2In1 Laptops To Get 5G & WiFi Upgrades With Qualcomms Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2

Future 2-in-1 laptops will soon be getting improved 5G and better connectivity in general, courtesy of Qualcomm. Besides the improvements to 5G connection speeds, the latest PC chip from Qualcomm also looks to offer better conference call quality, among other upgrades. Qualcomm has been quite busy lately, from showcasing its latest WearOS iteration, to now turning its attention towards its next-generation System-on-a-Chip PC processor.

The tech giant’s tiny and efficient ARM-based chips have proved popular due to their capabilities, even outperforming Intel’s x86 processors in benchmark results. The last-generation Snapdragon 8cx, Qualcomm’s SoC processor specifically designed for PCs, brought numerous improvements to laptop hybrids, including faster connectivity, improved battery life, and more. With certain internet providers phasing out last-generation connectivity options, now is the perfect time for Qualcomm to keep newer laptops up to speed.

According to Qualcomm, the latest 8cx iteration upgrades aid in making online work possible from virtually anywhere. The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 supports Wi-Fi 6, and is capable of “blazing fast” 5G connection speeds, increasing the cap of the previous gen’s 1-2 Gbps download speeds, to up to 7Gbps. Aside from connection speed upgrades, the latest SoC processor also brings enhancements to audio and video clarity as well. Just like with the previous version, the 8cx Gen 2 also promises significantly longer battery life, which is of course, still dependent on various factors. In terms of availability, Qualcomm says the expectation is the first devices utilizing the upgraded platform will arrive before the end of the year.

Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2’s Laptop Upgrades & Benefits

It’s clear that the improvements made with Qualcomm’s latest SoC platform puts a lot of emphasis on online productivity, which mostly benefits laptops used for business purposes. Its improved live-streaming capabilities, and support for up to 32-megapixel cameras and 4K HDR, will certainly result in a higher quality online communication experience, especially considering laptops are usually severely lacking in this department.

With the previous iteration already having revolved around an ‘Always Connected’ philosophy, its successor only tries to uphold that by improving connectivity standards. While it’s quite appropriate given the changing working conditions caused by the pandemic, some areas weren’t given as much priority as others. For example, in the GPU department. Its support for displays, including dual 4K monitors, also pretty much sounds like it has remained unchanged from the last version. However, in the current climate, any improvements that Qualcomm can make to laptop connectivity, 5G or otherwise, and communications are likely to be welcomed.
