5 Avenger Villains Who Deserve Redemption (& 5 That Are A Lost Cause)

The Avengers wasn’t the first superhero team in Marvel Comics, but they have become the most popular thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout their existence, The Avengers faced world-threatening events and villains, but their rogues’ gallery is not as big as the members’ individual enemies.

The villains that show up regularly often fall short. Many never match up to the Avengers, existing to fall in defeat. However, there are other villains who brought something special, fans wanting them to find redemption. Others stepped over the line too many times to find a light at the end of the tunnel.

10 Redemption – Taskmaster

Black Widow finally brought Taskmaster to the MCU. Taskmaster is a villain who always gives the Avengers problems, appearing first in Avengers #195 by David Michelinie, George Pérez. He possesses photographic reflexes, mimicking all the Avengers’ fighting skills. However, he gained a chance at redemption, appearing in his own miniseries in 2021 where he had to clear his name for a murder he never committed. Taskmaster also created a great buddy comedy duo with Black Ant, with a new personality making him easy to cheer for.

9 Lost Cause – Thanos

In the MCU, Thanos believed in his actions. According to the Avengers’ villain, he needed to destroy half the living beings in the universe to save it, his own world dying because of overpopulation. Despite this, Thanos killing so many people pushed him past the line of redemption despite his beliefs. In the end, Thanos proved his own arrogance pushed him to the extreme. In the comics, it was worse because Thanos committed these sins to find love in Mistress Death, and even she found his actions repulsive.

8 Redemption – The Masters Of Evil

The Masters of Evil are the Avengers version of Spider-Man’s Sinister Six. These villains hated the Avengers and even beat the heroes in Avengers #273-277 by Roger Stern and John Buscema. However, the team later became heroes known as The Thunderbolts. It was a Baron Zemo ruse, but they enjoyed being heroes and enlisted Hawkeye to help them. Hawkeye led them and helped The Thunderbolts prove they deserved redemption in the end.

7 Lost Cause – Ultron

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark developed Ultron to help protect the Earth from all threats. In the comics, it was Hank Pym, but the reasons remained the same. In both cases, Ultron decided humans possessed the greatest threat to destroy the planet and set out to eliminate them.

Ultron is not a human, and his programming is in place. However, he also developed an advanced AI directive and became self-aware, making him even more dangerous. In the comics, a different version of Ultron attempted redemption, but the main Ultron will always remain evil.

6 Redemption – Phoenix Force

It might seem impossible for anyone only familiar with the Fox X-Men movies to consider the Phoenix Force deserves redemption. It is also confusing for non-comic book readers to understand why it is an Avengers villain. Before the X-Men existed, the Phoenix Force battled early iterations of Avengers from ancient times. In the new timeline, the Phoenix just forced the Avengers to battle to determine its next host. Maya Lopez ended up the new host, and she makes her MCU debut in Hawkeye. With Maya in control, Phoenix could become a force of good and find redemption for the destruction in its past.

5 Lost Cause – M.O.D.O.K.

When Marvel released M.O.D.O.K. on Hulu, it seemed the Avengers villain had a chance at redemption. That ended up not happening. In the end, M.O.D.O.K. gave up his family for his dreams of world domination. This is always the same for M.O.D.O.K., whose arrogance and greed drive him to make the wrong decisions repeatedly. Every time M.O.D.O.K. finds a chance at redemption, the villain sabotages it and this will likely never end.

4 Redemption – Baron Zemo

Can a Nazi terrorist find redemption in Marvel Comics? If he is anything like the MCU version, it is entirely possible. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier turned the terrorist who caused the deaths of countless people to become a fan favorite, while also making sure he ended up in prison on the Raft.

It is tougher in the comics. In the MCU, Baron Zemo wasn’t a Nazi but was a man who lost his wife and hated superheroes and villains. In the comics, he was a Nazi and one of Hydra’s most loyal lieutenants. However, Marvel has updated him in Non-Stop Spider-Man, and he seems changed for the better.

3 Lost Cause – Kang

Kang is a conqueror, much like Thanos, deserving redemption less than the Titan. The difference between Thanos and Kang is that Thanos committed his sins because of his desires, whether love or self-deluded sacrifice. Kang is a time traveler who only wants to rule the universe. There are good versions of Kang, including the Young Avengers’ Iron Lad, but even he proved Kang’s evil is inevitable, and there is no redemption for the cosmic terrorist.

2 Redemption – Kree/Skrull Empire

The Kree and Skrull Empires have changed since they first appeared in Avengers comics. The two alien races battled for years and their war threatened Earth. However, something huge happened when a new hero appeared on Earth named Hulkling. He learned his father was the legendary Kree, Captain Mar-Vell, and his mother a Skrull princess. Hulkling became the Emperor of the Kree-Skrull Alliance, bringing peace and a chance for redemption to both empires.

1 Lost Cause – Mephisto

The one Avengers villain incapable of redemption is the devil himself. There are many Marvel characters claiming to be the devil. However, the one most connected with being Marvel’s version of Satan is Mephisto. He has battled everyone from Doctor Strange to Ghost Rider and altered Spider-Man’s life. He is also a major Avengers villain, corrupting Agent Coulson and creating a new world the Avengers had to overcome. Mephisto is evil incarnate and will never find redemption.
