5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Disney villains are memorable and essential, given they are the primary obstacles standing in the way of beloved Disney characters like Belle and Simba. However, had circumstances been just a little different for some of these Disney villains, perhaps their story, and their outcome, would have been quite contrary.

Gaston, for instance, could have led a long life and been more caring of others had he been taught a few important life lessons. On the other hand, villains like Scar and Clayton, given their fixed states of mind and the things they had done and were capable of doing, classified them as far beyond redemption.

10 Too Far Gone: Clayton (Tarzan)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Clayton was on a very different mission compared to Jane and her father in Tarzan. He intended to capture the gorillas and sell them for a handsome amount of cash on the black market, and he wasn’t about to let anything or anyone get in his way. He was cruel, ruthless, and definitely had a fiery temper. He was also capable of murder, given he tried to kill Tarzan, and delivered the fatal shot to Kerchak. His true nature was gradually revealed in the film; his lack of remorse and empathy were clear, and he was just too far gone.

9 Could Have Been Redeemed: Stinky Pete (Toy Story 2)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Stinky Pete was never played with by a child, and he spent quite a bit of time in his box. Understandably he was bitter, sad, and angry. However, he couldn’t see past his own anger, and that was ultimately his undoing. Had Al taken him out of his box more often, or had Stinky Pete been offered the opportunity to play with a child just once, perhaps he wouldn’t have been so miserable.

He sabotaged Woody’s escape, and he tried to force Woody, Bullseye, and Jessie into heading to Japan with him, despite having the chance to go back to Andy with them. Hopefully, he learned his lesson, as he ended up with a child at the end of Toy Story 2, but had things been a little different for him, perhaps he would’ve had a happier ending with Woody and the gang.

8 Too Far Gone: Ursula (The Little Mermaid)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Ursula is cunning, bitter, evil, and certainly dangerous. She saw Ariel as an opportunity to overthrow King Triton and did what she could to sabotage Ariel so the young mermaid wouldn’t be able to hold up her end of the deal, and thus belong to Ursula for eternity. Her greediness and ambition, as well as her grudge with King Triton over her exile, are all a part of why Ursula was too far gone to be redeemed. She was on a mission, and it wasn’t going to end well no matter how she pursued it. She was too angry and hungry for power to reconsider her own part in her banishment or to consider changing; instead, she chose to carry on her evil work and trap merfolk for eternity. Her ending was suiting.

7 Could Have Been Redeemed: Yzma (The Emperor’s New Groove)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Yzma ultimately turns on Kuzco after he fires her in The Emperor’s New Groove. According to her, she was the one that raised him, and she’d served the Empire for several years. Yzma obviously felt unappreciated given her dedication to her duties over the years, especially since Kuzco fired her so callously. Her reaction is extreme given the circumstances, but also somewhat understandable given her frustration and anger at Kuzco. She can be brutal to Kronk and she may have been a little too power-hungry, but Kuzco showing her appreciation with a simple “thank you” or even a raise might have helped. Perhaps she would’ve been a kinder person. Either way, the potential for redemption was there.

6 Too Far Gone: Cruella De Vil (One Hundred And One Dalmatians)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Cruella De Vil was a fun Disney villain given her eccentricities and memorable character, but she was simply too far gone to redeem. She’s all about wealth and getting what she wants, and that meant slaughtering puppies for dog skin coats. She was okay with that, but she wasn’t up for doing the dirty work herself, hiring Jasper and Horace to do it for her.

She loves furs, and she’s prone to recklessness, given her driving on the snowy roads when she was trying to retrieve the puppies once and for all. She had motivation and drive, but she was certainly a scary woman with ill intentions.

5 Could Have Been Redeemed: Edgar (The Aristocats)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Edgar was furious upon learning that his employer, a wealthy former opera singer, intended to leave her vast fortune to her cats. As Edgar had been loyal to her for years, he expected to be the sole heir and decides to kidnap the cats so nothing stands in his way of inheriting the fortune. Instead of killing them, he leaves them in the countryside. He’s not cruel like Cruella or power-hungry like Ursula; really, all Edgar needed was some clarification from his employer, and he never would’ve taken the cats, therefore making him a perfect candidate for redemption.

4 Too Far Gone: Dr. Facilier (The Princess And The Frog)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

A talented schemer that was able to charm pretty much everyone, Dr. Facilier was dangerous. He’s also got friends “on the other side”, which is where he derives his powers from. His debt to them and his desperation for power and wealth are what make him too far gone. His desires had taken over him, and he’d resorted to drastic and dangerous means to be able to see his dreams become a reality. His debt made him that much more desperate, and even if he’d wanted to change, he would’ve had the huge obstacle of his debts in his way, which probably would have lured him back into his evil ways.

3 Could Have Been Redeemed: Prince John (Robin Hood)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Prince John clearly has issues when it comes to his family, especially his mother, in Robin Hood. He frequently sucks his thumb, wanting his mother, and feels that she favored his brother over him. He’s also very sensitive when it comes to criticism as well. He loves money, and it seems that he takes out his dysfunctional childhood on his subjects in a manner of speaking.

Had he been able to talk to someone who could help him, or had he healed his hurts when it came to his family, perhaps he never would’ve tricked his brother and taken over the throne, and thus caused the chaos and mayhem that he did.

2 Too Far Gone: Scar (The Lion King)

5 Disney Villains That Could Have Been Redeemed (& 5 That Were Too Far Gone)

Scar was brutal and downright cruel. His desire for the throne consumed him enough to motivate him to kill his own brother, and to torture his own nephew, essentially getting Simba to believe that it had been his fault his father had died. He was a cheater, he was brutal, and he certainly lacked empathy or remorse for his wrongdoing. Scar was too far gone to come back from the level of evil to which he’d ascended, and he could never redeem himself, especially given the things that he’d done. Most likely, Scar wouldn’t go back and change a thing.

1 Could Have Been Redeemed: Gaston (Beauty And The Beast)

Gaston’s biggest flaw was that he was incredibly narcissistic. He craved admiration from everyone around him and was considerably irked by the fact that Belle didn’t fawn all over him the way everyone else did. Had the townspeople not admired him so greatly, or had he learned the important lessons that not everything was about him and that he couldn’t get everything he wanted, perhaps Gaston’s story would’ve been different. In fact, Gaston may have happily let Belle be with the Beast, and he never would’ve stormed the castle and met his own tragic end.
