5 Big Gaming Anniversaries In 2021 (& How Creators May Celebrate)

In addition to a slate of anticipated games, 2021 will be defined by a number of significant anniversaries for heralded classics. While the list of great games marking their 10th, 20th, 25th, and 30th milestones is lengthy, there are a few whose anniversaries are the most noteworthy as they represent key moments in the evolution of video games themselves. From arcade originals to multi-console blockbusters, some of the biggest franchises will (or at least should) be in the spotlight again.

More importantly, 2021 marks a chance for the companies that made these seminal games to celebrate them anew. Whether with next-gen remasters, multi-game collections, or other methods, there are plenty of ways for their legacies to be coronated properly. Some are old enough that a reissue could introduce them to entire new generations.

It remains to be seen exactly how the developers and/or publishers of these games plan to celebrate, if at all. As evidenced by Nintendo’s delayed acknowledgement of Mario’s 35th this year, even the biggest birthday might not get a huge party. Still, here are some ways for these anniversaries to be honored.

#5 Biggest Anniversary – Donkey Kong (40 years)

5 Big Gaming Anniversaries In 2021 (& How Creators May Celebrate)

As video arcades began to boom in the early 1980s, one of the titles that ate the most quarters with its colorful visuals (and difficulty) was a simple 1981 game about a man trying to rescue a woman from a chest-pounding, barrel-rolling ape. In the years following his villainous debut, Donkey Kong morphed into a platforming mainstay, most famously with 1994’s Donkey Kong Country.

40 years is a long time, so it should behoove Nintendo to go big for this one. Aside from the best-case scenario of a brand-new game, the ultimate dream would be a remake of Donkey Kong 64 that fixes its most glaring gameplay issues. Given the complications of that game’s license, that may not happen. But it would be a blessing for DK’s big 4-0 all the same.

#4 Biggest Anniversary – The Legend of Zelda (35 years)

One year after Super Mario marked his 35th anniversary, it’s time for Zelda and Link to celebrate their monumental legacy at 35 years. Judging by Nintendo’s actions last year, there’s a good chance players will see a trio of Zelda games reissued together on the Switch. Of course, nothing would make for a better celebration than Breath of the Wild 2 hitting shelves within the year.

#3 Biggest Anniversary – Street Fighter 2 (30 years)

Fighting games can be divided into two eras: before Street Fighter 2, and after Street Fighter 2. Originally released for arcades in 1991 before being ported to the Super Nintendo, Capcom’s globetrotting beat-’em-up set every standard for how a fighting game should feel, from indelible characters to unique moves like the Hadouken. Since the whole franchise already got a 30th anniversary release in 2018, though, Capcom might not have too much planned for its groundbreaking sequel.

#2 Biggest Anniversary – Halo (20 years)

5 Big Gaming Anniversaries In 2021 (& How Creators May Celebrate)

Of all the years any game has clocked on this list, Halo being 20 might be the hardest to believe. It’s a franchise that’s been around long enough that it being that old makes sense, and yet doesn’t feel quite like it at the same time. True to the first game’s subtitle, it evolved FPS combat in 2001, and catapulted Microsoft as a perennial force in gaming.

The most likely action 343 and Microsoft might take for Halo’s anniversary is to give the original game another remaster, just as they did for its 10th anniversary back in November 2011. Granted, that’s still recent enough to not need to remaster Halo again. Given how much the franchise catapulted Microsoft and the original Xbox two decades ago, however, it would still be apropos to honor the original once more as the Series X takes off. Of course, the long-awaited release of Halo: Infinite should be a big enough celebration.

#1 Biggest Anniversary – The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (10 years)

November 11, 2021 will mark a full decade of “Fus Ro Dah!” Skyrim has sold over 30 million copies across PC and multiple generations of consoles, according to Digital Trends. Being so recent, Bethesda might not do much more beyond inevitable Series X and PS5 ports. However, a remaster that fixes major bugs and matches the visuals to some of Skyrim’s mods would be a wise move.
