Ridley Scott may not have the perfect track record like Christopher Nolan does, but he is definitely a director with numerous classics behind his belt. From Alien to Blade Runner to Gladiator, Scott had been an influential director in many genres, which shows his unusual versatility.

That being said, Scott’s movies have been both blockbusters and flops. And while some of them don’t have any numbers available regarding their box office (such as his debut The Duellists), there are entries in his filmography that are distinctive commercial successes while others are unfortunate failures.

10 Lowest: 1492: Conquest Of Paradise (1992) – $7.2 million – Available On Prime Video, Paramount+, And Kanopy

1492: Conquest of Paradise is a largely unknown movie that wasn’t very positively met by critics at the time of its release. Interestingly, another movie on the same topic (Christopher Columbus: The Discovery) was released earlier the same year which may have contributed to 1492’s poor performance at the box office.

The fictionalized story follows Christopher Columbus as he discovers the Americas and dramatically changes the lives of the indigenous peoples living there.

9 Lowest: White Squall (1996) – $10.3 million – Available On Hoopla

White Squall is unique in the way it combines its disaster survival and coming-of-age subgenres while also taking place at sea. Despite Jeff Bridges starring in a prominent role, the movie was a box office disappointment much like Scott’s previous work at the time – the aforementioned 1492.

Based on The Last Voyage of the Albatross, the movie depicts a crew of high-school and college boys training on a ship while traveling as they are hit by a violent storm.

8 Lowest: Someone To Watch Over Me (1987) – $10.3 million – Available To Buy From Prime Video, iTunes, Vudu, Microsoft Store, And FandangoNow

Someone to Watch Over Me is yet another forgotten Ridley Scott movie that was also unsuccessful commercially which also received mixed reviews from critics. Interestingly, the movie’s title is derived from a song on its soundtrack which is a version of Vangelis’ “Memories of Green” (originally used in Blade Runner).

The story follows a cop from New York who falls in love with a socialite who is a murder witness that he must protect. The worst part is that he is already married.

7 Lowest: Legend (1985) – $15.5 million – Available To Buy From Prime Video, Google Play, iTunes, YouTube, And Others

Though not among Tom Cruise’s worst roles, Legend is still not the most highly-rated movie both from Cruise’s and Scott’s filmographies. It was a commercial failure but received some award nominations and eventually developed a cult following.

Cruise plays a young man named Jack who is considered a “pure being” and must prevent the Lord of Darkness from covering the world in an eternal night.

6 Lowest: Blade Runner (1982) – $41.7 million – Available To Buy From Prime Video, Google Play, iTunes, YouTube, And Others

Unarguably one of Harrison Ford’s best roles, Blade Runner is a classic from the cyberpunk genre which has been beloved for a long time now. But back when it was first released, it actually polarized critics and underperformed at the box office.

Loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s novel, it depicts a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles where synthetic humans known as replicants are created by the Tyrell Corporation and used in space colonies. Special officers known as blade runners track down replicants and permanently retire them. A group of such replicants escapes to Earth and a blade runner named Rick Deckard must retire them.

5 Highest: Robin Hood (2010) – $321.7 million – Available On DirecTV, FuboTV, And Starz

Though Robin Hood is Scott’s fifth-highest-grossing movie, it actually had a mixed reaction from critics. With a stellar cast featuring the likes of Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, Robin Hood had pretty good acting but the story was uninspiring.

Set in 12th-century England, it follows Robin Longstride with his band of marauders fighting corruption and leading an entire uprising against the crown.

4 Highest: Hannibal (2001) – $351.7 million – Available On Showtime, DirecTV, And FuboTV

Anthony Hopkins’ most well-known role to date, Hannibal Lecter was the highlight of The Silence of the Lambs, so it was inevitable that he would get another movie – and that was Hannibal. Despite receiving mixed reviews, it was a huge commercial success.

The story takes place ten years after the original movie and follows Clarice Starling (now played by Julianne Moore) trying to capture Hannibal Lecter before his surviving victim does so.

3 Highest: Prometheus (2012) – $403.4 million – Available On HBO Now, HBO Max, And DirecTV

Prometheus is somewhat in a similar position to Hannibal. It was another entry in its franchise, received mixed reviews, and was a commercial success. Michael Fassbender’s performance was particularly notable, but the poorly written story stood out like a sore thumb.

Set in the late 21st century, it is a prequel that follows the crew of spaceship Prometheus who is on a mission to find the origins of humanity by using an ancient star map from Earth.

2 Highest: Gladiator (2000) – $465.4 million – Available On Syfy, DirecTV, And FuboTV

One of Scott’s most acclaimed and impactful works, Gladiator was a success in every way imaginable. Moreover, it was the second-highest-grossing movie of 2000 and won five Academy Awards among others.

Taking place in 180 AD, it depicts the son of a Roman emperor betraying his father and killing him before slaughtering the family of his father’s most loyal general. The general is reduced to being a gladiator and sets out to work his way up and get revenge.

1 Highest: The Martian (2015) – $630.2 million – Available To Buy From Prime Video, Google Play, iTunes, YouTube, And Others

Starring Matt Damon in the lead role, The Martian is one of the most successful sci-fi movies of the past decade with its funny yet dramatic story, amazing performances, and even scientific accuracy which is not as common in movies as it may seem.

Based on the novel of the same name, it tells the story of an astronaut who is left behind by his crew on Mars after they presume that he is dead. Now, he must survive there on his own long enough to be rescued.
