The Diamond and Pearl remakes were inevitably revealed in the form of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl for the Nintendo Switch, but the biggest reveal was what came immediately after. It was leaked beforehand, but most surely didn’t suspect that the remakes would be handed over to a new developer while Game Freak announced work on an open-world title in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

A game of this concept has been fans’ dream since the franchise’s inception in 1996, and there wasn’t much suggestion prior that GF had any intention of venturing out of their comfort zone. On paper, these plans seem like positive steps down the right path for the future, but it’s not all rainbows and sunshine, there are plenty of things that fans are worried about as well.

10 Excited: Pokémon: Breath Of The Wild

Beginning with the concept, fans have been dying to see the mainline games–or any RPG in the franchise–go the way of Link in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Pokémon is a world ripe for this, with the hundreds of creatures to encounter, forests, fields, deserts, mountains, tundra, and caves to explore.

As mentioned, nothing before this–especially with Sword and Shield–really suggested Game Freak had any real ambition for where the games would go in the future, so seeing this blueprint is more than a welcome surprise. Change is something many fans will be glad to see the mainline games embrace, and it’s great that GF sees that going forward.

9 Worried: Performance Issues

While seeing that something like Legends exists is thrilling, the actual demonstration of the game in action through the reveal trailer was worrying upon taking the rose-tinted glasses of seen an open-world Pokémon game become real. As a proof of concept and/or tech demo, the trailer is definitely encouraging, but this is a trailer for a game that’s just a year away and had Pokémon AI move and behave as if they were slideshows.

Rough environmental textures were seen, and while “game footage not final” was noted at the bottom of the screen, Sword and Shield trailers said the same, with the games looking/running at launch pretty much how they were initially revealed. If GF had trouble running the last entries and the ones on the 3DS, then an open-world Switch game is another cause for concern.

8 Excited: Outsourced D/P Remakes

The lead-up to the Pokémon Legends: Arceus suggested this would come, as the Presents stream followed the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl trailer with a graphic illustrating those involved in the game. Surprisingly, it looks like the games were outsourced to ILCA, a new developer, only having previously worked on the Pokémon HOME app.

GF has Junichi Masuda co-directing along with the ILCA’s own Yuichi Ueda, but otherwise, they’re focused on Legends, which is the encouraging news in all this. It also didn’t seem likely before that anyone other than GF would be handling main games, so bringing in new teams could ensure great final products in BD/SP and Legends.

7 Worried: Early 2022 May Not Be Enough

Expanding on the last point, it was good to hear that Pokémon Legends: Arceus isn’t getting cranked out in November, which is when Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (presumably) launch. It means that this will have more time to bake in the oven–which is good–but “early 2022” may still not be enough time. “Early 2022” sounds like Q1 2022, which is a time frame of January 1 to March 31.

Assuming BD/SP release in November and GF squeezes the most out of time possible and waits until the end of March, that’s four months of extra development. Surely a good amount can get done with that if applied efficiently, but given GF’s recent track record, there’s little reason to immediately assume this is plenty.

6 Excited: Legends As A New Precedent

The term “mainline games” has been thrown around quite a bit and there’s confusion over what constitutes as “main” and “spinoff.” Instead of one mainline series, they seemed to have splintered off into three. Traditional games are the ones fans have been used to from GF since 1996, including remakes. Let’s Go and now Legends are both also referred to as mainline, and perhaps set a new precedent for future entries.

Legends is a great format for this, as prequels to generations could be theoretically done for any of them. It gives players chances to explore these regions in open-world settings and extends the franchise’s longevity. With ample time and care, it wouldn’t matter much if all ~900 Pokémon aren’t in-game if things like “Legends: Celebii” release and improve the formula.

5 Worried: Barren, Lifeless World

Somewhat tying into the performance seen in the trailer, Legends could suffer one of the traps that certain open-world games fall into. One issue is bloat, like in some Ubisoft’s games, but Legends could go the opposite way and suffer from barren, lifeless wastelands. Going open-world isn’t worth it if it’s just for the sake of being bigger.

So far, it looks like there are a lot of vacant fields, and some are worrying that they’re using the plot’s excuse to possibly only have a single town in the game. Meanwhile, Pokémon AI looked concerning, with the wild Shinx completely unreactive to the one next to it being captured. The world needs meaningful content and creatures that feel alive, reacting to the world and the inhabitants in it.

4 Excited: Hopefully Getting Monolith’s Help

It’s just speculation at this point, but a possible answer to the previous potential issue is getting Monolith Soft’s help. The developers are known for the Xenoblade Chronicles games, though, they’re also famous for having a hand in the acclaimed Breath of the Wild.

Specifically, they helped Nintendo with elements of the game’s open world, which is something GF should take advantage of. Under Nintendo’s umbrella, one would think all they’d have to do is ask to get Monolith’s help on Legends. Especially with having a year left, they could be a key in filling the world with vibrant life and meaningful, engaging content.

3 Worried: Too Strict To Delay

It’s no secret that The Pokémon Company runs a tight ship of release schedules. Mainline games have been mostly annual despite sticking to one developer for so long. It’s been to the games’ downfall in content–though admittedly not profit, which is why they seemed content with the way things were all this time.

If development on Legends goes similarly to Sword and Shield in that what you initially see is pretty much all you’ll get, it’s hard to imagine that TPC will push the game’s release back, even if the game needs it. Frankly, it’d be encouraging if it gets pushed back to winter 2022.

2 Excited: New Assortment Of Pokémon

Something else exciting to see is what the selection of Pokémon will be available in old Sinnoh. Maybe they’ll throw in “new” species since it takes place far into the past, but regardless it’ll be interesting to see what combination of current species will inhabit this Feudal-like region, and the starters have already given a look into that.

It would’ve been dull to have the same trio of starters again, so seeing that Cyndaquil, Oshawott, and Rowlet will be the starters is refreshing. Fans have envisioned mainline games with more creative starter assortments, and it’s great to see GF put this into their most ambitious game yet.

1 Worried: Cyberpunk-Like Issues

Rumors have circulated of a revised Switch model for some time now, with them getting louder still. This could actually be a strength for Legends as a “Switch Pro,” “Super Switch,” etc. could help bolster the game’s performance. Though, it also could be a double-edged sword.

Cyberpunk 2077 infamously crashed and burned technically with swarms of bugs, but particularly on base-model PS4 and Xbox One. If GF can’t make Legends work technically, it could be broken on base-model Switches, forcing upgraded purchases along with the game, or worse, launch broken/borderline-broken on the hypothetical “Pro” version, too.
