5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

Disney movies have many kinds of family structures including those with an adoptive mother. Some successfully fill the role of a great guardian and others fail miserably at every motherly instinct. Movie fans have complained about why Disney creates so many motherless storylines such as in Pocahontas, Beauty and The Beast, and The Little Mermaid.

There are many different family dynamics involved in Disney plots, and they are necessary for the stories to unfold the way they do. A common premise in Disney films is the involvement of a stepmother who either excels at being the best adoptive mother or is completely incompetent at the task.

10 Worst: Queen Narissa (Enchanted)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

An adoptive mother who really wished the worse for her stepson was Queen Narissa from Enchanted. She married Prince Edward’s father but after his death, she feared that her stepson would overthrow her and end her reign as queen.

Edward, who was madly in love with Giselle, suspects nothing from his evil stepmother, but all is soon discovered as Queen Narissa uses her black magic to try and lure Giselle to her death and shapeshifting abilities to turn herself into a fire-breathing dragon. She meets her doom at the end of the movie but not before convincing viewers that she is one of the worst adoptive mothers in Disney.

9 Best: Aunt Cass (Big Hero 6)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

The movie Big Hero 6 is a story that goes from sad tragedy to inspirational success. An incredibly supportive character that helps ease the depressive storyline is Aunt Cass. She is not only hardworking, but she always gives time, encouragement, and love to her nephews Hiro and Tadashi.

Her excitable personality really livens up the movie and fans will agree that she is easy to admire. For adopting her two nephews and raising them as her own despite not knowing anything about parenting and running a restaurant business, Aunt Cass is one of the best adoptive mothers in Disney movies.

8 Worst: Lady Tremaine (Cinderella)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

There is no room for doubt when acknowledging that Lady Tremaine is one of the worst stepmothers in Disney. After remarrying and adopting a young girl who was the same age as her own two daughters, the situation seemed perfectly fitting.

Cinderella’s father dies and Lady Tremaine’s true colors are revealed immediately. She behaves wickedly and treats Ella as a servant rather than a member of the family. She constantly crushes Cinderella’s hopes and dreams and forbids her from doing anything that might lead Cinderella to have any happiness or a better life.

7 Best: Perdita (101 Dalmatians)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

The movie 101 Dalmatians is a fun tale about dogs and their humans finding love and prevailing against evil murderers. The mother dog in the story Perdita gives birth to a litter of fifteen puppies. She embarks on a rescue mission to save her own litter from the creepy lair called Hell Hall where Cruella’s kidnapping henchmen are keeping the puppies, she then returns home with 84 extra puppies.

Pongo then suggests that they adopt them and Perdita takes on the task of caring for 101 Dalmatian puppies. She is a hero and shows commitment to her own babies as well as 84 other puppies that she refuses to leave behind.

6 Worst: Cindy Green (The Odd Life Of Timothy Green)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

Playing the role of a wife who dreams of having children is actress Jennifer Gardner. After being told that she is unable to conceive a child, Cindy Green and her husband are devastated. On pieces of paper, they write all the dreams and hopes they would want for their child if they could have one and bury them in a box outside.

That’s when a kid grows out of the ground claiming to be their son. What does Cindy Green do? She takes the kid as her own without question and raises him without caring where he really came from or if she is committing a crime or even if she is involving herself in child abduction. Eventually, the child vanishes and she is left childless once more. It’s safe to say that Cindy is one of the worst Disney adoptive mothers for her strange attachment to a random child and her refusal to follow child safety laws.

5 Best: Alcmena (Hercules)

The son of Zeus and Hera, Hercules is born. In the 1997 Disney release Hercules, the birth mother does not die but her son is kidnapped by Hades’ minions and an attempt is made on his life. 4 Worst: Queen Grimhilde (Snow White)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

Better known as The Evil Queen, Queen Grimhilde is one of the worst adoptive mothers in Disney Movies. From the very beginning of the story in Snow White, she is obsessed with her own beauty and even uses dark magic to assure herself of her beauty.

After her magic mirror lays out the truth to her that the young princess Snow White has surpassed the queen’s beauty, Queen Grimhilde’s jealousy consumes her. She does everything in her power including threatening a huntsman into bringing Snow White’s heart, a magic death-sash, an old hag transformation, and a poisoned apple. No other Disney stepmother has wanted to kill her adopted child in the worst agonizing ways more than Queen Grimhilde.

3 Best: Kala (Tarzan)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

Disney’s Tarzan tells a unique story of a baby raised by gorillas. It is highly creative and becomes more inspirational when viewers meet Kala. Kala is a mother gorilla who cannot bring herself to abandon the child cub who would surely die after his parents were killed. She takes Tarzan and raises him as her own son despite the entire gorilla pack being against it.

She must fight to protect Tarzan from being killed by the male gorillas and she always gives him words of wisdom and encourages him to grow into an independent adult. For being an animal adoptive mother, she does an incredible job of raising Tarzan making her easily one of the best adoptive mothers in Disney movies.

2 Worst: Gothel (Tangled)

5 Best Adoptive Mothers In Disney Movies (& 5 Worst)

Viewers and movie fans of Tangled can’t argue that Gothel is one of the cruelest, most selfish, and inconsiderate adoptive mothers in Disney. She not only kidnaps an infant, but she locks her away in a tower, forbids her from ever stepping outside, lies to her, forces her to use her hair as a painful ladder, and makes her sing a magical song so that she can get her rejuvenating powers.

After Rapunzel runs away, Gothel follows her and devises a plot to leave her heartbroken. This terrible adoptive mother can only find more ways to make her “daughter’s” life more miserable.

1 Best: Flora, Fauna, And Merriweather (Sleeping Beauty)

After evil sorceress, Maleficent put a horrible curse on young princess Aurora that would result in death, her father King Stefan, and mother Queen Leah decided to let the three good fairies adopt and raise her. Flora, Fauna, And Merriweather didn’t know anything about raising a child or even how to live normally without magic, but they band together to give Princess Aurora the best life she could have hidden away in a cottage in the middle of a forest.

These good fairies took on a huge responsibility and learned how to become supportive parents to a young child who wasn’t their own. They definitely deserve the title of best adoptive mothers in Disney Movies.
