find them much funnier than the average muggle would – the true fans who likely already know which Hogwarts house they would be sorted into. But for now, enjoy 15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand.

15 Ron Is Absolutely Baffled At The World

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

We’ve all been there: the tiny children of Aragog, Hagrid’s oldest friend who also happens to be a giant spider, lead the way for you and your best friend to walk into a massive spider nest to almost get eaten, only to be saved by an enchanted flying Ford Anglia. No? Just Ron?

This meme has been expertly used by many, whether they are daunted by a new school or job, are tweeting about a weird club they spent their Saturday in, or have just woken up from a nap that felt like eternity. Ron Weasley’s attitude throughout the first few films gave fans the impression that, although he was born and raised in the magical world, he had absolutely no understanding about it. He’s kind of better in the books, but not by much… we love him, though.

14 Dumbledore – Garbage Headmaster

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

Albus Wulfric Percival Brian Dumbledore is the Headmaster of Hogwarts who, despite his eccentricities, approaches his role with the utmost concern for the well being of his students. Said no-one ever.

When filling the role of Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher, he settles for Professor Quirrell – a nervous wreck of a man who happens to have the evil Lord Voldemort’s face sticking out of the back of his head, Gilderoy Lockhart – a narcissistic fraud who wipes the memories of better witches or wizards and makes their tales his own, Remus Lupin – who was actually the best of the bunch but also happened to be a werewolf, Mad-Eye Moody – a gruff, battle-scarred ex-Auror (dark wizard catcher) who turns out to be an imposter, Delores Umbridge – a sickly sweet and evil politician-type who approves of harsh, scarring punishments, or Severus Snape – the former follower of Voldemort who was playing double agent throughout the saga.

His vetting process definitely leaves a lot to be desired.

13 Double-Standard Detentions

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

Every single year at Hogwarts, the new first years are given a sort of induction lecture on their first night living in the castle. In the Great Hall, in front of everyone, Dumbledore states that the Forbidden Forest, true to its name, is completely and irrevocably forbidden to ALL students unless they would like to die a horrible death.

Psych! They totally punish students by sending them into the Forbidden Forest. In the Philosopher’s Stone, we get to see Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Malfoy accompany the half-giant Hagrid into the dark woods to help track down an injured unicorn. Oh, and it turns out not to be just an injury — the unicorn has been killed and its blood used to sustain what remains of Voldemort as he lives out his ghostly life in the back of Professor Quirrell’s head.

12 Scumbag Dumbledore

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

The Scumbag Steve meme has been used to depict behavior that is socially unethical and/or dishonest within a specific situation. Now, applying the Scumbag hat to Dumbledore is more apt than muggles will ever know. Within the Potter-verse, there exists a device called a “Time-Turner” which can allow its user to travel back in time, and affect the past.

Many of the characters within Harry Potter have experienced some sort of tragedy at some point in their lives, but Dumbledore maintains that this miracle device cannot be used to bring back a boy’s parents, but they can be used to save a Hippogriff called Buckbeak. As another absolutely scumbag move, Dumbledore and the Ministry of Magic also allow Hermione to use a Time-Turner to take more classes than hours in the day during her third year.

In fairness, The Prisoner of Azkaban actually sported a rather strong time-travel element, allowing Harry to travel back and save himself and his Godfather from having their souls sucked out by the guards of Azkaban prison: The Dementors.

11 Spam From Hogwarts

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

We all hate spam. The “unsubscribe” button is likely one of the most clicked buttons across the whole internet due to the absolute garbage we have all been sent at one point or another. But, for those who don’t know, mail sent to witches and wizards is delivered by owl post. Magical children around the United Kingdom receive a letter that has been expertly aimed through the letterbox by some of the most talented post-owls the world has ever seen. Think of the clean-up operation.

Of course, this isn’t real (it’s real to us!) and we don’t get anything as enchanting as owls delivering spectacular letters telling us we’re more special than we previously knew. However, if this was the case, maybe we wouldn’t mind receiving spam so much. Perhaps the odd marketing message from stores on Diagon Ally or Hogsmeade, coupons for Honeydukes or Zonko’s Joke Shop. Drink deals from The Three Broomsticks pub, perhaps. We can dream.

10 Hogwarts: A History (Channel)

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

The Ancient Aliens Guy, Giorgio Tsoukalos, has embraced his continued meme fame, claiming that it shows that he has the best fans in the world. Realistically, it’s probably because he was a television personality who was placed on the History Channel, claiming that ancient alien astronauts interacted with early humanity. Wild claims, to say the least, with the meme being used in a similar context.

Luna “Loony” Lovegood is arguably one of the most beloved characters in Harry Potter, but her claims are equally as wild, relatively speaking. One such claim is about the existence of the Nargle – a mischievous creature that lives in mistletoe and thrives on thievery. Luna and her father, Xenophilius, both claim to have confirmed their existence, chalking certain “unexplained” events up to being caused by nargles, and that the only way to keep them away is to wear a Butterbeer cork necklace.

We love you, Luna, but you sure are loony.

9 Mean Witches

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

In a brilliant crossover meme, the worlds of Harry Potter and Mean Girls collide in one screenshot of Voldemort and his Death Eaters from Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows part 1. The meme is particularly used by fans of the Harry Potter franchise and sent to their muggle friends.

The famous words “You can’t sit with us” is screeched in Mean Girls when Rachel McAdams’ character, Regina George, tries to sit with her own clique on a Wednesday while wearing track pants. Social suicide, to be sure.

Although, if old Voldy decrees that you can’t sit with them at their table, then you’re likely to be served up as the main course for his massive pet snake, Nagini, much like Muggle Studies Professor, Charity Burbage. It’s difficult to decide which would be more serious.

8 Soulless Ron

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

This one doesn’t take a genius, to be fair. It’s no secret, gingers have no souls. Of course, they probably do. Maybe… Although it wasn’t something that was up for debate until the Gingers Have Souls Guy.

As we also found out in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Dementors are known for sucking the soul out of their victims, turning them into a husk in a fate worse than death. With Ron being a ginger, if a Dementor came across him, he’s likely to be completely unaffected by the creature. The joke within meme is also thoroughly debunked in The Deathly Hallows, when Dementors chase Harry, Ron, and Hermione through the lower levels of the Ministry of Magic.

Disclaimer: Gingers probably have souls, if the soul exists, but that’s a debate for another time.

7 Electrifying Pun

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

In one of the most famous lines from the entire series, books and films, Harry is made aware of the existence of the magical world and his connection to it by the groundskeeper of Hogwarts. Hagrid finds Harry living with his last remaining relatives on an island as they try to escape their nephew’s true destiny.

Big ol’ Hagrid, true to his size and nature, busts down the door of their island escape to deliver Harry’s birthday cake and deliver the spectacular news that he is born into magic and he will be studying at Hogwarts, learning to wield his abilities. The original:

“Yer a wizard, Harry.”

“I’m a what?”

Of course, the pun is much too easy, but this makes it no less enjoyable.

6 Woke Weasleys

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

Fred and George Weasley are Ron’s older brothers. The troublesome twins are known around Hogwarts for their love of practical jokes, Quiddich (the wizarding sport), and rebelling against authority.

In their first year at Hogwarts, they stole the Marauder’s Map from Caretaker Filch’s office. This is an extra special, enchanted map that allows those who possess it to see a map of Hogwarts like no other – providing live movements of all of the castle’s occupants. The rub is that, in the Prisoner of Azkaban, it is revealed that Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers, was secretly a shape-shifted Peter Pettigrew all along.

The twins, being in possession of this map, and using it regularly for almost 4 years before gifting it to Harry, must have seen that Ron was snuggled up to Pettigrew for all of Ron’s 3 years at Hogwarts up to that point and didn’t say a thing about it. Maybe it was neglectfulness, but we’d like to think it was a complete acceptance of their younger brother’s preferences.

5 It Runs In The Family

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

“You have your mother’s eyes” has been one of the most frequent phrases Harry heard throughout the 7 books, with Harry and his mother, Lily, both being said to have striking green eyes. In the movies, however, Daniel Radcliffe has natural blue eyes, and after an allergic reaction to colored lenses, it was decided that Harry would continue to have blue eyes.

This meme is more perfect that any real fan can express because it is the only time in which they can really say that Harry and Lily had even slightly similar eyes. As recurrent collocation goes, it’s not the worst. When a character rhymes off the “you have your mother’s eyes” line, the dedicated fans perhaps don’t roll their eyes as much as Harry does, with his ‘skip to the end’ attitude to the sentiment.

4 You Don’t Say?!

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry’s name is entered into the Goblet, which picks the participants for the Tri-Wizard Tournament, but we all know that. We’re true fans!

The meme, however, may not be understood as well by the younger contingent of Potterheads. In the 1988 horror comedy, Vampire’s Kiss, Nicholas Cage’s now famous facial expressions were at their weirdest. So weird, in fact, that the frozen image of his sarcastic-looking mug has been immortalized in a way even a vampire can’t match – in meme. The “you don’t say” meme is used particularly in reply to statements that are so obvious that the speaker has to be made aware of their stupidity.

In the Goblet of Fire, the first Tri-Wizard task sees the participants go up against a dragon. Hermione yells this golden nugget of advice to a distressed Harry as he cowers behind a boulder, hidden from the oncoming dragon fire. Hmm… Maybe it wasn’t so obvious to Harry. He can be a bit dim, sometimes.

3 We Go Here

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

Professor Snape was always a bit of a douchebag to Harry and his friends, not only because they were always drawn to danger and he was a teacher at the school, but also because he harbored many unrequited feelings for Harry’s mother, whom he was friends with before she met his father, James. Sour grapes, we feel.

Severus, being judged by the students as evil and always out to get them, was always a great fountain of sass throughout the first 3 parts of the story, before it was revealed he was a former Death Eater and that the kid’s suspicions of him weren’t too far-fetched. The books sometimes saw some of the children give as good as they got in sass department, but the films didn’t show much of this.

This meme provides a foul-mouthed alternative to the realities within the book and movie universes, with a retort that would likely have remained as famous as Harry himself, had it been uttered in canon.

2 Buy All The Candy

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

To sum up, Harry: you’re a wizard, your parents were killed with a magic curse shot by perhaps the most evil wizard in history, and you’ve inherited their fortune in a wizarding currency that is housed in a bank that’s run by goblins. Got that? Be responsible, now. Don’t make us regret allowing a 12-year-old child, who has just discovered he is magical, access to untold wealth.

NOPE, I’m gonna blow it all on candy! I’m THE BOY WHO LIVED!

Okay, it’s maybe a total exaggeration. Harry actually was relatively frugal with his newfound wealth, and when he was overspending, it was mostly to help his friends enjoy life a little more than their wallets allowed – like buying the whole sweet trolley on the train on his first trip to Hogwarts for his new friend and he to enjoy. So we tip our wizard cap to you, Potter. You’re the real MVW.

1 Exams? What’re Those?

15 Hilarious Harry Potter Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

Every schoolkid dreams of getting to that point in the school year, when exams are looming, and some sweeping authority to hold a grand assembly to announce that they have all been cancelled, JUST BECAUSE!

Well, that was quite a common occurrence during the tenure of Albus Dumbledore. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in light of a great big dirty old snake called the Basilisk stalking the castle and petrifying students with its reflected gaze, Dumbledore decides that, when everyone is saved and the Basilisk killed by Harry, all end of year exams are cancelled. You have to feel for those who just got their head down and studied throughout the year in spite of these events. Those poor, poor Ravenclaws. All that work, wasted, just because of a view immobilized students and the looming death and eventual saving of Ginny Weasley.

Surely there are dozens of other great Potter memes out there. Sound off with your favorites in the comments!
