2016 Primetime Emmy Awards Winners List – Did Your Favorites Win

The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards have the chance to prove the television academy is more in touch with the TV landscape than it has seemed in previous years. Although the nominees are remarkably consistent with previous awards ceremonies, there are a number of welcome additions to the fold that help offset the repeat appearance of shows like Homeland, House of Cards, and Downton Abbey. This year has included newcomers Mr. Robot and lead actor Rami Malek, proving the power that zeitgeist-y shows can often have (and in this case deserve). Meanwhile, another not-so-zeitgeist-y show has finally made its way to the ceremony. After four seasons, FX’s The Americans is finally recognized with three key nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama.

While the notion of the series pulling off a deserved hat trick seems unlikely, the sight of Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys’s names among the list of nominees demonstrates a much-needed willingness by Emmy voters to deviate from the norm. There are still plenty of familiar contenders with a better shot at taking home Emmy gold – Game of Thrones seems primed for a repeat, while another win for Julia Louis-Dreyfus would surprise absolutely no one – but even small steps toward spreading the wealth around are appreciated.
