The show had such a dedicated fanbase that it has proven to be tough to replace, with people often just reliving the series and recommending it to more people.
However, there are other shows out there that even the most diehard PLL fans will find some enjoyment in. From Riverdale to You to Big Little Lies, there are a lot of great television shows out there that you might even like more than Pretty Little Liars.
15 Riverdale
If you want to watch a teen drama with crazy killers and lots of secret-keeping, all condensed in a small town — then look no further than Riverdale. That said, Riverdale is much darker than Pretty Little Liars, both in the literal sense and in its subject matter.
It often veers dangerously close to supernatural territory and has everything from cults to multiple serial killers. That said, it should be a great fit for anyone who misses the wilder storylines on Pretty Little Liars, after all, that was a show with its own fair share of nightmarish material.
14 The Vampire Diaries
Don’t let the fact that there are vampires, witches, and all things supernatural put you off from giving this a try. This has all of the same elements that people love about PLL and therefore there is no reason why this show couldn’t be enjoyed all the same.
While it is certainly a little bit darker due to the fact it is about vampires, that doesn’t stop this show from being incredibly gripping. There are secrets, there are characters to hate and to love, and it is just as easy to be sucked in and addicted to.
13 Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars share a lot of similarities thanks to both series centering around teens whose lives are dramatically altered by an unseen presence who seems to know everything. The major difference is that Gossip Girl has substantially less murder and psychological torture. However, Gossip Girl and A do share striking similarities.
Both are a guiding force for scandal and drama throughout the entirety of the show. That said, finding the identity of Gossip Girl isn’t as big of a deal on the Manhattan-based show as finding A is on PLL.
12 American Vandal
While the focus and topic of American Vandal are quite comical, the serious tone that the show takes makes this a lot of fun to watch. It leans more to the comedy side but the high school environment and the secrets that take place within it are things that Pretty Little Liars fans will absolutely enjoy.
It’s so much fun to watch, and while there are only two seasons, it is easy to become sucked into this world of mystery poos and graffiti. One of the big hooks for PLL was the secrets that the show had, and American Vandal is based all around them as a plot device, making it ideal.

You is the kind of show you would get if Pretty Little Liars was entirely made from A’s perspective. You stars Penn Badgely as an unnerving “nice” guy who is actually a terrifying and murderous stalker.
Sometimes Pretty Little Liars veered close to horror territory but You definitely lives there. Living inside the mind of a sociopathic killer like Joe is enough to make your skin crawl. The worst part is, most of the time, he truly believes he is a good guy and that the people he’s tormenting deserve what they get.
10 Big Little Lies
Big Little Lies often gets jokingly compared to Pretty Little Liars since their titles are almost perfect parallels of each other. Big Little Lies is a much more adult show and is often considered one of the best on HBO. It has been nominated for numerous awards and even won some of them, including an Emmy Award for Nicole Kidman and Alex Skarsgard.
Big Little Lies is the type of show you’ll want to watch when you get sick of the nonsensical storylines and massive plot holes in Pretty Little Liars. If you need something a little more grounded and better written, don’t miss out on the HBO series and read the book it’s based on, too, if you get the chance.

13 Reasons Why is a very dark and bracingly realistic teen drama (at times) on Netflix. The series courted quite a bit of controversy during its run due to the graphic nature of violence it shows toward its young characters.
It deals heavily with suicide, sexual abuse, rape, homophobia, and just about everything else you can think of. Some people like the show, others feel that it glorifies some of its darker themes. But there is something addicting about it, and it presents a much different approach to the teen drama than most others on the air.
8 The Fosters
The Fosters is an entertaining family drama that follows a group of foster kids adopted by a lesbian couple named Lena and Stef. The series is known for its diversity and its intriguing storylines.
Most people who watch the series can find something to relate to or a character they seem themselves reflected in. Once you’re done with The Fosters, you can even move on to its successful spin-off series, Good Trouble, which is still airing on Freeform.
7 Dexter
While Dexter isn’t for the fainthearted as it is slightly more violent than most shows on this list, the overall story is one PLL fans would relish. The secrets that Dexter himself keeps and the moral compass he lives by are things that Pretty Little Liars fans would appreciate.
There’s mystery, romance, violence, and plenty of secrets, all of which build up to a really strong show overall. While some moments in Dexter did fall slightly flat, for the most part this is a brilliant show that is worth a viewing.
6 Dynasty
Dynasty is a family drama, unlike Pretty Little Liars, but the amount of scandal and crazy plots are very similar to what you’ve seen on PLL. Dynasty follows the story of the Carrington family legacy and their convoluted schemes.
A lot of the show focuses on Fallon Carrington, played excellently by Elizabeth Gillies. She’ll remind you a little bit of the old-school Alison DiLaurentis. Plus the show has catfights galore and plenty of soap opera-style twists and turns.
5 The Returned
The Returned is another fantastic series that Pretty Little Liars fans should absolutely jump on if they have the chance. Set in one small town, the characters are fantastically well written, and much like PLL, people who are presumed dead end up making a grand reappearance.
This show is just as gripping with a real element of mystery running through the entire series, which is one of the reasons PLL was so popular. This show might not be quite as grand or polished, but it is certainly worthy of a watch.
4 How To Get Away With Murder
How to Get Away with Murder is probably a show that many of the characters on Pretty Little Liars would have benefitted from since murder is a key factor in the former Freeform series. But if you haven’t seen HTGAWM yet then you’re missing out.
Viola Davis is a powerhouse and the show was created by Shonda Rhimes, who is known as the queen of creating captivating twists and turns. Davis plays the seductive and brilliant law professor and criminal defense attorney Annalise Keating. The show follows her and her selection of students to work closely with her on special cases as dark truths are slowly revealed.
3 The Bold Type
The Bold Type is another series on Freeform that has a similar vibe to Pretty Little Liars although it leans more into the drama, it doesn’t have the thriller elements found in PLL. The Bold Type focuses on a group of women that works at a global women’s magazine called Scarlet.
It features several LGBTQ+ characters and has a strong core focusing on female friendship as the characters try to find their voices, identities, and even love. It was inspired by the real-life magazine editor named Joanna Coles, who also works on the show.
2 Veronica Mars
Much like Pretty Little Liar, Veronica Mars has a true cult following who pushed hard to keep the show alive. With Kristen Bell bringing her absolute best to the role, the show is gripping right from the start. With Veronica trying to deal with as many mysteries as possible in her town, the number of secrets are high as she works through different issues.
The show has some amazing characters who are all written fantastically well. With a lot of things happening that are slightly over the top, there are elements that aren’t to be taken seriously, but it is a fantastic series.
1 Desperate Housewives
Desperate Housewives is extremely similar to Pretty Little Liars in a lot of ways, except it follows an adult cast that lives in a quintessential American suburb behind white picket fences on Wisteria Lane.
Even though the show doesn’t have an ‘A’ figure, it has plenty of dark secrets, murder plots, and sordid tales and affairs. It’s just as soapy and addicting as Pretty Little Liars and it was extremely popular when it aired on ABC, it became an international success.
