15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad opens on August 5, and after a year of endless superhero sequels—some good, some bad—a movie about a randy group of supervillains either sounds totally exhausting, or totally needed.

Suicide Squad, of course, continues the world building of the DC Extended Universe that began with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. The premise: while Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and all the mayhem in Gotham & Metropolis have captured the attention of the world, the US government has grown concerned over the sudden number of superpowered beings running around in tights. Well, who wouldn’t?

To respond to the ever growing threat of superhuman power, government agent Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) begins to assemble a team of villains to be used as a “suicide squad” in case of a superhero emergency. If that seems like a bad idea, well, chances are, it is. But after a year of superhero sequels—a bombardment of them almost to the point of exhaustion—how to prepare for Suicide Squad?

That’s why we’re here. In the days leading up to Suicide Squad’s release, try out these quirky tricks to cleanse the palate of the year’s preceding film slate, and to get into the mood for the worst heroes ever.

Here are 15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad!

15 Rewatch all the Justice League cartoons

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

The DC Animated Universe remains the gold standard of TV superhero fare (sorry Arrowverse fans). Beginning with Batman: The Animated Series and continuing on through Justice League Unlimited, the DCAU raised the bar on storytelling via animation and introduced new generations to the adventures of DC Comics. What better way to prep for a DC movie then by revisiting the best incarnation of the DC universe to date! Do a marathon: start with Batman and go all the way up to the final episodes of Justice League Unlimited. Let’s face it: it’s better than half the junk on TV today!

Rewatching the DCAU shows also solves a practical issue: not all the characters in Suicide Squad are that well known. A review of the DCAU will help recall the specifics of characters like Captain Boomerang or Deadshot. It also gives a nice primer on Amanda Waller, and her habit of creating extraordinarily dangerous situations for herself and just about anyone else. Harley Quinn also made her first appearances in Batman: The Animated Series before her character proved so popular the comic book writers decided to add her to the continuing adventures of the Joker. Seeing Harley in her initial incarnation will provide some interesting context to Margot Robbie and the live action Suicide Squad’s take on the character.

14 Revisit every DC movie ever … even the bad ones … then take a sanity test

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Also of use before viewing Suicide Squad: rewatching all the previous outings for live action DC fare. Start with Batman: The Movie, the big-screen spinoff of the campy ’60s TV show, and continue all the way up to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Not only will it just be a good time for fans of DC heroes, but it will also give some interesting perspective on the evolution of the DC heroes, and the evolution of the superhero film genre. Things have come a long way since the 1960s in terms of scope, budget, tone and, well, just about everything else, too!

So why the sanity test? Let’s face it, not all the DC movies are good. In fact, some are godawful. Rewatching the entire DC film catalog will involve suffering through Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, Supergirl, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Steel, Green Lantern, Jonah Hex and a few more divisive entries that continue to drive fans up the wall. Should one survive said screening of such sub-par cinematic efforts, no doubt his sanity will have suffered. Who knows, though? Maybe the newly acquired crazy will qualify formerly-sane viewers for a real world suicide squad!

13 Do a shot for every time Lex Luthor eats a Jolly Rancher in BvS

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Okay, so maybe rewatching every DC movie ever made isn’t for everybody. In fact, it really isn’t necessary to enjoy Suicide Squad, even if it is the best way to go crazy enough to qualify as a member. Viewers should, however, revisit Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to at least recap the story so far and get brought up to speed for where the action picks up with Suicide Squad. Besides, with the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman adding a lot more in terms of character and continuity to the film, it might help clear up a few of the muddled plot points.

Here’s a fun activity to make it through the new three-hour runtime, particularly for those who found the movie somewhat lacking on the first go. Every time Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor eats a Jolly Rancher, do a shot. Now, Lex eats quite a few Jolly Ranchers over the course of the movie, so doing shots of vodka or Jägermeister isn’t recommended for those viewers actually wanting to survive the movie without liver failure. Maybe try to keep things themed: have some low-alcohol, fruit flavored pucker to simulate the candy taste and to avoid alcohol poisoning. Hell, replace it with juice if you want to.

12 Visit the reptile house at the zoo

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Killer Croc makes his big screen debut in Suicide Squad, so in honor of the scaly villain, why not go visit some of nature’s reptilian rogues at your local zoo? After all, they live in captivity and could probably use the company!

The Killer Croc of Suicide Squad is a cannibal, according to Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, the actor who plays the role. While we here at Screen Rant cannot advise any reader to actually resort to cannibalism, we can suggest staying in the reptile house to watch the crocodiles and their gator cousins feed. It’s a shocking sight; one that can provide some great inspiration before heading in to see the new movie.

Speaking of movies, while visiting the reptile house make sure to check out all the other residents too. Reptiles have a way of turning up as villains in comic books, so any additional research will likely pay off later. Checking in on the lizards will no doubt pay off in future Spider-Man films. Watching some cobras will add perspective to G.I. Joe, and seeking out the copperhead snakes could pay off in a Suicide Squad sequel. A little reptile education never hurt anyone, and since zoos are public institutions, you might as well check out the fruits of tax dollars at work!

11 Dress goth in honor of Enchantress … and go to work

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Cara Delevingne plays Enchantress in the new Suicide Squad movie, and her character will first introduce magic into the DC Extended Universe. No telling how including something as wild as sorcery and all the science fiction elements will play out over several films, though using Enchantress to present the element should provide some interesting twists.

Enchantress is the alter ego of June Moore, an artist who stumbles upon an evil, magical presence known as the Enchantress. The two merge, allowing June use of magic—and the Enchantress persona to take control of her body. In the comics, June morphs from a perky blond to the raven-headed, black-clad Enchantress whenever she invokes her powers.

In honor of the character, why not go a bit goth? Once upon a time, goth fashion was all the rage, courtesy of a rise in popularity of shock rock groups like Marilyn Manson, and bewitching films like The Craft. The latter inspired teens everywhere to don black leather and dark lipstick as a manifestation of their hormonal angst. Enchantress may well popularize goth fashion again, so get ahead of the curve by putting on some dark make-up, some black clothes, and channeling your dark side.

10 Wear a boomerang as a fashion accessory

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Along with Enchantress and Killer Croc, the Flash villain Captain Boomerang will make his debut in Suicide Squad, played by actor Jai Courtney.

Fans note Boomerang’s abrasive personality in the comics, something actor Courtney has said will translate into the film. The actor refers to him as a “bogan;” that is, the Australian slang term for a lower class lowlife with bad manners. The character possesses incredible skill with—you guessed it—a boomerang, and sports several different varieties weaponized with different properties. In the past, Boomerang has used bladed boomerangs, explosive boomerangs, flaming boomerangs and even electrified models. He usually carries them in a special satchel for easy access during a fight. Boomerang joins the Suicide Squad in exchange for a pardon from previous crimes, though he never quite put aside his villainous impulses, or, for that matter, served as an effective member of the team.

Rather than adopt Boomerang’s less-than-charming personality traits, why not just sport a real boomerang as a fashion statement? Wear one as a necklace, or dangle one from your belt. If people ask, just tell them you’re channeling your inner supervillain.

9 Roast marshmallows and pretend you’re El Diablo

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Jay Hernandez plays El Diablo in Suicide Squad, a former gang member with many skeleton tattoos. He also has the gift of pyrokenisis by powers unknown. For those unfamiliar with the term, pyrokenisis allows a person to burst into and control spontaneous flames. Hernandez describes the character as a reluctant hero—the kind of guy who just wants to go home and go to bed rather than run around fighting crime with his magical powers.

He makes El Diablo sound kind of cuddly, doesn’t he?

El Diablo just wants to forget about his criminal past and future, and go home to the quiet. In that vein, why not do something sweet to channel El Diablo’s gentle side. Go roast marshmallows! Get some friends together along with a few pointy sticks, tell stories around the fire, roast some marshmallows (s’mores optional) and have a relaxing night. Barring ownership of a grill, starting a fire in an oil drum would also work, or possibly roasting marshmallows over a stove burner. Said snackage could also come in handy for a break in a marathon review of the DC Animated Universe or the DCEU.

8 Martial arts movie marathon to bone up those Katana skills

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

On the subject of movie marathons—in case our suggestions of revisiting the DCAU or past DC movies isn’t enough to make your bottom ache—check out some classic martial arts movies in honor of the character Katana. She makes her debut in Suicide Squad too.

Actress Karen Fukuhara will take up the sword and don the mask for the role of Tatsu Yamashiro, the martial arts vigilante who goes by the codename Katana. Her comic backstory holds that Karen saw her husband and children die at the hands of her brother in law, and ever since, vowed to fight injustice all over the world. In addition to her martial arts proficiency, Katana also wields a magical sword that allows her to commune with every soul it kills. Whether or not Katana’s sword has the same powers in the Suicide Squad movie remains to be seen.

To commune with Katana’s story, check out some Bruce Lee classics like Enter the Dragon for inspiration. More recent hits like Crouching Tider, Hidden Dragon, Kung Fu Hustle and the Kill Bill films would also help inspire.

7 Talk aloud to the voices inside your head in public

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Okay, who doesn’t talk to himself every now and again? In honor of the crazies in Suicide Squad—and there are a few, including the much-beloved character Harley Quinn—why not just talk to yourself aloud?

Harley started life as the brilliant psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Arkham Asylum’s resident evaluator of psychopaths. She ended up falling in love with the Joker, who managed to torture her into becoming a crazypants like him. Her subsequent violent madness made her totally unpredictable, and her dysfunctional relationship with the Joker earned her the reputation of a supervillainess.

In fact, talking to the voices could be a lot of fun in a Jackass kind of way. Try walking into a public place like a drugstore or restaurant and have a friend start filming via cameraphone. Then start arguing with the voices. Let it get heated! Have the friend capture your performance and the reactions of passers by. It should be good for a laugh!

6 Wear bright red lipstick for a day

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

The Joker needs no introduction, though given that Suicide Squad will mark Jared Leto’s debut in the part, fans should note that his Joker has a very different backstory from any to grace the screen before. Based on information from Batman v Superman, and publicity materials surrounding Suicide Squad, this Joker has a long past fighting Ben Affleck’s Batman. Like Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Batman, Leto’s clown prince fell into a vat of acid that gifted him his strange appearance, and like Heath Ledger’s in The Dark Knight, Leto’s Joker enjoys hands-on violence. He also was responsible for the death of Batman’s sidekick, Robin.

Rather than run out and get a bunch of tattoos, to get in touch with your inner Joker, why not wear some bright red lipstick in homage to the Joker’s grin? A good shade of fire engine red should do the trick. Men, don’t let wearing makeup impugn your masculinity! Should anyone question your reasons for wearing lipstick, just ask if anyone wants to see your toys!

5 Listen to the soundtrack on an endless loop

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad boasts one of the best and most unusual soundtracks of any superhero film since the original Batman. For starters, it includes some original work from Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons—a musical suicide squad if ever there was one! Their collaborative track “Sucker for Pain” has already earned strong critical notice.

The soundtrack also includes two high profile covers of two popular songs. The first, a reimagining of “You Don’t Own Me” performed by singer Grace has already seen heavy radio play. The second, Panic at the Disco’s cover of “Bohemain Rhapsody,” which stays close to the original recording by Queen. As an added bonus, the haunting cover of the BeeGee’s “I Started a Joke,” which featured in trailers performed by ConfidentialMX, also lands on the album.

Listening to a soundtrack album is always a great way to get in the mood for a film, and one that featured reimagined popular songs offers a hint of the characters. To get into the headspace, start the soundtrack album, press the repeat button, and go about your day.

4 Practice a maniacal laugh

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Every great villain should have a great maniacal laugh, and given that both the Joker and Harley Quinn show up in Suicide Squad, a mad-crazy laugh is a must.

Heath Ledger spent time living alone in a hotel room to perfect the Joker’s mad laugh for The Dark Knight. Jared Leto took a similar immersive approach (more on that in a moment), staying in isolation, reading up on shamanism and listening to 1920s gospel music, all of which is enough to make anyone crazy.

Granted, the cast of Suicide Squad, according to reports, had a psychiatrist on set at all times to battle the craziness. Since most people reading this list right now probably don’t have access to one quite as easily, instead of drifting into the mind of a psychopath, why not just watch some fun YouTube clips to begin practicing the crazy laugh.

3 Send someone you love a pig carcass

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

As we already mentioned, Jared Leto went to some crazy lengths to get into character as the Joker in Suicide Squad. The actor decided early on to take the radical step of staying in character whenever on set. Co-star Will Smith later said he never actually met Jared Leto until after filming—on set he was the Joker.

Viola Davis echoed Smith’s sentiments, claiming that she almost had her former football player husband attack Leto! The actor also became known for sending bizarre gifts to co-stars which included anal beads and used condoms. During a read-through, Leto sent on-screen girlfriend Margot Robbie a pig carcass filled with bullets! She also later reported he sent her live rats as well.

To celebrate and prepare for the on-screen romance between Harley Quinn and the Joker, why not mail your special someone a pig carcass too! A fine, plump pig carcass should send a very clear message of love.

2 Get your teeth done, Joker style

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

Jared Leto’s Joker looks unlike any previous incarnation of the character thus far on TV, in film, or anywhere else. Director David Ayer and Leto worked to create a new aesthetic for the character to differentiate him from the previous screen versions, as well as adjust him to a contemporary context. According to interviews, the two fixated on the work of filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, as well as the look of members of street gangs and Mexican drug cartels. One notable characteristic unique to Leto’s Joker: his teeth.

Many of The Joker’s pearly whites have been replaced by silver tooth caps, implying heavy drug habits, permanent scarring as a result of fights with Batman, or possibly both. Leto also met with real life psychopaths for his preparation.

Rather than meet with psychopaths, why not prep for Suicide Squad by getting a freaky grill just like the Joker? Don’t worry about the cost: metal tooth caps are generally the cheapest of any material, and maybe your dentist will even give you a discount if he gets to bash your teeth in himself!

1 Take a bath in a chemical vat

15 Ways To Get Ready For Suicide Squad

The Joker doesn’t have one set origin story, though similar themes of him being a chemical technician, having a murdered wife, and most important of all, falling into a chemical vat which bleached his skin and hair tend to creep up in every retelling. Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Batman fell into the vat, which became one of the most iconic and memorable scenes in the entire film.

Based on the scenes in the Suicide Squad trailer, Leto’s Joker fell into a chemical bath at one point too. That being the case, why not take the ultimate plunge to get excited and ready for Suicide Squad: take a bath in a chemical vat!

Now taking a bath in a vat of chemicals offers some obvious hazards…like bleached skin and green hair. Consider it advisable, then, to empty the chemicals out first, then get your splash on in the vat. Heck, add some bubble bath and have a hot tub party in the vat, complete with rubber duckies!*

*Once again, this article is satire. Please don’t go swimming in any chemicals.
