So in a clever twist, Jim Carrey’s Robotnik showcases the origin of the mad scientist’s obsession with Sonic. He’s already unstable, so Sonic constantly beating him combined with his superiority complex makes him become more determined to catch the alien rodent.

Fans get to see Jim Carrey turn into an egg-shaped, bald-headed maniac with a ridiculously large mustache. His evolution as the more game-accurate villain will likely continue since Jim Carrey is returning for Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

5 Cable Guy: He’s A Tragic Villain

Robotnik talks about his rough upbringing, but it’s clear that from the first appearance, audiences are supposed to love to hate him. The Cable Guy is completely different, featuring flashbacks to his childhood with a neglectful mother who just let the television raise her son.

All the Cable Guy wants is a friend and at first, he is charming, despite some awkwardness. But he’s so desperate that he’s willing to go to the most extreme lengths to get that friend. From hurting others to manipulating events to destroying relationships, the Cable Guy is equally likable and sympathetic as he is despicable, giving a more three-dimensional character.

4 Robotnik: It Was A More Successful Movie

After the disastrous first trailer showed off a design for Sonic that fans all over the world despised, Paramount went ahead and fixed the design, delaying Sonic The Hedgehog from 2019 to 2020. This brought optimism and as thanks for their hard work, many people of all ages saw the final product.

As a result, Sonic The Hedgehog was not only a success but one of the most successful video game movies ever made. Jim Carrey’s Robotnik was praised as being the ultimate highlight of the film and everyone couldn’t wait for the sequel, whereas The Cable Guy was not loved on initial release and was only a mild box-office success.

3 Cable Guy: He’s Darker & Scarier

One of the more bold choices Ben Stiller made when directing The Cable Guy was to make the film swap genres. At first, it’s a dark comedy about an obsessive best friend, but in the second half, it evolved into a genuine horror thriller similar to the likes of Fatal Attraction.

It’s in this second half that Jim Carrey shines as a menacing presence on screen. He still adds some humor, but his character is an actual threat throughout, especially in the epic climax in which he and Matthew Broderick as Steven fight on top of a satellite dish.

2 Robotnik: He’s Pure Evil

As said prior, Robotnik is not someone to feel sympathy nor empathy for. From the second he shows up, Jim Carrey’s Robotnik is an egotistical maniac with a superiority complex who insults everyone and everything in his path.

While there is less of an emotional attachment to Robotnik, Jim Carrey hits a perfect balance of unlikable and eccentric with a lot of charisma. This makes Robotnik fun to watch during every single second he is on screen with Sonic and James Marsden’s Tom.

1 Cable Guy: The Movie Has A Cult Following

Over the years, The Cable Guy managed to live on as this underrated gem in Jim Carrey’s filmography. Over the years, more people have begun to rediscover and appreciate the dark comedy for being new and unique at a time when Jim Carrey was known for many similar comedic roles.

The movie’s impact would even be recognized on Saturday Night Live during the “Carrey Family Reunion” skit. In it, many famous Saturday Night Live cast members and guest stars dressed as many of Jim Carrey’s famous characters, including the Cable Guy.
