20Year Harry Potter Cast Reunion Isn’t Likely Says Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe has dashed any hopes for a 20th anniversary Harry Potter reunion. The first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, premiered in November of 2001, making this November the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the beloved film franchise. The franchise, which includes eight films in total, ended a decade later with The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.

Over the course of ten years, the Harry Potter franchise has birthed a large swath of notable cast alumnae, a massive international fanbase, and countless other intellectual properties from amusement parks to museums. The incredibly popular films—the final film being the 13th highest grossing film of all time—only further catapulted the admiration of J.K. Rowling’s original novels. Due to the intense fanfare surrounding the global pop culture touchstone, there have been plenty of unofficial and (semi) official cast reunions. Most recently, the cast reunited during the Covid-19 pandemic to raise money for charity in a virtual event hosted and organized by Tom Felton, who portrayed Draco Malfoy.

However, in a recent interview with ET, Daniel Radcliffe, who famously played the titular character, cast doubt on the possibility of a 20-year Harry Potter reunion. Radcliffe, who is currently promoting Miracle Workers season 3, explained that he is currently filming in the Dominican Republic and then will be busy working on other projects throughout the year. Though the actor could see a general celebration happening, he was apologetic at the unlikelihood of there being a planned reunion of the cast. However, in better news, HBO Max is planning a quiz show and special to celebrate the anniversary. Read what Radcliffe said below:

“I’m in the Dominican Republic at the moment filming and then I’m going to be busy, kind of working on bits and pieces until the end of the year. So yeah, I don’t know. I’m sure there will be some sort of celebration but I don’t know if we will be getting together or anything. I’m sorry if that’s a bit of a disappointment to anyone.”

Radcliffe, of course, is not the only busy former Potter cast member. Considering just the three leading three cast members alone, Radcliffe currently stars alongside Steve Buscemi on the TBS anthology series, Miracle Workers, and is in the Dominican Republic filming the upcoming action romcom, Lost City of D, which also stars Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock. Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) currently stars in M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series, Servant, which just finished its second season earlier this year and was renewed for a third. Emma Watson’s (Hermione Granger) most recent acting role was in 2019’s critically acclaimed remake of Little Women, though Watson has also been heavily involved in various forms of activism throughout the years.

Though Harry Potter fans may be disappointed at the lack of a proper 20th anniversary reunion, they have much more to look forward to. A museum exhibit boasting recreated magic is touring beginning in 2022 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the books. The spin-off theater play, Harry Potter & The Cursed Child is expected to reopen sometime in 2022. The third release in the Fantastic Beasts spin-off franchise, which delayed filming due to the pandemic, is expected in 2022 as well. In addition, there’s almost always new Harry Potter content on the horizon, which may or may not include a rumored mysterious HBO Max project.
