British independent distributor Arrow Films has been bringing fans of cult cinema underseen gems and spit-shined versions of beloved classics since 1991, and now they’ve gone digital with the Arrow Video Channel.
With the distributor’s beautifully restored catalog of features now at horror fans’ fingertips, Arrow Video Channel has joined the growing number of streaming services catering to film fans whose tastes tend toward the weird and outrageous. Listed here are the ten best flicks that horror fans need to stream right now on the brand new service.
10 The Baby (1973)
Ann Gentry (Anjanette Comer) is a social worker assigned to an extremely strange case, that of the Wadsworth Family, made up of sisters Germaine, Alba, their mother (Ruth Roman) and their brother, Baby: a full-grown man with the mental capacity of a small child who sleeps in a crib. Ann takes a profound interest in Baby, but are her intentions as pure as they seem?
Ted Post’s politically incorrect sickie sheds it exploitation trappings to emerge as a deliberate and effective shocker the effect of which lingers long after the credits roll.
9 Sister Street Fighter (1974)
When her brother, an undercover cop, is abducted, Koryu (Etsuko Shiomi) sets out to locate and save him. The young Kung-fu fighter enlists the help of her former master, Hibiki (Sonny Chiba), and the duo take on an army of martial arts masters to reach her brother.
This spin-off of Sonny Chiba’s Street Fighter films offer up the same martial arts action and B-movie thrills, with a sensational female leading lady who kicks serious ass.
8 The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
En route to California, an All-American family strands themselves in their motorhome somewhere in the desert. As they grow increasingly concerned that no one will find them, a bigger threat emerges in a pack of cannibals who descend upon the travelers in a night of mayhem.
One of horror master Wes Craven’s best-regarded earlier works, The Hills Have Eyes remains a tough-as-nails portrait of civility pushed to its breaking point.
7 Blood Rage (1987)
In what is perhaps the single thanksgiving-set slasher, Terry (Mark Soper) is shocked to find out that his twin brother Todd (also Mark Soper) has escaped from the nearby mental institution. The twist? Terry framed his brother for the brutal murder he committed years earlier, and has been pretending to be a good, upstanding citizen ever since, but that may all change when Todd arrives to spoil the Turkey Day festivities.
With its holiday setting, inventive gore setpieces, and some wildly entertaining performances (Louise Lasser is a highlight as the twins’ mother), golden-era slashers don’t get better than Blood Rage.
6 Hellraiser (1987)
When Larry (Andrew Robinson) and his unfaithful wife, Julia (Clare Higgins) move into Larry’s late brother Frank’s old house, they inadvertently reanimate the dead man via an accidental bloodletting. Alive, but in a weakened state, Frank (Sean Chapman) convinces Julia to bring him unsuspecting victims to suck dry to rebuild his physical form. But with Larry’s daughter Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) and a cabal of trans-dimensional demons sniffing about, it’s only a matter of time before Frank and Julia’s diabolical scheme implodes.
Disgusting and smart in equal measure, Hellraiser, Clive Barker’s directorial debut, is a bonafide classic from one of horror’s seminal visionaries.
5 Brain Damage (1988)
Brian (Rick Hearst) finds his life upended when he comes into possession of Aylmer (voiced by John “The Cool Ghoul” Zacherle), a smooth-talking parasite. Aylmer demands fresh brains to consume in exchange for the hallucinogenic substance he produces, and soon Brian is addicted, leading him down a dark path.
Frank Henenlotter’s colorful 42nd street creature features must be seen to be believed, and Brain Damage has made many a viewer of a lifelong addict of his peculiar brand of weird cinema.
4 Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)
After quitting her thankless TV gig, horror host Elvira sees an opportunity to strike out on her own and start her own Vegas stage show. Fate seems to be on her side when her great-aunt Morgana passes away, leaving her a hefty inheritance that’s sure to help finance her show. But when she comes to collect the dough, she finds herself at odds with the buttoned-down residents of Fallwell, Massachusetts and shackled with a rundown mansion, dusty old spellbook, and a nasty poodle.
Casandra Peterson’s Elvira character is an American icon, and though her first and only proper big-screen effort was hobbled by the bankrupting of its distributor, it’s a hilarious cult-classic that preserves her humor and appeal for generations to come.
3 Society (1989)
Bill Whitney (Billy Warlock) has always felt out-of-place in his affluent Beverly Hills community and own family, but his paranoia reaches a new level when he receives a mysterious tape that seems to incriminate those closest to him in a bizarre, cultish orgy. Billy makes it his mission to uncover just what his friends, neighbors, and loved ones are up to, but the grotesque truth is beyond anything he could imagine.
Underrated director Brian Yuzna’s body-horror opus, Society features one of the most unforgettable (and repulsive) climaxes in cinematic history that has to be seen to be believed.
2 The Woman (2011)
Captured while bathing herself in a lake, a feral woman (Pollyanna McIntosh) becomes the pet project of an All-American family who tries to civilize her, but her presence exposes the brutality and depravity that lurk beneath their happy facade.
A still-controversial film from modern master of horror Lucky McKee that has only grown more polarizing in the past decade, The Woman is a character-driven thriller with nothing but bile for old fashioned, American “values.”
1 Why Don’t You Just Die? (2018)
Matvey (Aleksandr Kuznetsov) shows up at his girlfriend’s parent’s apartment intending to punish her father, Andrey (Vitaliy Khaev) for his past sins against his beloved, but things don’t go according to plan, when the patriarch turns out to be a far more capable opponent than Matvey first realized.
Kirill Sokolov’s single-room thriller is equal parts Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright, with a uniquely Russian blackly-comic streak.
