2021 Summer Box Office Up 893 Percent From 2020 But Still Far From 2019

Box office takings for Summer 2021 have risen by 893 percent when compared to 2020, but still pale in comparison to 2019’s takings, according to recent reports. 2021’s Summer theatrical releases included films such as Black Widow, F9, and A Quiet Place Part II. Summer 2021 saw theaters reopen following closures due to lockdowns put in place throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following delays, closures, and alternative release plans such as direct-to-streaming being introduced, theaters are finally reopening and screening the latest films once more. Much like many other parts of the entertainment industry such as concerts and stage shows, theaters were closed in order to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to studios scrambling to find alternative release strategies or hold back on big releases. Since restrictions are lifting and theaters are reopening, audiences have cautiously returned, leading to Shang Chi and the Ten Rings breaking Labor Day records at the box office. Despite optimism at the numbers, things are still far from pre-pandemic numbers.

According to Deadline (via Slashfilm), the estimated box office takings from the first weekend of May to Labor Day weekend totaled $1.75 billion domestically. This is 9 times the $176.4 million box offices took during the same period in 2020, which saw few theatrical releases outside of Christopher Nolan’s then much-anticipated Tenet, while films such as Artemis Fowl and Bill and Ted Face the Music alternatively dropped on streaming services. Despite impressive growth, 2021’s box office numbers still pale in comparison to 2019’s $11.3 billion in domestic box office takings.

Summer 2019 saw the release of many anticipated films such as Spider-Man: Far From Home, Toy Story 4, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, and Midsommar, but impressive box office numbers were not just down to quantity. Most notably, Summer 2019 saw the release of Avengers: Endgame, with the conclusion to Marvel’s Infinity Saga taking in $858.3 million at the box office, placing it second in all-time domestic box office records and surpassing James Cameron’s Avatar. Endgame was also joined by another notable release from The Walt Disney Company, The Lion King, which earned $592.5 million for Disney and placed it at 13th in all-time domestic box office records.

Though box office numbers may not be at the dizzying, record-shattering heights set by 2019’s blockbusters, it is nevertheless a promising sign for studios and theaters. Despite audience hesitation due to fears surrounding the Delta variant and most releases seeing simultaneous releases on streaming services, people are slowly but surely returning to theaters for the latest releases, and this will in-turn make studios more confident in releasing more of their major titles into theaters so long as they remain open. This can be seen with Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings, whose box office performance has inspired Disney to go ahead with Eternals’ November 5th theater-only release, as well as Sony moving up the release date of Venom: Let There Be Carnage by 2 weeks to October 1st. While moves such as simultaneous releases to streaming and shortened theatrical release windows have the potential to change the industry, these box office numbers show that theater still has a place within the modern movie watching experience.
